Flatfrog closes €6.1 million (60 million SEK) funding round

Flatfrog, a Lund-based multi-touch systems provider, has closed a €6.1 million funding round. Among the investors are Luxembourg-based Finvus Invest and the Danish venture capital firm Sunstone Capital, according to DI Digital.

Flatfrog has developed a technology that enables unmatched in-glass multi-touch performance for large and flat displays. The so-called “InGlass” technology offers market-leading touch or pen performance, optical clarity and contains features such as pressure detection.

The company successfully closed another financing round with existing investors earlier this spring, bringing in €4.3 million (42 million SEK). In order to finance the continued development of its multi-touch technology, Flatfrog recently closed a new capital issue of €6.1 million (60 million SEK), giving the company a value of roughly €21 million (208 million SEK).

Among the recent investors are Finvus Capital, Sunstone Capital and founder Christer Fåhraeus through his own company Fårö Capital.

Flatfrog’s current sales strategy is primarily geared towards the educational sector, with the long-term intention to replace classroom whiteboards and projectors with its touch-sensitive large screens.

In the future however, Fåhraeus hopes that Flatfrog will be able to reach the boardrooms and meeting rooms, hence replacing traditional televisions and projectors.

Flatfrog was founded by Ola Wasswik and Fåhraues, and is headquartered in Lund. Since its inception, the company has received nearly half a billion SEK in venture capital.

Serial entrepreneur Fåhraues has previously been involved in a number of tech companies, including CellaVision, Anoto and Precise Biometrics.

Flatfrog takes in a new investment

Lund-based Flatfrog, that develops alternative multi-touch monitors and tablets, has taken in an investment of 42 mln SEK. The money comes from the owners Sunstone Capital, Finvus and the founder Christer Fåhraeus, according to Rapidus and Di Digital. Flatfrog has previously taken another 42 mln SEK last fall, and according to Christer Fåhraeus the plan is add even more capital in the fourth quarter.

Flatfrog uses InGlass patented technologies for their screens. Instead of making use of a grid of pressure points, Flatfrog uses an approach that measures change of light in the glass when someone presses on the screen. The technology makes it possible to make large screens pressure-sensitive at a lower price.

Flatfrog was founded in 2007 by Christer Fåhraeus and Ola Wassvik. Since the launch the company brought in nearly half a billion in venture capital, including from the processor manufacturer Intel. Company’s offices are located in Lund, Sweden, Taiwan, the US and Korea.

Flatfrog picks up 7.3 million euro investment for further development of its touchscreen technology

FlatFrog, Lund-based display technology company, has received a €7.35 million investment from Invus, Sunstone Capital, and Intel Capital at the Las Vegas’ Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES) reports Arctic Startup. The money will be used to commercialize company’s new touchscreen that uses zero air gap technology that together with a single cover screen glass allows to create thinner and lighter designs that help to avoid parallax issues when viewing at wide angles.

Additionally FlatFrog Touch natively supports pressure sensing with over 10-bit resolution and allows drawing and writing without the need of stylus.

“We are seeing very strong reception to our FlatFrog in-glass optical touch product from consumer PC OEMs and other large screen size format players. The fact that our existing investors fully subscribed this round reaffirms the confidence in this technology and progress made by FlatFrog,” said Dhwani Vyas, CEO of FlatFrog. “I welcome the continued support from our investors, and look forward to successful commercialization of this technology.”

Øresund Startups: Top50 and state of the region

Today I held a short lunch seminar on the subject of the most prominent startups in the region. The seminar was held because I was asked to do it, and when I thought about it I realized would be interesting to do. So I did, even if it was with a limited amount of preparations (which I can be accused of, but my main philosophy is: better to do then to don’t). So I did it.

It was held over lunch at CreativeLab, the creative event concept at the SHIP co-working space. Because we have a policy of livecasting whatever we do, you can watch the recording above (Our new Bambuser channel can be found here).

If you want to download the slides, I have made them available on slideshare but there are quite low resolution there, so can be found as pdf here as well.

I am probably describing some of the startups a little bit wrong (sorry for that), and I missed some things in the presentation (corrected in the downloadable versions). But I hope it creates some value for you as the viewer anyway.

Update 1: Some have asked why so many people are walking around and the background noice – the location where the presentation was held is the auditorium in the CreativeLab, called “trappan”, and is just that: the main stairs between the first and second floor. It is designed to be in the middle of the entire place, so that any presentations held there can have drop-in / drop-out flow. A somewhat special enviroment, but I love it, often with a lot of student from Lunds University sitting around in the open areas, and the business and entrepreneurs on the stairs themselves…
