Malmö-based company Packbud has developed a digital service that matches people who need something moved with transport- and moving companies that have space in their trucks. The goal is to make use of spare capacity in the transport sector. Now the company is closing an agreement with Sweden’s largest online buying and selling market Blocket and will become a shipping option in the private advertisements on their website, reports digital.

The collaboration will begin with a trial period to collect data on how customers want to arrange transportation of furniture and gadgets, but the partners hope to develop the service further.

This is a huge opportunity to show that our service is working and that there is a great demand. For us, Blocket is one of the best partners one can have, says the company’s CEO and founder Michael Funa.

Packbud was founded in 2013 by alpine skier Thomas Fogdö and entrepreneurs Michael Funa and Par Wrede Dahl. Since its inception, the company has taken in 4 million SEK (over 400.000 euro) in venture capital from venture capital firm Aggregate Media and a variety of angel investors.

Already hundreds of transport- and moving companies are connected to Packbud. Most of the users are individuals who purchased something on a buy- and sell website. The service is also used by small businesses for smaller shipments.

We are looking at a solution for door-to-door delivery to make it as smooth as possible for the Swedish people to buy and sell from each other. We are pleased to have Packbud as a partner in this. They can solve the delivery of basically anything, while at the same time the service is environment friendly, says Jan Prokopec, president of Blocket.

Update: the article previously made the claim PackBud has recently raised 3 million SEK. This is however wrong, PackBud has raised in total 3 million SEK. We apologise for the misunderstanding!

Packbud, a Malmo-based startup, is a new digital service designed as bidding platform for transportation services. The idea is simple, users who need help with transporting different items, such as for example during a move, create an inquiry on the Packbud’s page. Once the request is public, transport companies make bids, offering their price for the service. The goal of the service is twofold: to make it easier for individuals to find transport service and help logistics companies to fill up cargo space in their trucks.

Just recently Packbud took in another € 100 000 (1 million SEK) in venture capital from it’s current owners, venture capital firm Aggregate Media and business angels, to ensure further growth, reports Breakit. In total the company has gotten € 300 000 in investments.
Last year Packbud had sales of SEK 2 million SEK (over 200 000 euro). This year the goal is to reach about 6 million SEK (over 600 000 euro) in sales.

Packbud was founded in 2013 with initial focus on providing transportation services for individuals by individuals. But realization that it is logistics companies that have the means and also interest to carry out transportation services quickly led to change of focus. Currently about 400 transport companies are connected to Packbud.

“Today we are the only company to provide transportation assistance to individuals and businesses in this way. We work with all kinds of distances both within and outside of Sweden. It can be anything from furniture and cardboard boxes for garden machinery or motorcycles,” – shares Mikael Funa, co-founder and CEO.

Thomas Fogdö, former alpine skier, is the one who came up with the idea. As a person who travels a lot, he noticed that it is wasteful to drive half-empty car. So he started thinking of ways to solve this problem together with Pär Wredendahl and Mikael Funa.

8till5 reports that Packbud has received an investment of 3 Msek (€ 316 000). The investment comes from Aggregate Media and five business angels. It will be used primarily for marketing purposes.

Packbuds idea is simple – using free space in trucks and match that with companies or people that need something moved.

“We want to become the Ebay for transports. Our aim is to become the largest market place for this type of services on the Swedish market” says Mikael Funa to 8till5.

Mikael is one of three people in the team working full time on the product.

The service is currently available in Sweden. With almost 300 transport companies connected, they make it easy for anyone who wants something transported by just entering what needs to be transported.

“The idea is that transport companies can optimize their loads, and customers should be able to find a transports easily. Better use of space is good for the economy and the environment.” says Mikael

Today, 90 percent of customers are private consumers. Queries include things such as moving furniture, mopeds and pets. Packbud charges partly through a small service charge, and by charging carrier with a sum equal to ten percent of the transportation value.

The service was launched 1.5 years ago and so the startup has received 4000 requests – without putting any focus on advertising. With the investment this will change.

“Marketing is a big part for the upcoming year, but we will also release a new site, mobile version and updates during the first quarter of 2015.”

You can read more about it over at 8till5.

Erik Starck with The Frank Family have collated photos and the full list of exhibitors here.

So what happened there? A lot! While there wasn’t enough time to see and talk to everyone, there was a great range of companies with unique ideas, at various stages. From those just getting their plans down on the brown paper to others scaling up stage and fully operational, it was a lot of activity and exchange of ideas, and great for mingling.

Lots of ideas to watch, and here is just a small sample of those on show:

Enjoy Sweden: search portal and multimedia platform is a handy site for local and international tourists with domestic travel advice, planning accommodation and activities.

A freemium service that works with Facebook sign up and facebook events, it’s main hubs right now are Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, and they’re eager to spread the word through users and friends, so it’s a social idea that grows.
This is a convenient and clever way to browse a range of menus from local restaurants, for event catering or dinner with friends. Glimworks is operating already in Lund, with expansion planned.

Tiny Vineyards: Nice personalisation idea to customise your wine, from selecting the grapes from the Spanish vineyard, creating the custom bottle design and vintage, and come harvest time your own vintage of wine is ready! Getting ready for next January when the grapes start growing – something special for individuals or businesses, look out for the website coming soon as this gets going.

World Academy: Like the MOOC concept, World Academy (looking for a new name) in the education space was an idea presented for an online platform linking teachers online, with students who want an education in a specific topic
