Fieldly, the Skåne based proptech startups gets a new investor for € 2 million (SEK 21 million) for its international expansion. The investments comes from existing investor Christer Dahlén, the founder behind Byggmästar’ in Skåne.

The startup focuses on smaller construction companies and is developing an app and web-based digital project management tool that will ensure saving time and money for the construction industry. It will give better control on the projects from work orders to personal files.

“Partly it is about us developing the software itself and then about entering rest of the Nordic region,” says Christian Dahlén to Rapidus.

Fieldly’s CEO Valle Wantzin comments to Rapidus,

“We have new sales record for the 8th quarter in a row and as of today have used and created value in over 350,000 projects,”

The investment will primarily be used for scaling up sales and marketing and it’s cross border expansion. As per the co-founder, Sven Paulin, Fieldly has activities throughout the Nordic region, and sales is a big focus now.

The PropTech startup continues to focus on Sweden, but has also explored other markets. The startup reports 80% of it’s customer base is in Sweden, but that it has achieved initial customer acquisitions cost as low as in Sweden even in other markets.

The startup has not been badly affected by the COVID-19 crisis either.

“You never know what it would have been like without the crisis, but we have had continued very strong growth and new sales. We are probably relatively unaffected, as it is the status of the construction sector that affects us in the first place. It might have gone even better without the crisis, but we still consider ourselves lucky, ” says Sven Paulin, co-founder of Fieldly to Rapdius

In 2019, subscription revenues for the statups project management tools increased by 130 percent and the largest increase came during the autumn. The startups reports they currently has over 30.000 registered users.

Malmö-based (previously Helsingborg-based) startup Fieldly works on digitalising project management for construction businesses, and offers both app- and web-based services. Currently Fieldly has over 25 000 registered users, and in one year the company expects to have doubled that figure.

The startup has recently raised 1.5 million EUR from the existing owners in order to accelerate internationalisation. What is more, there is a shift between Fieldly’s CEO and chairman.

Anders Boman has now become the CEO. He had worked as the portfolio manager for Oxford University Innovation and LU Innovation, prior to being the chairman of Fieldly. The co-founder, and previously the CEO, Daniel Krusenstråhle is now taking over the chairman and product manager positions.

“Since we were founded five years ago, we have had a great product focus and invested in finding a good “product market fit”. Now we have found it, and we are therefore ready to invest in scaling up our sales organisation. Daniel’s great passion is product development and this is what he wants to focus on, when we now enter the next phase”, says Sven Paulin, the co-founder and marketing manager.

Fieldly has been experiencing a steady growth, especially during the autumn. According to Sven, this is a monthly increase of about 10 percent, in terms of recurring revenue. This means that net sales for 2019 will land at over 650 000 EUR, twice as much as 2018.

“We are moving forward as never before with very satisfied customers. For example, a site manager in a customer case from Veidekke indicates that our product saves at least an hour per person per day”, Sven continues.

The startup currently has paying customers in six countries and will now invest in a further international expansion. Initially, the sales organisation in Malmö will be responsible for the investment, but the company is also considering opening offices in selected parts of the world.

The new capital comes from existing owners with Christer Dahlén at the forefront. Other investors include business angels such as Mårten Öbrink, Jan Karlander, Dan Nilsson and Lars Dahlén.

The last month has been an unusually active one when it comes to investments in the region. We have made an overview, just to give an insight into some of things that have happened! Here are some of the most noteworthy recent investments into startups in the Øresund region in May.

Tradeshift
The biggest recent one was of course Tradeshift. The first FinTech startup that has reached “unicorn” status, being valued at over $ 1 billion! Tradeshift is based in Copenhagen and it received over € 212 million from Goldman Sachs, as well as a number of other investors. You can read a lot more about that at TechCrunch and a host of other sources as well.

“We have always believed that the future of supply chains is 100 percent digital and that connecting trade is just the first step to a digitally connected economy. This investment will enable us to continue our rapid growth and consolidate our leadership position.”

– is one of co-founder Christian Lanng’s many comments on this. Impressive work building the company to this stage.

Ear Labs
Ear Labs, a Copenhagen / Malmö-based company that produces ear phones and ear plugs, has received over € 650.000. The Ear Labs’ team has created ear plugs that protect ears underwater. Now they are working on ear plugs that could be used in nightclubs and other noisy environments. The project was founded by Swedens Almi Invest and other investors in Denmark and China.

Ann-Sofie Hörlin, Investment Manager på Almi Invest, commented their recent investment:

“Ear Labs has developed a unique product with many uses in a scalable market. They work in a competitive area, but with their sharp team and a product in front edge, we see big potential for the company.”

Fieldly
Fieldly, has reported an investment of € 1.22 million. Fieldly provides digital project management systems for construction businesses. Their product makes communication between building companies and construction sites easier. Time reports, material usage and deliveries can be reported directly in the smartphone or tablet app. The biggest investment came from Roland Zeller, a Swiss business angel, as well as angels Christer Dahlén, Dan Nilsson and Mårten Öbrink.

