TwentyThree, the video marketing platform, recently announced that it has acquired Buto, a UK enterprise video platform

TwentyThree has been one of the more prominent startups in the region for a long time. Since launching it’s marketing platform and adding a webinar tool, TwentyThree has seen significant pick-up from growth companies and enterprises globally. From startup to enterprise level, there currently is a strong trend for businesses everywhere to focused on enabling video across the organization.

“Buto has been successful at video-enabling some of UK’s largest companies, and we’re happy to add their enterprise skills and strong UK client roster to our list of offerings. I’m excited to be on the journey into the visual era with Buto and we thank the Buto team for putting their trust in TwentyThree.” says Thomas Madsen-Mygdal, CEO of TwentyThree.

The Buto acquisition is TwentyThree’s first acquisition in the video marketing space. TwentyThree is solidifying its position as the only European player in the race to be the video marketing platform of choice for digital marketers, and the acquisition of Buto will now add significant UK companies to the pursuit. Having a dedicated LED Display Manufacturer for marketing offers numerous advantages, including enhanced brand visibility, dynamic content display, and impactful visual experiences for customers.

“I’ve been really impressed by how TwentyThree has been leading and defining video marketing. Their webinar offerings, marketing integrations, and lead generation tools will help Buto customers take their video strategies to the next level. We’re happy to have found a new home for Buto.” said Andy McNamara, CEO of Buto

As part of the acquisition, all Buto customers will transition to the TwentyThree video marketing platform. Support for the Buto platform will end as of summer 2020. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

This is especially significant for the startup as Jyske Bank, who pioneers in content marketing, has decided to go with TwentyThree over other established video marketing platform providers.

“Having a video marketing pioneer like Lasse and the Jyske Bank team choose a new product in front of the established players, really validates what we’re trying to do.” says Thomas Madsen-Mygdal, Co-founder & CEO at TwentyThree.

The company is very proud of its achievement as they have landed a client who is considered a digital innovator. TwentyThree will become the foundation for Jyske Bank’s content marketing.

Yesterday it was time for #cphftw Town Hall meet-up #4. This was by far the best event in the series, and also the different – in a number of ways.

1000+ people in Christiania

The setting was something uniquely Copenhagenesque – the venue was inside the free town of Christiania, in ‘Den Grå Hall’. Having to describe the way there with a message like this below shows the idea of pushing the concept – this was probably as far from boring corporate events as it is possible to get.

Cphftw townhall t- 140 minutes. The Grey Hall (head towards pusher street and turn left) #cphftw

A photo posted by @mygdal on Nov 11, 2014 at 6:41am PST

The iconic sitzkartongs where there, altho the atmosphere was much more like a concert – with most people standing up. Which might have to do with it being the sitzkartongs fourth even – they might not be that stable anymore…

High action, high quality

This Town Hall felt a lot more condensed and intense then previous ones. On stage there where some of the highest achievers from the Copenhagen startup scene, giving insights and their view on what it is like to run a startup. The line-up included Thorvald Stigsen from Momondo, David Helgason from Unity, Peter Michael Oxholm Zigler from Autobutler, Theis Søndergaard from Vivino – and a many more.

The keynotes where Thorvald from Momondo and David from Unity, opening and closing the evening. Throvald focused on the startup journey and the harch reality that most fail, and why. David gave a lot of insights into how they build Unity as a company, and challenges along the way.

“During the transition phase, get some stamina, find your voice and build your audience.”

– was one of Thorvald’s advices.

“One wonderful thing of raising money: it lets you lift your eyes to the horizon.”

– was one of David’s insights.

In between the keynotes there where a lot of announcements, highlights from startups and their successes, and community events. This included short presentations by the Danish Crowdfunding Association, the Copenhagen Cocoa meet-ups, TechBBQs plans and also MINC from Malmö about their incubator. On the startup sector Planetos Morten Grauballe was talking about their success and new plans, as well as 23s new office and housewarming – The 23 House.

