The event quickly became a success and has now become a global phenomenon. Today, the Nordic Startup Awards are a part of the Global Startup Awards (also founded in Denmark) and its winners compete with representatives from other regions of the world (over 60 countries).

“There aren’t really any connections between those who are dealing with tech. And this is true all over the world. There are a number of regions where it really makes sense to do some cross-country collaboration”, Kim continues.

The winners of this year’s Nordic Startup Awards have been announced in early December out of the total 3 000+ nominations, and will now compete on a global scale.

The winners from the Öresund region include:

• Best Newcomer: Good Monday – an easily scalable workplace management platform;
• Best Fintech Startup: Brickshare – a revolutionary online investment platform;
• Best Hardware Startup: SOUNDBOKS – innovative battery-driven speakers;
• Startup of the Year: Pleo – a payment card solution with features such as automated expense reports and company budgeting;
• Investor of the Year: byFounders – a collective of founders that support other founders in the Nordic and Baltic regions;
• Best Coworking Space: Mindpark – a creative coworking space that is available in Helsingborg, Lund and Malmö Hyllie.

Other winners are from Sweden are:

• Best Health Tech Startup: Nuvoair – an integrated platform that improves the lives of those suffering from respiratory problems and helps make faster medical decisions;
• Ecosystem Hero of the Year: Malin Frithiofsson – Head of Community Management at Chalmers Ventures.

From Norway:

• Best AI/Machine Learning Startup: Spacemaker AI – using AI to optimise the maximum potential of construction sites;
• Best Accelerator or Incubator Program: TheFactory – helps early stage entrepreneurs who have a business idea, early product or scalable concept.

From Finland:

• Best Creative Industry Startup: Grib3D – a user-friendly app that brings 3D designs into real life using augumented reality;
• Best Social Impact Startup: Intellectural Farms (iFarm) – an innovative technology for growing natural salads, berries and vegetables year-round in fully controlled automated environment.

From Iceland:

• Founder of the Year: Kari Thor Runarsson – one of Europe’s top tech innovators.

• The Startup of the year award went to the Danish startup Templafy, a company aiming to solve what they call a ”document anarchy” in companies.
• Investor of the year was claimed by Hampus Jakobsson from Malmö.
• Founder of the year went to Jan Erik Solem also based in Malmö, co-founder of Mapillary.
• Eco System Hero of the Year went to Sissel Hansen from Copenhagen.
• Best accelerator or incubator of the year went to Copenhagen based Accelerace.
• Last but not least the best AI/Machine learning startup went to Corti, a company aiming to use AI to help medical dispatchers make life saving decisions.

At the awards ceremony selected winners in various categories from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland were narrowed down to one absolute winner in each category. And while all the nominees and finalists deserve the title of winners, here are those who are voted to be number one:

• Startup of the Year: Falcon Social (Denmark)
• Best Social Entrepreneurship Tech Startup: Be My Eyes (Denmark)
• Startup Journalist of the Year: Neil Murray (Denmark)
• Developer Hero: Martina Elm (Sweden)
• Best Professional Investor: Creandrum (Sweden)
• Best Accelerator: Startup Reykjavík (Iceland)
• Best Bootstrapped: Dirtybit (Norway)
• Founder of the year: Kristo Ovaska (Finland)
• Best Newcomer: Smartly.io (Finland)

Both Danish companies in the best startup categories have shown impressive growth.

Back in March Falcon Social, with its SaaS social media management platform, closed funding deal in Series B which amounted to 15 € million. The financing round was led by Prime Ventures and joined by existing Falcon Social investors Northcap and Target Partners, bringing the company’s total financing to date to 23$ million.

Be My Eyes, an app that helps blind people via connection them to a sighted person through a video call, was launched back in winter. The project generated a great deal of interest, and in just one day after the launch the new app had over 10.000 users, the number which is counting.

Neil Murrey won the category of the startup journalist for his contribution through The Nordic Web, a website that takes an in-depth look at the Nordic technology scene and provides data-driven insight and analyses.

Not to self-promote, but worth mentioning is the fact that OresundStartup’s very own Karsten Deppert is one of few Swedes to be nominated for Best Startup Journalist.

Other than this, awards will be presented in the categories of Best Newcomer, Founder of the Year, Best Investor, Best Service Provider and Developer Hero: the winners of which will be selected by a panel of industry experts.

For now, it’s time to place your bets on your favourites. Public voting on the shortlisted startups is currently open. Be sure to use your votes wisely as you only have one for each category.  Perhaps a review of past articles on some of the nominees, including Vivino (Startup of the Year), Fitbay (Best Newcomer) and Creandum (Best Investor), will help secure your judgment. National winners will be announced the 16th May.