Fieldly’s co-founder, Daniel Krusenstråhle, said:

“We have spent our first four years proving that we operate well with small and medium-sized companies. Now we have reached the point when we feel that our product is ready for bigger challenges and so is our organisation.”

With the investment the startup also announced they moved into bigger offices in Malmö.

Pleo
As we already reported, another fintech investment that happened in the region was Pleo, raising the biggest Series A investment so far in the region. The funding of € 13 million will be used to grow outside the startups initial focused cities, and bring it’s services and it’s special employee credit card to more markets.

Nikka Systems
A lesser known startup that recieved investments in May was Nikka Systems, a Malmö based statup focusing on education about IT security. The company received funds from Kjell & Company’s co-founder, Marcus Dahnelius.

“You can see that there is a big need for IT security in companies of all sizes. We are already getting request for our products, before they have been launched” says Marcus Dahnelius.

Tame
Another funding we have already covered, that was announced this month, was Tame. The event planning startup has been under the radar until now, but has a strong team and impressive angels backing it. The startup raised € 450.000 in it’s first round.

Undo
A Copenhagen-based startup Undo has received over € 3.3 million from Tryg. Undo has developed an app, which will let you get a custom-made insurance in just a few minutes. At the moment, their target audience is young people up to mid-30s, who do not know much about insurance whatsoever.

“To get an insurance is complicated and it takes a long time, and many are afraid of the process, because they cannot really understand what they buy and at the same time they get stuck with long binding time and huge cancellation fees. Almost all insurance services operate with a fixed package, but it can consist of many coverings you do not need, With us you choose only the necessary things, and you pay per month, no fees or binding time”, explains Sophie Bohr Grønbæk, co-founder of Undo.

Now Undo opens innovative insurance solutions for people in Copenhagen and Aarhus, planning to extend to other Scandinavian and European cities too.

Uizard
And finally, Uizard, a startup from Copenhagen raised € 670.000. The startup turns a wire-frame or mock-up into a source code, so the designer and developer workflow is improved and less time is spent on writing a code from scratch.

Lund University founded its own holding company with different portfolios. However, it didn’t make any quick success, according to Rapidus mapping carried out in this regard on LU Holding.

Lund University has been operating its holding company since 1997. Twenty years later, there are still previous and current portfolio companies with no revenues. Accounts of every third company have exceeded more than SEK 500,000 (ca. € 52,000) as net income according to the latest financial statements. Only 10% of previous and current portfolios have shown earnings. A set of portfolios have either been canceled or went bankrupt.

The culminating companies are dominated by companies that are still, wholly or partially, dependent on venture capital. There are still high-profile companies with good investment outcomes in the Öresund region, such as Fieldly, BoMill, BioInvent, SolVoltaics and Glo.

“Generally speaking, many of our projects are far from the market. They need a lot of venture capital. GLO is a clear example, as the company has received more than one SEK billion (ca. € 1,200 000) , most recently from Google, which means that it is on track. But they have no black figures yet, “says Lund University Innovation Director Linus Wiebe.

In recent years, LU Holding, though, managed to attract over SEK 50 million (ca. € 5200 000) on its investment activities, primarily by selling shares in portfolio companies, above all those that chose to go to the stock market at an early stage. Expectedly, there will be a double-digit amount for the acquisition of Mistbase by the British company ARM.

This is in comparison with the SEK 1.5 (ca. € 156 000) million that the future Malmö University’s new holding company shall get from the state, if the government’s proposal goes through.

“It will be a challenge to build up an investment business with such a small capital base. And it takes time, as well, says Linus Wiebe.

He points out, however, that there are also other points with a holding company, in particular, that the university can enter into joint ventures in various collaborative projects or pursue activities related to research and education in a corporate form.

Recently, the LU Holding became an important player in the eco-system of Skåne region. This year, it supported researches proposed by the university. The main goal of the university is not to make money, but to help the research-based companies that can contribute to the social development. LU Holding is a combination between academic work and business.

Researching is the base of LU Holding work, and the bulk of LU Holding investments exists in nano-tech, IT and medicine, i.e. scalable sectors that enabled the company to profit tenth of millions SEK in the recent years; such figures that Malmö University with its holding company dreams of.

The Helsingborg-based Fieldly extends its investments and receives SEK 2.8 million (ca. €290,000). Four business angels play now an essential role at the company: Roland Zeller, Dan Nilsson, Jan Karlander and Mårten Öbrink, reported Rapidus.

“They are very talented individuals with extensive knowledge and experience. This will be important for the company’s continuous growth,” Fieldly’s CEO Daniel Krusenstråhle told Rapidus.

Fieldly manufactures and sells an app- and web-based project management tool for the construction industry. This spring, the company received SEK 3.2 million (ca. € 333,000) from the shareholders Lars Dahlén and LU Holding. In addition, the company reached 10,000 users so being a big company with several employees, using a software like paystub to manage payrolls make more sense. So far, Fieldly has customers in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Poland, Canada and Sweden.

Previously, Fieldly has shown an interest to invest about SEK 50 million (ca. € 5200,000 million) to expand in Europe. Till now, there is no tangible agreement on the table. However, the company is moving in that direction according to the co-founder and marketing director Sven Paulin:

“This investment is not much about capital. It is about getting people who can enrich the company with strength and competence. This is an important step in preparing for such expansion, says Sven Paulin.

