That the nordic countries are known for being colder is common knowledge. And a lot of foreigners also know that the people living her have a more isolated approach to social contacts as well. This makes the Nordics always somewhat hard to settle in – and to feel really at home in.

But as foreigners are of huge importance for building successful startups, there has been formed a new initiative by Jessie Scheepers, head of people at Pleo, together with Morten Elk at SimpleSite, Camilla Ley Valentin at Queue-it and Christina Pansbo at Wunderman. They have taken the initiave to start a slack channel to make it easier for foreigners to feel more included in Copenhagen.

“….nothing says inclusivity these days as much as a Slack community, right? Welcome to #copenhagen. Join us in a place to mingle, connect with like-minded people, and try to start more sharing, more reach outs, and more connections with everyone else out there.” says Jessie in an annoucement.

The goal is to create a digital space where people can ask questions, find information and support, when moving to Copenhagen or thinking about moving here.

“We in Denmark actually rank in the bottom 5 of the hardest places for foreigners to settle – along with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. That, in itself, is a bit unsettling. We think we can do better.”

Danish SimpleSite, a service that enables users to build their own websites with ease and simplicity, has won Red Herring Global award. The company’s CEO, Morten Elk, represented the company at the ceremony in Los Angeles, USA.

The 100 finalists at the Red Herring Global were selected from more than a thousand technology companies worldwide. And SimpleSite was the only Danish company represented at the ceremony.

For SimpleSite, running several million active free websites and about 100,000 paying customers, the Red Herring Global award was important in terms of finding investors who can support the company’s future growth.

“We know that investors are very aware of Red Herring, so the award is important for us if we want to attract funding to maintain and strengthen our position in the global “DIY-websites” market where we compete against three to four major players,” shared Morten Elk.

Among Red Herring Top Global 100 is also Malmo-based Trialbee, that works with software solutions that optimize clinical trial process. See the full list of Top Global Winners 2015 here.

Red Herring Award highlights the most promising tech companies in three regional awards for Europe, North America and Asia, which then lead to the global event in Los Angeles. Many winning companies later become prominent companies, or being acquired by industry. Facebook, Google, eBay and Skype are among former Red Herring Global winners.

For the second time, Nordic Growth Hackers opened the doors to Founders House in Copenhagen and invited all interested individuals to an open event about online business and marketing.

“Growth hacking is a very large and very interesting tool box, that you can apply to your online business” says Morten Elk, Founder of SimpleSite, presenter of the event

For this event, six speakers were invited to tell the audience about their companies marketing; tools that worked well and the obstacles they had to overcome. The speakers of the evening were:

Matias Møl Dalsgaard, GoMore

Kaare Danielsen, Jobindex

Peter Schlegel, Admazely

Tomas Gorrissen, Responsive

Ture Dahl, Endomondo

Martin Bjergegaard, Pine Tribe

About the event

The speakers had about 15 minutes each to tell the audience about their experiences. They all spoke about various considerations and choices they’ve made in hope to make the company grow. Some choose to talk broadly about their experiences, while others went into detail. Common feature of most of them was to point out the importance to find a niche in order to make the company grow.

“You need to find a niche and do it differently from everybody else. It doesn’t really have to be better, but just differently” says Ture Dahl, Endomondo

For those looking for inspiration for their own business or are generally interested in different approaches in marketing an online business, the events organized by Nordic Growth Hackers is strongly recommended. Also, on their homepage you can find a collection of resources that are regarded as interesting and instructive for online businesses.

Did you miss the event? The event was filmed, so in the near future you will luckily be able to find it online on the YouTube channel, where also the previous videos can be found. And take the opportunity to book the next event even now; on April the 23rd the doors will open to a new and exciting event organized by Nordic Growth Hackers!

An evening focusing on both general terms and useful tips. The event consisted of 6 speakers, presenting how they work with growth hacking and success-stories as well as failures.

“An evening with focus on mechanics, and not on pitches or value proposition, that or often heard at startup events”

– welcomed Morten Elk, CEO at SimpleSite and initiator of the event. It was a packed evening, at Founders House in the Startup Village. The guest list of 100 people being signed up already weeks in advance. Also very interesting, and good, was that a lot of the audience was not just entrepreneurs, but also key employees at startups, especially the larger ones.

6 presentations on growth hacking

All six presentations were by very interesting key players – who work with growth hacking on some of the larger startups in the region. A great line-up.

Christos Iosifidis from Vine app Vivino

Peter Engelbrecht, from phone company Firmafon

Ronja Gustavsson, from social media management Falcon Social

Martin Thorborg, from accounting service Dinero

Jonas Nielsen from website builder SimpleSite

Jon Schäffer from digital conference service Conferize

Some take aways and lessons learned

Christos from Vivino talked about how they use growth hacking, and how his background from the games industry influences it.

