Mapping the startup ecosystem

Two initiatives played a central role in the discussion: Øresund Startup News, where we cover the latest news of founders, startups, and innovation across the region, and the Öresund Startup Map, a platform designed to make the startup ecosystem easier to explore.

On their website, Öresund Startup Map comes with an actual map of startups in the region; not only that, they have updated events people can sign up for, and job opportunities across Skåne and Greater Copenhagen. By the time of its launch, the map already has 900+ organizations free to explore.

Whether you are a founder looking for connections, investors discovering companies, or organizations looking for collaborators, both of these initiatives help make the startup ecosystem more visible and accessible for everyone, 

One region, more opportunities to discover

This lunch talk at HETCH highlighted a simple but important challenge for the Øresund startup ecosystem, which is to connect people with opportunities that already exist nearby and to build awareness of what is happening in the region. 

For Øresund startups, the takeaway is clear. Building a stronger cross-border ecosystem is not only about creating more events, but it is also about helping people discover what is already happening across the cities and the other side of the bridge.

Alongside the funding, the company has released Klang Pianissimo, the first model on its new streaming endpoint. Until now, transcribing Swedish meant recording the full audio and waiting for the batch to finish. With the new endpoint, text arrives while people are still speaking, and the finished transcript is ready when the stream ends.

This makes Klang one of the few companies in Europe set up to train and release open-weights models.

Pianissimo is trained for Swedish as it is actually spoken, dialects included. In Klang’s benchmarks, it processes an hour of audio in about a second, with every token pinned to 80 milliseconds of audio. The endpoint is compatible with the OpenAI realtime API, meaning developers already streaming audio to a US provider can switch with just a base URL and an API key. Audio is processed on Klang’s own hardware in Sweden, and nothing is stored or used for training.

The investment just raised is from business angels such as Johan Lenander, Emil Sjödin and Daniel Gadd. It comes as human conversation becomes a core information source in an AI-driven workplace, while many existing tools still send sensitive speech data to large US cloud services. Klang.ai positions itself as the European alternative, ensuring that information stays under local control.

The new capital will support continued product development and international expansion across the Nordics, Benelux, DACH, and Japan, as well as around ten new hires across research, development, and marketing.

The expansion has already shown remarkable results. Just a few days after launching in Japan, the country accounted for over 50% of Klang’s new daily users.

“A few days ago, 0% of our new users were from Japan. On Saturday it was 50.4%. More people signed up from Japan that day than from every other country we sell in, put together.”

The decision to enter the Japanese market aligns with Klang’s mission to close the performance gap between English and other languages in speech technology. By specializing in individual languages, Klang has been able to outperform general models, a strategy that began with its focus on Swedish.

At the current speed the startup estimates that in a couple of weeks total sign-ups from Japan might be higher then from all other countries. This growth highlights the demand for high-quality, localized speech technology and underscores Klang’s ability to deliver performance and trust in non-English languages.

Klang.ai’s Role in Social Services

Klang.ai’s AI program transcribes, summarizes, and makes lengthy client conversations searchable, offering significant benefits in areas like child assessments where sensitive topics are discussed and extensive documentation is required. The technology aims to streamline administrative tasks, allowing social secretaries to focus more on client interactions and support.

Helsingborg has a reputation for trying and testing new innovative services, and pushing the boundaries of the regulatory system.

The new round includes investments from returning backers Anders Frankel, co-founder of Apsis, and Emil Sjödin from Malmö-based Refined, as well as a new investor, the tech profile Joakim Jardenberg.

Expansion Fueled by Growing Demand

Klang AI specializes in AI-powered transcription and analysis of recorded interviews, catering to clients such as law firms, researchers, and public sector organizations. The startup has gained traction, amassing approximately 40,000 users in Sweden this year.

In a recent article with Rapidus co-founder Niklas Silfverström states that Klang.ai’s vision is to drastically reduce manual tasks surrounding interviews, aiming to cut down on hours spent planning, transcribing, and analyzing to just minutes.

We also believe there is a need for local actors who achieve really good results in smaller languages ​​such as Swedish and other Nordic languages. Several customers have benchmarked us against the giants and stated that our results are the best,”

With nearly 27.000 users and a few hundred paying customers, the startup’s revenue is on track to reach € 500.000 (SEK 5 million) in 2024, meeting operational costs. Revenue is projected to double in 2025, driven by a focus on the legal, journalism, research, and public sectors. Swedish Tech News earlier reported that Klang.ai has received around € 500.000 (SEK 5 million) in funding, helping fuel its mission to be the go-to solution for secure AI-driven transcription in Europe.