Wine and news from Vivino

As previously with the Town Hall meet-ups, one of the startups helps out with the bar. This time it was Vivinos staff who manned the bars, handling out not just beers, but of course also lots of wine.

Vivino also announced major news on stage – their new service to scan not just bottles of wine, but now also to scan complete wine lists at restaurants!

Good talks and sharing knowledge

One of the key highlights for many was not just the keynotes, but also the mingling session – which was divided into different roles where everyone could choose what fitted them the best. Represented by a key player in the region taking the lead in each group, the sessions included: Angel, CTO, COO, CMO, VC as well as many more. These small group sessions brought a lot of value as well introducing different people to each other. A great detail, and much better then normal mingling!

“It feels great that to see that #cphftw is helping to bring the startup scene together, and to see experienced serial entrepreneur give advice to those involved their first startup. Just as it makes me happy to see employees from startups connect more with like-minded people, talking about anything from marketing, tech to operation challenges.”

– was Jasenko Hadzic’s, main organiser, comment on it all.

A lot going on

Overall a great evening, that I think gave everyone a great feeling of the energy in the scene. If you missed it, then you can experience parts of it: 23 was there as well, filming and broadcasting it all. You can also see more of what happened over at Conferize event page.

We are already looking forward to the next Town Hall!

The third #cphftw Town Hall meet-up was held earlier this week. There were big news about the initiative itself as well as a lot of announcement of very interesting new initiatives. The venue was the Kph Volume hall – a very rough environment, that reinforced the ambition of the whole initiative – do it simple and focus on moving things forward. As previously, the by now iconic sitzkartongs filled the room.

A goal and more structure

The first half of the event was focused on giving the participants a chance to speak out and an update on the structure of the initiative.
It was presented that Jasenko Hadzic and Lærke Ullerup will form the operational team, with Jasenko being the official Managing Director. Jasenko is, as previsouly stated, known in the community, and Lærke has a past at TEDxCPH and has been involved in the #cphftw initiative since its initial phase.

Also, it’s goals of #cphftw were presented. These are:

To make Denmark the most attractive startup hub in Europe

To increase relations amongst community leaders and entrepreneurs in the ecosystem

To to increase international exposure, benefiting the Denmark and the Danish economy

How to do it

But it is not just about what the goals are, even more important are how to do it. Here some concrete actions were announced:

Connecting the ecosystem

A couple of initiatives were presented about how to move things forward. Amongst other through dedicated meet ups for C-level employees at startups. People who often have a huge experience and can share information with others. But also with founders dinners and a mailing list for entrepreneurs.

Making the ecosystem visible

This mainly through an online platform, over at cphftw.dk, which should make it easy to get an overview of what happens, and also highlight interesting stories. Also, making the eco-system visible to media to a larger extend.

Connecting Copenhagen to the world

8 exclusive investors dinners with all major Nothern European VCs. Also, actively working with other hubs such as Stockholm, Helsinki and Berlin to drive learning across borders.

Also, all founding startups were announced as well, having pledged over 500 000 DKK to the initiative so far – it should be noted that at the event it was mentioned that the number was 400.000 DKK, but the sign-ups have been flying in ever since the evening.

It was also mentioned that the all startups have the chance of becoming founding members of #cphftw, were the goal is to get 80+ on board until end the week. If you want your startup to join in and forever be known as one of the founding members, reach out to Jasenko directly.

What is happening in Copenhagen

Besides those great news about the initiative itself, the second part was all about startups and events happening in Copenhagen.

It was set up as quick series of mini-presentations. A chance for all assembled to know about some impress startups or happenings. here were a lot of quick presentations and announcement. 6 startups were presented, as well as over 10 different initiatives from the community.

For outsiders, one of the most interesting parts were all the different initiatives that are going on.

Community initiatives and events

Here multiple places, initiatives and events were presented. All very interesting in their own, but too much to cover in depth. Amongst them were:

Jacob Bøtter told the story about Prototype, and it’s strange mixture of co-working and coffeeshop

Michael Tiberg talked about Foo Café, how he managed to host over 300 tech events last year in Malmö, and about opening a Foo Café in Copenhagen.