“It’s about understanding core product value and user behaviour”

He talked about his view on the core concepts, but also that tests aren’t the most important thing in Growth Hacking

“It’s not just running a test. I became sceptical to test. You cannot really test everything.”

“However, it can be used as a tool of knowing versus understanding”.

He outlined 3 key things that you need to understand to do good growth hacking:

Where are your users coming from, how and why

Are they served core product value within the first 60 seconds? Especially true for mobile he mentioned.

How do they engage and how often

Excel, Google Spreadsheet and RStudio

Peter from Firmafon, a B2B phone company that is not awful, as he introduced it himself, was ned up and went into details .

“Do not waste your time on growth hacking when you only 100 visitors a month”

He went thru tips for tools. He mentioned that Moz and Optimazily are great tools, but everyone uses them as well, so it is hard to differentiate with others. Doing manual and custom analysis was important. For that he went thru the differences between Excel and Google Spreadsheet, with a strong preference to Googles solution. he gave a couple of great tips:

Google spreadsheet vs excel:

Cloud – everyone works in one master document

Powerful scripting – Google Apps Script is javascript, and runs in the cloud.

Connected sheets – everything is in the cloud, instead of needing to be on one computer. He mentioned functions like URLFetchApp and to_google_spreadsheet, that help a lot.

Powerful analysis – Amongst other FILTER and QUERY are powerful lookup tools.

“But google docs will only get you so far. ones you put half a million values in it, it gets kind of stuck. Then we discovered ‘R’”

He went on to go thru Rs benefits to spreadsheets: R is a programming language. It is better then any spreadsheet, very powerful analysis. It’s unifies logic, which is a lot better then having your ‘logic’ is spread out over multiple formulas in different cells, spreadsheet, or scripts, that get impossible to trouble shoot when it gets too complicated.

It is a universe in itself, so he mentioned amongst other that, RStudio IDE together with RMySQL, dplyr and ggplot2 are good resources to start with.

Peter also gave tips for what to analyse. He mentioned that cohort analysis is a great thing to do, it gave them an enourmous insight. Amongst other that there is not just one life-time value. Segment costumers, they might have different life time values.

Growth hacking management

Ronja from Falcon Social talked about her team, and growth hacking from a management approach. Falcon Social has had a remarkable 640 % MRR for the first full year of sales. Already growing faster this year.

She highlighted 6 things to think about a team that has a growth hacking mindset.

Context – put up absurd goals, and prepare people for that it will get hairy and complicated sometimes.

Goals – here she talked about MQL, marketing qualified leads, which was their main KPI.

Data – an important insight was that not the entire marketing team was data-savvy. Therefore visualising data on screen in the department helped everyone keeping track of it.

People – Her lesson was to be extremely sceptical. Take your time to hire the right people with the right mindset. Every team member counts.

Listen – She mentioned how they use listening to be flexible and take advantages of external changes. Such as creating landing pages or blogs for specific events very quickly. Or about contacting companies depending on what your competition does, or what happens in your business area.

Process – create processes, but if they don’t work, kill them.

She also talked a bit about content marketing:

“Don’t worry too much about what to write in the beginning, probably no-one will read it anyway. just write articles and get them out, learn from there.”

Crazy stories from the past

Martin Thorborg was next up, talking with humour about stories from his entrepreneurial past. He mentioned both the game Fight Club and the software Spamfighter, with stories about smaller changes they made, that affected signup rates enormously. The main take-away was:

“There is always, always, always something that you can take you sign-ups to 5 times or 10 times your current. You need to think about it hard, and maybe drink a lot of beer or smoke stuff – but there is a way”

Growth hacking at SimpleSite

Jonas from SimpleSite presented how they work. SimpleSite has really been growing recently, having reached 400 000 signup a month, and having reached 80 000 paying subscribers.

Jonas talked about how they now with the volume are really data driven – and have tested both smaller changes, as well as large strategic things. One of them that he highlighted was going from premium (with a 30 day trial), to freemium – begin free ‘forever’ but charging for services that advanced users will want to use. This they tested first on selected markets, and found out that they would loose 10% of the paying costumers. – something they felt confident that they could regain with the added signups freemium would bring in.

He also mentioned that some things they found out by blind luck – such as adding a questionnaire at the beginning. This was expected to be bad, but instead showed a 12% increase!

“If you have the volume to do test, do them. You do not know what will work.”