Lars Dahlen, business angel together with Lund University’s holding company – LU Holding AB has just invested SEK 3.2 million (€ 0.3 million) into Fieldly, Sweden-based company.

“Fieldly has a great potential to change the future of the construction companies like those who use equipment that are listed for sale by owner. Personally, I find it very inspiring to be able to contribute to the shift of the construction sector’s digital paradigm and prepare Fieldly for a leading position in this sphere.” says Lars Dahlen who accounts for the largest part of the capital.

Fieldly was founded in 2013 by Daniel Krusestråhle. The company has introduced a new project management system aimed to facilitate communication between the construction companies’ offices and the employees out on the construction sites. It enables its users to report digitally without any need to use pens, papers, folders, and even emails. Thus, this digital tool is aimed to make the process of reporting smoother, faster, and more efficient. Despite its short history, Fieldy has already received a number of awards. Particularly, the company was named “Company of the year” during 2014 Student Business Challenge and won the Venture Cup 2014.

Fieldly has reached 10,000 registered users and according to Sven Paulin, the Chief Market Officer, 2016 was a good year:

“In terms of sales, we have experienced strong growth last year compared to 2015. In 2016, we have really proven our product on the Swedish market. We have also broadened our product. Now, we see incredible time and cost savings for our customers. Our system halves the time of the office administration. In addition, it also saves at least one hour per day for the craftsmen and the subcontractors on the field.”

As for now, the main goal of DX2 is to become a standard tool within the construction industry and prepare the ground for its future European expansion.

“Right now we are preparing our product for the European market. In addition, we are also optimizing our internal structures that will allow us to grow further. For us it is important to do the right thing at the right time and in the right order,” says Sven Paulin.

Fieldly, a Sweden based company is expanding globally and to achieve their goal the company is planning on taking in financing in the amount of 50 million SEK (€ 5.3 million).

“We see that interest in our product is growing in Scandinavia and Europe and it is growing organically. We are not in need of capital right now, but we need to prepare to meet the demand and to take Fieldly to the next level,” says Daniel Krusenstråhle, CEO and founder in Digital.

Fieldly is a digital tool that simplifies project management for construction companies. The benefits of using the application are projects that are on schedule and within or below budget, while at the same time providing control over expense reports. It also measures increasing margins, billable hours and black numbers.

The platform consists of a desktop interface designed for the supervisor in the office, as well as a mobile application used by field workers. The supervisor can assign tasks, keep track of supplies, materials and costs which are then looked up by the employees. The app provides detailed information on the tasks to be performed and in what order, and reports back when the chores are done. The end customer, typically the house or plot owners who hired the construction company, can use Fieldly to update themselves on which parts of the project are ready and what is next in line. The construction sector has begun to see the benefits of being digitized.

“We see that our customers will save at least one hour of work per user per day by not having to go to the office to account for and report on, the way they have always done,” says Sven Paulin, Chief Marketing Officer and co-founder.

Fieldly’s customer base is mainly in southern Sweden but the company has been spreading across the country and have recently released their service in Poland and Finland on demand from the construction companies there. Preliminary figures show that Fieldly had sales of SEK 2.9 million (€ 0.3 million) in 2015 and the forecast for 2016 is SEK 10 million (€ 1 million).

The night to Monday the 4’th, a new id-control was instated between Denmark and Sweden. This means that travelers now will have to show valid id every time they cross the border. The changed circumstances have led to prolonged travelling times, which have notably affected the people who work on the other side of the border.

Sven Paulin, the co-creator and head of marketing of Fieldly, daily takes the train from his home in Copenhagen to Fieldly’s main office in Helsingborg. Last Monday the id-control led to a doubling of Paulin’s travelling time. This day, it took him three hours to get to work.

“Normally I can ride all the way in the silent zone and in the same train. This time, I had to change three times. In the future, I will be able to shorten the time by matching the trains better, but of course, it affects us who work in the region. We will have to move, change jobs or companies will have to move.” Says Sven Paulin in an interview with Breakit

Sven Paulin is also concerned that the control will have dire consequences for the open mobility in the region.

“I thought ‘is this the end of the free and open mobility that has been so wonderful down here?’ A mobility that so many people value.” Says Sven Paulin

A third of the staff delayed

The online shop Boozt has been confronted with similar problems. Around a third of the employees, working at Boozts office in Malmø, travel from Denmark. The control has resulted in daily delays between 20 and 30 minutes.

“We hope that it will be short-lived because in the long run it will be difficult if a big part of the staff is half an hour late every day. But it’s difficult to say now how it’s going to be,” says Hermann Haraldsson, VP at Boozt.

The employees have been able to get work done in the train and the delays haven’t therefore yet been a significant problem.

The 1’st of April, Boozt will move their office from the main square in Malmø to Hyllie. This transition is mainly due to a need for additional office space but also serves to get closer to Denmark. Fieldly is similarly thinking of establishing an office in Copenhagen, thereby accelerating their expansion to Denmark.
