AlixLabs, a Lund-based deep-tech company building a new generation of semiconductor manufacturing solutions at the below 7 nm scale, has recently announced the successful closing of a € 14.1 million (SEK 155 million) Series A funding round.

The investment will enable AlixLabs to accelerate development and scaling of its proprietary Atomic Layer Etching Pitch Splitting (APS) technology, a disruptive process that enables more cost-effective leading-edge chip manufacturing.

The funding round was led by Navigare Ventures, Industrifonden, and FORWARD.one, all of whom are reaffirming their commitment as long-term partners to AlixLabs’ growth journey.

“We’ve believed in AlixLabs’ vision from the start. Their technology tackles a critical bottleneck in semiconductor scaling and opens a path to more cost-efficient advanced chip manufacturing,”

said Alex Basu, Chief Investment Officer at Navigare Ventures.

STOAF from Sweden as well as Global Brain, an independent Japanese venture capital firm that manages strategic funds and invests in semiconductor startups, joined the round.

“This Series A enables us to transform our APS innovation from customer validation to industrial adoption. We’re now entering an exciting phase where our focus turns toward beta testing with leading customers, a critical step on the path to full-scale manufacturing by 2027,”

said Jonas Sundqvist, CEO of AlixLabs.

This further strengthens AlixLabs’ international reach and industry partnerships. The proceeds will be used to expand the company’s R&D and production capacity in Lund and the Netherlands, deepen collaboration with foundry partners, and initiate industrial deployment of APS.

“Our technology has the potential to dramatically lower both energy use and costs per wafer, helping to make advanced semiconductor production more accessible,”

said Jonas Sundqvist, CEO of AlixLabs.

The global semiconductor industry faces rising capital intensity, soaring energy demands, and an urgent need to decarbonize production. AlixLabs’ platform offers a powerful new approach – enabling ultra-fine pitch splitting through atomic-scale precision etching, without the need for prohibitively expensive multi-patterning or exclusive reliance on EUV lithography. The result is lower process complexity, reduced power consumption, and smaller environmental footprint per wafer.

“AlixLabs is a clear example of world-class innovation emerging from Sweden’s deep-tech ecosystem. Their APS technology could fundamentally reshape the economics of advanced chipmaking while contributing to the industry’s sustainability goals,”

said Tobias Elmquist, Senior Investment Director at Industrifonden

Lund-based nanotechnology company Alix Labs, led by CEO Jonas Sundqvist, is making strides in developing advanced semiconductor components. Rapidus reports the startup has secured guarantees for two-thirds of the € 14.5 million (SEK 165 million) it needs to build a pilot facility and conduct beta testing with global semiconductor manufacturers.

Their technology, based on research at Lund University, uses a plasma chamber to shrink semiconductor components such as transistors and memory, critical for producing AI processors. These smaller components allow manufacturers to fit more transistors on chips, boosting performance—a key requirement for AI applications.

“With our machine, producers can manufacture these components at a much smaller size while maintaining the same performance. This allows them to pack many more transistors on, for example, a computer chip, enabling them to build much more powerful computers than today—something that is essential for AI applications,”

says Jonas Sundqvist to Rapidus

He expects a fully market-ready product by 2027. The startup is targeting global markets, including Taiwan, South Korea, the U.S., and potentially Germany.

Alix Labs has already begun testing its first machine with electronics manufacturers, using the advanced ecosystem in this region developed to supply high-tech projects like Max IV and ESS. The company anticipates maintaining some production in the region but is also considering expanding globally to meet rising demand.

Swedish semiconductor trailblazer, AlixLabs, has successfully secured over € 3 million (SEK 40 million) in funding to accelerate their pioneering work. Specializing in semiconductor advancements, AlixLabs has developed a revolutionary Atomic Layer Etching (ALE) Pitch Splitting technology (APS), which has attracted investment from amongst other Navigare Ventures, Industrifonden and FORWARD.one.

The semiconductor industry has long faced challenges related to escalating expenses, particularly due to the high costs of Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) equipment. AlixLabs enables a significant step towards transforming semiconductor manufacturing by making it more energy-efficient and cost-effective. Through their ALE Pitch Splitting technology (APS), they enable the precise division of nanostructures while significantly reducing energy consumption and emissions. This breakthrough has now caught the attention of investors, as it addresses the rising costs associated with current manufacturing techniques.

“The infusion of capital not only validates our vision but also empowers us to bring our groundbreaking technology to the forefront of semiconductor manufacturing. This investment marks a significant milestone as we work towards our goal: to have our meticulously developed process adopted by circuit manufacturers in their most advanced production by 2025.”

says Jonas Sundqvist, CEO of AlixLabs

AlixLabs’ innovation arrives at an opportune moment, with the European Union’s ambitious semiconductor initiative, the EU Chips Act, allocating substantial resources for semiconductor companies. With over 43 billion euros earmarked for the next five years, this initiative complements AlixLabs’ mission to drive technological progress and sustainable manufacturing.

“At Industrifonden, we’re committed to science-backed, scalable investments that have the power to drive meaningful change in society. AlixLabs is redefining semiconductor manufacturing and we’re proud to support them on their journey towards a more efficient and sustainable industry.”