He also showed stats of the past 100 tests they have made, and the changed they tracked. Clearly, most tests had resulted in worse conversations:

“1 in 16 tests works out for us”

Growth Hacking to build a community

Jon from Conferize was the last to present. He mentioned how they grow users thru both conference organisers, speakers, as well as community. One driving factor right now was thru email, often from conference organisers, where he shared some data, open rates amongst attendees and speakers being roughly 70%, of them 30% clicked thru and of those around 50% signed up.

‘Save the leads’ hack are they trying right now. Giving users the chance to have a discount at conferences if they invite 3 friends.

Key take-aways from it all

Important take-aways: don’t test unless you have enough data. Use common sense or costumer interviews in the beginning, When you have users in the thousands then maybe you can start to test.

Some rule of thumbs mentioned: With 1000 interactions you can measure changes of around 10 percentage-points with statistical certainty. With 10 000 interactions you can measure 3 percentage points.

Also, there was a discussion when it comes to B2B, if free trial or demo was the way to go.

“Free trial did not work for us. With a free demo, we gave them a call, and that moved the sales process.”

Was Ronjas take on it, while Peter instead said that for them free trial is the way to go:

“For us ease of use is important. If free trield would not work, then we have a problem with our product”

Growth hacking has not one certain formula, and if that was not clear to the attendees already it certainly became during the event. However, a lot of people got useful information they can put to use themselves, and the entire event seemed very appreciated.

The entire event was filmed, and the films will be realeased later. We will out them up in our video section when they are out.

The ambition is to have the Nordic Growth Hacker event quarterly, so we look forward to the next one in the beginning of 2015. This was a great event, and something that shows the strength of #cphftw – leveraging the community to reach out to relevant participants.

The third #cphftw Town Hall meet-up was held earlier this week. There were big news about the initiative itself as well as a lot of announcement of very interesting new initiatives. The venue was the Kph Volume hall – a very rough environment, that reinforced the ambition of the whole initiative – do it simple and focus on moving things forward. As previously, the by now iconic sitzkartongs filled the room.

A goal and more structure

The first half of the event was focused on giving the participants a chance to speak out and an update on the structure of the initiative.
It was presented that Jasenko Hadzic and Lærke Ullerup will form the operational team, with Jasenko being the official Managing Director. Jasenko is, as previsouly stated, known in the community, and Lærke has a past at TEDxCPH and has been involved in the #cphftw initiative since its initial phase.

Also, it’s goals of #cphftw were presented. These are:

To make Denmark the most attractive startup hub in Europe

To increase relations amongst community leaders and entrepreneurs in the ecosystem

To to increase international exposure, benefiting the Denmark and the Danish economy

How to do it

But it is not just about what the goals are, even more important are how to do it. Here some concrete actions were announced:

Connecting the ecosystem

A couple of initiatives were presented about how to move things forward. Amongst other through dedicated meet ups for C-level employees at startups. People who often have a huge experience and can share information with others. But also with founders dinners and a mailing list for entrepreneurs.

Making the ecosystem visible

This mainly through an online platform, over at cphftw.dk, which should make it easy to get an overview of what happens, and also highlight interesting stories. Also, making the eco-system visible to media to a larger extend.

Connecting Copenhagen to the world

8 exclusive investors dinners with all major Nothern European VCs. Also, actively working with other hubs such as Stockholm, Helsinki and Berlin to drive learning across borders.

Also, all founding startups were announced as well, having pledged over 500 000 DKK to the initiative so far – it should be noted that at the event it was mentioned that the number was 400.000 DKK, but the sign-ups have been flying in ever since the evening.

It was also mentioned that the all startups have the chance of becoming founding members of #cphftw, were the goal is to get 80+ on board until end the week. If you want your startup to join in and forever be known as one of the founding members, reach out to Jasenko directly.

What is happening in Copenhagen

Besides those great news about the initiative itself, the second part was all about startups and events happening in Copenhagen.

It was set up as quick series of mini-presentations. A chance for all assembled to know about some impress startups or happenings. here were a lot of quick presentations and announcement. 6 startups were presented, as well as over 10 different initiatives from the community.

For outsiders, one of the most interesting parts were all the different initiatives that are going on.

Community initiatives and events

Here multiple places, initiatives and events were presented. All very interesting in their own, but too much to cover in depth. Amongst them were:

Jacob Bøtter told the story about Prototype, and it’s strange mixture of co-working and coffeeshop

Michael Tiberg talked about Foo Café, how he managed to host over 300 tech events last year in Malmö, and about opening a Foo Café in Copenhagen.

CIID, the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design – Alie Rose, talked about bringing together people from all over the world to work on interaction and development projects. A great pool for talent.

