Copenhagen Suborbitals are gathering funds to continue work on their world’s only manned amateur space program to show that it is really possible to run a space program without major government budgets and administration. The team has a simple ambition: to launch one of them into space and have her/him safely back.

Copenhagen Suborbitals is a non-profit suborbital space endeavor based entirely on sponsors, private donors and part time specialists that was initiated in 2008. So far, the team has launched several rockets and tested 2 space capsules and has booked the last two weekends of August (2015) and the first two weekends of September as their launch window for the Nexø I rocket. You can follow rocket launches on their youtube channel.

There are about 50 people who are working on the project in their spare time, and the goal for the fundraising is gather money necessary for further research and development as well as logistics around the rocket launch. The campaign hits its finish line tomorrow, so there is still one more day left to get your name associated with one of the world’s most exciting space projects by contribute to the fundraising campaign. More info is here.

Come and witness the test of the 16 meter tall and 1,200 kg propellant heavy Heat 2X engine in the new 160 ton VTC-3 test stand.
Even though visitors will not witness the rocket flying off, they will not be disappointed because smoke, loud noises and special rocket sausages will take care of the entertainment. After the ignition of a 90 second full burn test, visitors have the chance to get a close look of the rocket stage.

The second test launch will be an extraordinary experience, so do not miss it! Stay updated on CopSub’s web side , in case of any changes or delays due to weather or technical conditions.

During the test, the 16 meters tall engine Heat2X will be set in motion and burn 1,200 kg of propellant.

Just a few days ago Copenhagen Suborbitals have moved into a new 750 sqm facility which marks a start of a new era, shares Kristian von Bengtson in WIRED. The facility is located across the street from HAB (pictures). Having enough space now, Copenhagen Suborbitals hope to provide their followers with even more exciting adventures and results. The old place will be kept for large structures like ship-hulls and service towers.

“I am not sure about the mechanisms in place here – but there seem to be magic in the air and a lot of people supporting our work. Our decisions to expand, buy new machinery, vessels or just making moves seems to be “approved” and donations are coming in,” says Kristian von Bengtson

The deal for the new place that included December rent, 3 months deposit and interior fitting from the previous owner amounted to about 26,000 euro. Social media and phone calls were of great help for rising the money as well as private sponsors to whom Copenhagen Suborbitals are very grateful to.

“There will be some sort of an open-house event for all, likely on the other side of December – but no dates has been decided yet. Also, I hope to have a special surprise for you all during that event. Once again – Thank you so much for supporting us!” says Kristian von Bengtson.

Copenhagen Suborbitals are still working on the name for the new facility and would be happy to hear some interesting suggestions. So share if you have any. We hope that the new facility will help Copenhagen Suborbitals to achieve even more mind-blowing results. Good luck!

Even if not strictly a startup, this is the entrepreneurial team with the highest (pun intended) ambitions – trying to establish human space travel with private and crowdfunded investments.

Copenhagen Suborbitals managed this weekend to make a successful testlaunch of the Sapphire rocket, an active guided rocket.

Just as previously the testlaunch was in the sea outside southern Sweden, an a costume-built launch platform. The aim of the test launch was to get data and see if the concepts for the active guiding of a rocket works. This is important for further development, as future rockets must have the ability to correct any deviations from it’s planned path.

Kristian von Bengtsson, the initiator of the project, blogged about it on Wired. The launch did go almost perfect – with important data being gathered and the hieght of over 8200 meters being achieved. Top speed: 344 m/s.
The only bigger problem was that the parachute did not deploy as planned, and the rocket crashed into the ocean instead of a soft landing as a result. However, as the main aim was to collect data the launch was deemed a great success, even if the landing was “hard”.

For more information about the rocket and facts check out this article.

Kristians says it himself:

We have entered a new era and from now on things will become big, powerful and crazy. I love this project and the people I am working with.

We will, as always, continue to see what happens with the team at Copenhagen Suborbitals in the future!