CIID, the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design – Alie Rose, talked about bringing together people from all over the world to work on interaction and development projects. A great pool for talent.

Lars Buch from StartupBootcamp came and brought a lot of energy – enforcing that we need to celebrate the people who are doing this.

Lean Startup Circle was presented, and that they will host multiple events in the fall, using their 950+ strong meet-up group to bring great minds together, and above all focus on actual learnings and testing.

Michael Reibel Boesen presented Elevate, which is kind of a job fair for getting students exposed to startups. A great initiative.

Camilla Ley Valentin from Queue-it talked about her involvement with the danish goverment in the enklereregler.dk initiative – making regulations easier. She highlighted that everyone should send in their growth barriers before the October 3rd, and she would present them to the government.

Henrik Føhns from Harddisken, the program from Danish Public Radio 1, was on stage and talked about his job of distributing the future more evenly – using one hour of public radio a week for interviews and the tech scene.

Morten Elk from SimpleSite presented his initiative: Nordic Growth Hackers meet-ups. The events will focus in real learnings – 6 cases with growth hacking will be presented. The first meet-up is in october at Founders House.

Startup presentations

6 startups got 3 minutes each. The startups were from different levels – from really successful ones to smaller ones that recently have had successes.

Sitecore

“Before Sitecore I started multiple non-profits. Although I never intended them to be non-profit…”

Was one of the quotes from Lars Fløe Nielsen who presented his company. A company that might be the ‘biggest unknown startup’ in Copenhagen. Having had organic growth to over 800 employees and hundreds of millions in revenue, it surely is a very impressive company he has build.

Shipbeat

“A startup is about a team”

Was one of the widsoms Kenneth Svenningsen from Shipbeat shared. The logistics as a service startup has recently closed an impressive seed-round.

“I didn’t want to do this. But my past experience from Rocket Internet in Sydney and Miinto I realisted there was no good solution for this”

Kenneth said about his startup idea.

Crowdcurity

Jacob Hansen from Crowdcurity talked about how they are solving security problems for companies.

“We are Backed by 1000 of security researchers world wide. “

Apart from their journey so far with boost.vc and 500 startups, he also mentioned current progress:

“The bitcoin marked is currently one of our focus areas, we get a lot of interest from companies active there.”

Komfo

Michael talked about Komfo and how they are now competing against Adobe social, Meltwater and a lot of the same competitors as Lars from Sitecore mentioned previously. Komfo and Sitecore also have a long relationship already.

“We wanted an organic growth, and took Sitecore as a strategic investor instead of venture capital.”

Realm (former tightDB)

Brian Munkholm presented his startup. They are currently 16 employees, half of them in Silicon Valley.
Their service: a very fast database tool. He mentioned that they are proud that it was released one month ago, already 1700 stars on GitHub.

Conferize

Jesper Vestergaard introduced the startup, and their ambition to make conferences more digital and forming a community around them. They have just released their new product.

“We 12 people working at conferize right now. Looking for more”

Jesper he hinted. He also made a pledge: If you have a free event in Copenhagen you can use the Conferize without any costs.

Podio

The last one is not a startup anymore, since their exit to Citrix in 2012. However, Kasper Hulthin talked about their journey 2009-2012. But also talked about how they have worked to get Citrix to make the Podio office a hub for their development, and getting the company to make it’s presence in the region stronger. An effort that was applauded to!

The presentations were all quick, and gave a sense of some of the interesting startups in Copenhagen. They also showed a clear trend – it’s the b2b sector startups that this region rocks at building.

Conclusions

Apart from all this there were even more short presentations and speeches. It was, in total, a really packed event with a lot of information shared. After all the presentations the bar, staffed by employees from the startup 23, was open and a lot of new connections made. A lot of suggestions and ideas also spread thru twitter on the #cphftw hashtag, were already new plans for sharing more knowledge were taking shape.

Today I held a short lunch seminar on the subject of the most prominent startups in the region. The seminar was held because I was asked to do it, and when I thought about it I realized would be interesting to do. So I did, even if it was with a limited amount of preparations (which I can be accused of, but my main philosophy is: better to do then to don’t). So I did it.