Lars Buch from StartupBootcamp came and brought a lot of energy – enforcing that we need to celebrate the people who are doing this.

Lean Startup Circle was presented, and that they will host multiple events in the fall, using their 950+ strong meet-up group to bring great minds together, and above all focus on actual learnings and testing.

Michael Reibel Boesen presented Elevate, which is kind of a job fair for getting students exposed to startups. A great initiative.

Camilla Ley Valentin from Queue-it talked about her involvement with the danish goverment in the enklereregler.dk initiative – making regulations easier. She highlighted that everyone should send in their growth barriers before the October 3rd, and she would present them to the government.

Henrik Føhns from Harddisken, the program from Danish Public Radio 1, was on stage and talked about his job of distributing the future more evenly – using one hour of public radio a week for interviews and the tech scene.

Morten Elk from SimpleSite presented his initiative: Nordic Growth Hackers meet-ups. The events will focus in real learnings – 6 cases with growth hacking will be presented. The first meet-up is in october at Founders House.

Startup presentations

6 startups got 3 minutes each. The startups were from different levels – from really successful ones to smaller ones that recently have had successes.

Sitecore

“Before Sitecore I started multiple non-profits. Although I never intended them to be non-profit…”

Was one of the quotes from Lars Fløe Nielsen who presented his company. A company that might be the ‘biggest unknown startup’ in Copenhagen. Having had organic growth to over 800 employees and hundreds of millions in revenue, it surely is a very impressive company he has build.

Shipbeat

“A startup is about a team”

Was one of the widsoms Kenneth Svenningsen from Shipbeat shared. The logistics as a service startup has recently closed an impressive seed-round.

“I didn’t want to do this. But my past experience from Rocket Internet in Sydney and Miinto I realisted there was no good solution for this”

Kenneth said about his startup idea.

Crowdcurity

Jacob Hansen from Crowdcurity talked about how they are solving security problems for companies.

“We are Backed by 1000 of security researchers world wide. “

Apart from their journey so far with boost.vc and 500 startups, he also mentioned current progress:

“The bitcoin marked is currently one of our focus areas, we get a lot of interest from companies active there.”

Komfo

Michael talked about Komfo and how they are now competing against Adobe social, Meltwater and a lot of the same competitors as Lars from Sitecore mentioned previously. Komfo and Sitecore also have a long relationship already.

“We wanted an organic growth, and took Sitecore as a strategic investor instead of venture capital.”

Realm (former tightDB)

Brian Munkholm presented his startup. They are currently 16 employees, half of them in Silicon Valley.
Their service: a very fast database tool. He mentioned that they are proud that it was released one month ago, already 1700 stars on GitHub.

Conferize

Jesper Vestergaard introduced the startup, and their ambition to make conferences more digital and forming a community around them. They have just released their new product.

“We 12 people working at conferize right now. Looking for more”

Jesper he hinted. He also made a pledge: If you have a free event in Copenhagen you can use the Conferize without any costs.

Podio

The last one is not a startup anymore, since their exit to Citrix in 2012. However, Kasper Hulthin talked about their journey 2009-2012. But also talked about how they have worked to get Citrix to make the Podio office a hub for their development, and getting the company to make it’s presence in the region stronger. An effort that was applauded to!

The presentations were all quick, and gave a sense of some of the interesting startups in Copenhagen. They also showed a clear trend – it’s the b2b sector startups that this region rocks at building.

Conclusions

Apart from all this there were even more short presentations and speeches. It was, in total, a really packed event with a lot of information shared. After all the presentations the bar, staffed by employees from the startup 23, was open and a lot of new connections made. A lot of suggestions and ideas also spread thru twitter on the #cphftw hashtag, were already new plans for sharing more knowledge were taking shape.

Danish SimpleSite, or 123hjemmeside how it is better known in the region, made public company’s performance results for the past year.

“I’m rather proud that we have been able to generate 35% growth to 45 mio DKK (6 million Euro) in revenue on top of a an already fairly substantial 2012 revenue. I think it shows that it we have good contenders here in Scandinavia to the US players in a quickly rising “website builder” segment in the SaaS market,” shared company’s CEO Morten Elk in official press-release.

In terms of earnings for 2013 SimpleSite had a loss of 1.4 million DKK (187K Euro) after tax. However, gains from the new customers will contribute approximately 20 million DKK extra to the bottom line in the coming years. 70% of the Denmark-based company’s turnover in 2013 was international and 88% of all new customers come from abroad, promising for international share of turnover to grow more in the future.

