Mapping the startup ecosystem

Two initiatives played a central role in the discussion: Øresund Startup News, where we cover the latest news of founders, startups, and innovation across the region, and the Öresund Startup Map, a platform designed to make the startup ecosystem easier to explore.

On their website, Öresund Startup Map comes with an actual map of startups in the region; not only that, they have updated events people can sign up for, and job opportunities across Skåne and Greater Copenhagen. By the time of its launch, the map already has 900+ organizations free to explore.

Whether you are a founder looking for connections, investors discovering companies, or organizations looking for collaborators, both of these initiatives help make the startup ecosystem more visible and accessible for everyone, 

One region, more opportunities to discover

This lunch talk at HETCH highlighted a simple but important challenge for the Øresund startup ecosystem, which is to connect people with opportunities that already exist nearby and to build awareness of what is happening in the region. 

For Øresund startups, the takeaway is clear. Building a stronger cross-border ecosystem is not only about creating more events, but it is also about helping people discover what is already happening across the cities and the other side of the bridge.

The weekend is all about building things and learning AI tools or other devices. With access to a makerspace you can also construct, print or modify things. Participants are free to explore any idea, but projects are encouraged to focus on sustainability, equality, impact, and peace and conflict. Participants can bring an idea they are already working on, or team up with others to develop new ideas at the event.

The event’s most distinctive feature is saved for the end: it starts on land, at Mindparks Helsingborg facility, but the presentation of what people have built during the weekend takes place on the ferries between Sweden and Denmark. Participants pitch their ideas onboard, going between two countries, making the finale of the event a literal journey across the Øresund.

Alongside the building, the weekend also offers a series of workshops on subjects such as using AI tools to create apps or websites, as well as business mindsets and communication.

The event welcomes a mix of backgrounds, skill sets, and levels of experience. Aimed mainly at students at Lunds University, it is also open to an extend to aspiring entrepreneurs to seasoned founders and curious professionals. No prior experience is required.

The program runs Saturday, October 24 from 11:00 to 17:30 and Sunday, October 25 from 10:00 to 18:30.

This year’s theme was “Fuld fart frem” (Full Steam Ahead), capturing an industry that has emerged from a couple of turbulent years of consolidation, professionalization, and cost-cutting, and is now shifting its aim toward growth and export markets with renewed confidence.

The conference is truly the meeting place for e-commerce professionals in Denmark and organized by Dansk Erhverv. The big halls are filled both with multiple stages, where both practical insights, inspiration and new technology was profiled, as well many both exhibitors from all over the world showcasing the latest solutions to make e-commerce easier.

From the main stage programme, two keynote sessions stood out:

Digital Sovereignty: Do We Really Have a Choice, and How Big Is the Risk?

The debate on Europe’s digital sovereignty, between former European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager, Dansk Erhverv Deputy Director Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, and tech profile DHH (David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails and 37signals co-founder), was the day’s big political conversation. Danish companies are deeply dependent on American technology, and cloud, AI, software, and digital platforms have become part of the critical infrastructure of both businesses and society. The panel dug into the core questions: should Europe build its own alternatives, make itself less dependent on American Big Tech, or find a better balance in the dependency relationship? And what can companies concretely do to understand their dependencies, make choices on an informed basis, and secure greater freedom of action? With Vestager’s regulatory experience and Heinemeier Hansson’s long-standing stance against Big Tech dependence, the session provided one of the sharpest discussions of the day.

DILLING: The Courage for Digital Transformation in a 100-Year-Old Manufacturing Company

The second highlight came from a very different corner. Morten Dilling, CEO of DILLING and fourth generation of the family-owned company that has produced clothing in natural materials since 1916, shared the story of how a century-old manufacturer transformed step by step into an international e-commerce business. The journey has made DILLING a three-time winner at the E-handelsprisen awards, including the Gold Prize for the best-performing company across all categories, all while keeping production in Denmark. Dilling’s principles stayed with the audience long after the session ended: nothing beats the product, the next customer is the most important one, and sometimes you need both ice in your stomach and fire in your eyes to dare make decisions and hold the course. His point that virtues and data go hand in hand offered a grounded counterweight to the day’s louder hype.

Between the six stages, the halls buzzed with the network and professional sparring the conference is known for. If the mood in Lokomotivværkstedet is anything to go by, the Danish e-commerce industry is indeed running at full speed.

Rather than a traditional conference, the focus is on meeting, testing, exploring, and working together. The purpose of the day is to lower the barriers to innovation and emerging technology and to create a local meeting place where organizations with real-world needs, creatives, and academia can explore how immersive technology can help solve real problems and create tangible value, from more effective learning and safer working environments to new ways of visualizing complex information.

The event moves from inspiration to concrete action. It begins with a lunch and a future outlook, including concrete examples of how immersive intelligence is used in industry, healthcare, and education. After that participants step into the mobile innovation lab to experience modern XR technology firsthand in a guided environment. Later cross-sector groups work with real-world needs and challenges to identify where immersive intelligence can create measurable value, followed by reflection, and more time to test the technology. The day ends with a wrap-up and a Workshop-to-go concept that participants can use to continue exploring the possibilities with colleagues and management back in their own organizations.

The event welcomes people from startup, business, academia, the public sector, and the creative industries who want to understand, explore, or drive development through emerging technology. No XR expertise is required, as the day is designed to lower the barrier to the technology.

In the effort of strengthening the partnership around the innovation ecosystem in building the future, this year’s Helsingborg Tech Week comes under the theme “Make It Work. Then Scale It.” The week will not only focus on talking about future technologies, but also on testing ideas, finding partners, and turning promising solutions into something that works in the real world.