It was held over lunch at CreativeLab, the creative event concept at the SHIP co-working space. Because we have a policy of livecasting whatever we do, you can watch the recording above (Our new Bambuser channel can be found here).

If you want to download the slides, I have made them available on slideshare but there are quite low resolution there, so can be found as pdf here as well.

I am probably describing some of the startups a little bit wrong (sorry for that), and I missed some things in the presentation (corrected in the downloadable versions). But I hope it creates some value for you as the viewer anyway.

Update 1: Some have asked why so many people are walking around and the background noice – the location where the presentation was held is the auditorium in the CreativeLab, called “trappan”, and is just that: the main stairs between the first and second floor. It is designed to be in the middle of the entire place, so that any presentations held there can have drop-in / drop-out flow. A somewhat special enviroment, but I love it, often with a lot of student from Lunds University sitting around in the open areas, and the business and entrepreneurs on the stairs themselves…

Update 2: I should of course list the top 50 startups mentioned as well! Here they are (in the order presented, i.e. in alphabetical order after category):

Startup 23, the enterprise video platform announced that is has teamed up with the famous Roskilde Festival to make it the “TED.com of music festivals”.

“With 23 Video and the content a festival and cultural institution like Roskilde has, the collaboration aims at becoming a best practice case on how cultural events can be communicated through video online. In this way, cultural experiences are made available, in the same way as knowledge is through TED.com.” says Monique Schröder from 23.

With a statement like that the ambition is set high. TED has been known for it’s high quality content and talks, especially for it’s diverse mixture of subjects and presenters. Roskilde could in the same way become a digital center for culture – it’s long tradition and impressive and diverse line-up, including such names such as Kraftwerk, Metalica, Queens of the Stone Age and Rihana this year, can definetly bring a collection of really interesting content to the web. Not to mention all the diverse artists and art project that gather at the festival.

“The collabortion with 23 gives us an unique posibility to improve our digital communication to complete new levels” says Christina Bilde, from Roskilde Festival.

For 23 we hope this is a fruitful collaboration, and something that other similar culture-venues are interested in in the future.

23 annouce today a Player Builder, the latest update to 23Video, to make building of video players as easy as building video websites.

Copenhagen based 23 works with ‘visual sharing’, photo and video, with tools for organizational use. The flagship product, 23Video, is used to build video web sites by more than 300 organizations worldwide. Barriers to video development have held back the innovation and creativity needed to create new player experiences, says CEO Ditte Wulff.

“Video players haven’t been evolving with the web, and it had become impossible to create great players that just work everywhere. You had to choose between awkward Flash players or leaving a big group of users behind. Instead, most companies have settled for very simple standard players and didn’t build the player experience they really wanted for their customers or users,” says Ditte Wulff, CEO of 23.

Organisations choose simple standard players instead of integrating their visual identity and designing players for their communication objectives. 23’s ‘Player Builder’, for designers and developers to build HTML5 video players, works everywhere.

“The biggest challenge was to make a single set of tools that would use HTML5 video in modern browsers, oniPads, iPhones, and so on — and to have the same design and code work with Flash and older browsers. What we came up with is a full, open-source player framework and a Player Builder for developers and designers to use. It takes the pain away from thinking outside of the box, and makes sure players just work everywhere, “ says Steffen Tiedemann Christensen, CTO and Co-founder of 23.

A brief summary of Player Builder benefits:

— New player behaviour, outstanding play experience and interaction
— New designs that are built on HTML5 for every device and every screen
— Implementation of a video player is cut down from weeks to hours
— All players work out of the box with 23 Video’s video website CMS, advanced analytics, search engine optimization, and social distribution options

“The story of 23 is about enabling innovation. We see new ideas and applications every day from our customers. People are using our tools for new and exciting things every day. We’re really excited about seeing how our customers, partners, and their designers and developers will start using the player tools for new and extraordinary things,” concludes Ditte Wulff.