Company’s massive growth of customer base is the result of targeted investment in online marketing in 124 countries. There are 24 country dedicated sites, three of which for Brazil, Russia and Malasia were added in 2013.

Currently SimpleSite is among top 10 websites for small businesses globally, but the goal is to be among top 5. A way to improve company’s market position is through product development, taking the benefit of SimpleSite’s high growth. Several hundred thousand trial subscribers every month give SimpleSite the opportunity to conduct A/B testing in product development. For instance, adding a background picture to the new users’ websites resulted in a 12% more subscribers choosing to become customers.

Today I held a short lunch seminar on the subject of the most prominent startups in the region. The seminar was held because I was asked to do it, and when I thought about it I realized would be interesting to do. So I did, even if it was with a limited amount of preparations (which I can be accused of, but my main philosophy is: better to do then to don’t). So I did it.

It was held over lunch at CreativeLab, the creative event concept at the SHIP co-working space. Because we have a policy of livecasting whatever we do, you can watch the recording above (Our new Bambuser channel can be found here).

If you want to download the slides, I have made them available on slideshare but there are quite low resolution there, so can be found as pdf here as well.

I am probably describing some of the startups a little bit wrong (sorry for that), and I missed some things in the presentation (corrected in the downloadable versions). But I hope it creates some value for you as the viewer anyway.

Update 1: Some have asked why so many people are walking around and the background noice – the location where the presentation was held is the auditorium in the CreativeLab, called “trappan”, and is just that: the main stairs between the first and second floor. It is designed to be in the middle of the entire place, so that any presentations held there can have drop-in / drop-out flow. A somewhat special enviroment, but I love it, often with a lot of student from Lunds University sitting around in the open areas, and the business and entrepreneurs on the stairs themselves…

Update 2: I should of course list the top 50 startups mentioned as well! Here they are (in the order presented, i.e. in alphabetical order after category):

The startup 123hjemmeside, which operates in 24 countries so far under brands such as simplesite.com (US) or 123webseite.de (DE), has shared with them their yearly earnings numbers for 2012, and together with that their ambitious plans to grow even more international.

The company has said that they have started to perfect their user acquisition costs online, being able to accurately forecast new users depending on marketing efforts.

“We stepped up the speed during 2012 and now in 2013 we start to see that the business is growing as expected. Already in 2014 there will be a positive result from the large number of customers that we have seen sign-up in the recent quarters,” says Morten Elk, CEO

The startup got in november 2012 an investment of €1.7M from Kaare Danielsen, founder of the successful jobindex.dk, with the purpose of growing internationally. A plan that has been going very good so far.

“We’ve added six new countries in May and will open three in the coming months, so we are coming up on 24 countries in total. We expect that these new markets increase the growth rate to over 30 percent in the rest of 2013,” says Morten Elk.

The company has released some of their main numbers for 2012 to us, something that is appreciated by us and gives revealing facts about their business. Besides the income and EBIT they also reveal part of their user aquisition cost: Morten says that at the current trend, with their average retention-rate of 3 years of a costumer, their spending on adwords is only one third of the lifetime value per costumer.

The main numbers of 123hjemmeside (global operations) for 2012 where the following:

Income: € 4.46M (2011: € 3.68M)

EBIT: € -0.21M (2011: € 0.35M)

Number of costumers: 59 000

123hjemmeside is currently officially in the following countries:
Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, UK, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Russia, Greece, Portugal, Indonesia, Turkey, USA.

Next in line is Brazil, according to Morten.

Their business modell, of enabling easy to create webpages at low prices, might seem to be in direct competition with free-to-use solutions such as WordPress, but alot of users value the ease of setting thigs up. In this field the marketing budget seems so far to be the main growth factor – something that the team looks to have figured out how to do efficiently. It will definitely be interesting to hear 123hjemmesides numbers for 2013 next year!

123Hjemmeside is a service which gives users without IT skills the opportunity to build a website in a few minutes. In January they silently launched their new ‘shop module’ which allows customers to add an online shop to their site for an additional 99 USD. They made a silent launch in order to react to customer reactions and correct problems if any.
Since their official launch in February they have 1.200 customers who opted to pay for this service. According to 123Hjemmeside.dk those stores will contribute 750.000 Euro to 123Hjemmesides turnover in 2013.

“The success shows that there is a good business to give people without computer skills to create something on the Internet,” says CEO Morten Elk.

Some fact about 123Hjemmeside’s new ‘shop module’:
– Three quarters of the 1,200 shops established in Scandinavia, France and the United States.
– Half of the 1,200 shops are existing customers who have purchased the shop module. The other half are new customers since January.
– A shop costs 99 dollars a month on top of subscriptions to 123hjemmeside.