Unlike traditional conferences where it’s held in one venue, Helsingborg Tech Week spreads across the city’s innovation ecosystem: RecoLab, HETCH, Mindpark, E-commerce Park of Scandinavia, Parken: Center for Innovation and Lunds University Helsingborg Campus. The programme covers lectures, workshops, networking events, testbeds, startup activities, and conversations connecting academia, business, the public sector, and entrepreneurs.

Helsingborg Tech Week, offers a wide variety of events from REAL Impact: Supply Chain Innovation Forum, a lecture by Nobel prize winner laureate, Anne L’Huillier about The world of atoms at the attosecond time scale, the Make It! Hackathon by LU Innovation at Mindpark, the Venture Cup regional finals, the Challenges and Investment Needs in Water and Wastewater Management, a Girls in Tech with Koenigsegg at the Science Center and even a bootcamp about skill supply. A lot of different events, all on different aspects of tech, startups or innovation.

According to the event page, the day is built around honest conversations about what technology actually delivers, with every session grounded in what practitioners are currently building and shipping, rather than abstract keynotes. It is organized by E-commerce Park in collaboration with Lund University and Helsingborgs Handelsförening.

Topics on the agenda include AI across the supply chain, automated warehouses, order fulfilment and customer experience, return management, demand planning, sustainable omnichannel delivery, and trends in the 3PL market.

The speaker lineup features practitioners and researchers from across the Nordic logistics scene. Highlights include Patrik Johnfors and Jesper Brandin of Nowaste Logistics on automated warehouses, Paul Kleiby of Network Logistics and Henrik Sällman of Reeinvent on AI as the layer connecting the supply chain, and a case presentation on how Stadium and Lund University turned return-management research into real-world practice, featuring Jonas Hessler, CEO of Sweef and former IKEA executive, Markus Nordlund of Inretrn, and researcher Klas Hjort.

Lund University researchers Henrik Pålsson and Yulia Vakulenko will also take the stage, with Vakulenko presenting findings from 100 million Amazon reviews on the moments customers care about most. Axel Lindgren of Bring closes the day with a look at 3PL market trends and shifting consumer behaviour.

The afternoon includes two rounds of facilitated breakout sessions where attendees can dig into specific topics in smaller groups. The forum wraps up with an open afterwork at Mindpark from 16:30 to 18:30, welcoming all Helsingborg Tech Week attendees.

This summit was organized by Øresundsinstituttet and Greater Copenhagen that brought together professionals and representatives from research institutions, science parks, incubators, industry organisations and public sectors to talk and discuss about the opportunities and challenges in building stronger cross-border innovation regions.

One of the session was the discussion about “The Øresund region as a hotspot for Danish-Swedish innovation and research” which brought five panelists: Anders G Nilsson, CEO of Ideon Science Park; Anette Steenberg, CEO of Medicon Valley Alliance; Markus Herrgård, CTO of BioInnovation Institute; Petter Hartman, CEO of Medicon Village Innovation; and Thomas Unt, Head of Incubation at Medeon Science Park.

The strengths of having research institutions, science parks, incubators, and companies located within close geographical proximity but different countries was a topic in the discussion. One remark that stood out during was when a panelist was being asked about his plans for the day where he said “I’m having breakfast in Lund, Lunch in Copenhagen and dinner in Helsingborg.” This statement highlights the geographical closeness and the mobility convenience of the Øresund region.

Turning proximity into innovation

The Øresund region already houses an impressive 13 universities, multiple major research infrastructure, science parks, incubators, and a growing startup ecosystem. Facilitating an environment where research and entrepreneurship can meet. 

Startups in the Øresund region have an advantage of access not only cross border but also a wider pool of talent, research expertise, investors, infrastructure, and potential partners. In the long run it can create opportunities to collaborate beyond their national ecosystem. That is why although the Øresund Bridge physically connects Denmark and Sweden, beyond that the region’s innovation ecosystem actually depends more on people crossing borders, institutions collaborating, and ideas moving freely between communities.

During these two-day TechBBQ created multiple stages each with its own themed corners running simultaneously. As an attendee to this event, the main challenge was not to find something interesting to do but to actually decide which one to go to due to the large varieties of topics and activities provided across the venue. 

Something for Everyone

The programme was spread across multiple spaces throughout the venue: the Main Stage, three dedicated Grill Session corners — Orange, Green, and Blue —, the Diversity Lounge, Firecamp Corner, six event rooms, the Life Science & Deep Tech Stage, and the Longevity Corner. When navigating an event as big as the TechBBQ, downloading the Brella app is essential to know what events are happening across the venue. 

The main stage, grill session and firecamp corner, offers insights and stories from founders ranging from what they are currently building to the challenges they faced during the process and providing tips on how they overcame those challenges.

The diversity lounge held by Women in Tech offers a place for attendees to interact, exchange perspectives and converse about DEJI (Diversity, Equity, Justice, Inclusion), Leadership & Culture, AI & Machine Learning and Social Investment & Skills.

TechBBQ also opened the door to perspectives from different parts of the world. Separate sessions explored Denmark and Sweden, India in the Nordics, and Africa, bringing discussions about entrepreneurship, innovation, and the development of startup ecosystems into a broader international context.

Among the founders, investors, and experienced professionals, we also noticed many students running their first startups attending TechBBQ.

Their presence was a reminder that startup ecosystems are not built only by people who are already running successful companies. Students and early-career professionals are also part of the ecosystem – as future founders, employees, researchers, communicators, and community builders. For them, events like TechBBQ provide a chance to step outside the classroom, hear directly from entrepreneurs, explore industries they may not have encountered before, and start building connections early.
