A real problem

Swiftcourt is also an interesting startup considering it’s place in the Øresund region. Started with co-founders studying law at Lunds University, they competed and won at the Venture Cup. About Swiftcourt

The idea of Swiftcourt originally came from Jakob Elander when he saw that legal disputes under € 10 000 never reached the courts. Because of global competition regarding technology, communication and new business models, one can see a trend moving from incubators to accelerators. Focus lies in speed, learning and mentorship. And THINK decided that having it’s old 2 year program was not needed in todays fast-moving envirment.

About the program

The idea of the accelerator program is to enhance digital startup’s competitiveness. This is done through a three months program, where the entrepreneur will be guided through the stages of ideation process and prototypes’ developing. The grand finale of the program is the day of pitching the idea to business angels and other investors. During the whole program one will have access to coaching by mentors and business coaches like those from small business coaching Edmonton.

“THINK is a lean startup accelerator based at Mindpark in Helsingborg. We help promising startups grow through coaching and mentoring, a great workspace and access to business angels and investors” says Johannes Ivarsson.

From incubator to accelerator

Since THINK started as an incubator in 2012 the program has been home to startups such as Fieldly, Swiftcourt, Bilprospekt, HOI and Digitalpost. These companies, and additional ones, will continue to be a part of the THINK network to share knowledge and experiences from their own startup journey. Overall very promising startups have been part of the previous THINK incubator program.

Winners from the entire region

A part of the startup section was a startup competition, which had four winners. The winner were from all over the region – both Copenhagen, Lund and Helsingborg. An interesting mix:

• Fieldly – Online-based task management tool.
• Pinstriped – Branding laptop desktops.
• Sensefarm – A precision farming tool.
• Swiftcourt – A new way to settle out of court.

Except that the winner where in different business areas as well as from all over the region, wwo of the winning startups are part of the THINK lean startup incubator – an achievement they were proud of.

Deep dive into the startups

Fieldly:

• Created 8 month ago Daniel Krusenstråhle (previous co-founder at FOAP) and Sven Paulin with office in Helsingborg
• Created an interface in cooperation with construction firms that allows to monitor the construction project
• Workers can download an app to log in and out of work and communicate with their coworkers
• Project manager can see life shipping, progress, pricing etc
• Clients can also oversee the construction process
• Their goal: to be a standard for the industry

“Fieldly has the vision to simplify the work in the industries that have staff on the ground. Our first version is aimed at the construction, plumbing and installation company, and consists of a web interface for staff in the office and apps for field staff. Our aim is to facilitate communication, make time tracking easy and do construction projects even more successful” said Sven Paulin from Fieldly (pictured above)
 

Pinstriped:

• Started in november 2013, based in Copenhagen
• 10.000 sign-ups to their service so far
• Of those are 6.000 users (because it is MacOS only for now, the others are waiting for the Windows version)

Sensefarm:

• Created 2011 in Lund
• Initially consultancy project for Nordic sugar
• Measures temperature outdoor, water, soil
• Helps farmers to farm more economically and ecologically
• Senseform can help cities to save energy, such as: L.A. 10.000 trees planted would lower city temperature by 2-3 degrees

Swiftcourt:

• Started in summer 2013 by law-students in Lund, now based in Helsingborg
• A new standard clause enables plaintiffs to settle out of court, cheaply
• Won the regional finale at Venture Cup
• Just launching the first version of their service

Apart from Cyclicor’s first place, 3 startups where runner-ups, in 3 different categories:

• Web, software & media: UserApp
• Society: Swiftcourt
• Life science & tech: IRezQ

Cyclicor is a spin-off from Lunds University. Their unique and patented process for enabling non-toxic manufacturing of plastics was deemed the startup with the highest chance of success – both from the business perspective, as well as environmental and market size. The world-wide market for this kind of processes being in the 50+ billion dollar range.

“In 10 years we will be a billion dollar company”, said a confident Kristofer Cook, CEO at Cyclicor

With such ambitions and a business as well as research-focused team, Cyclicor emerged as strong winner.

The runner-ups: from the tech sector

The remaining three winners where from the tech or app sectors, with very different ideas:

UserApp has created a service that helps smoother integration for user registration for apps. A service aimed at developers and startups, which has already gotten some traction, and Timothy, on of the co-founders, recently got a lot of attention for his 100 growth hacks in 100 days blog-marathon.

IRezQ is a startups focusing on using smartphones and their sensors for creating a collision detection device, that automatically alerts emergency services in case of an accident, as well being able to warn other. The team behind it is a true all-star team, and the ambition is to reach millions in the next years.

Swiftcourt is something as different as a startup in the juridical business area with a focus on the digital markets. Their aim is to make it quicker to reach settlements for civil suits up to the €10 000 range. An area where few lawsuits are made today because the costs are too high compared to the money at stake. But with their standardized and quick processing solutions, they aim to make it worthwile to reach settlements even on small disputes.

Overall the quality of the teams and ideas was high and international, especially compared to previous years. Venture Cup recently re-made how the competition works, and the new process seems to have paid off, with a increase in the level of pitches and ideas that participate.

It was a great program – the only major caveat from our perspective is that we hope the next event will be held even more in English. This would make it even easier for the startups participating and the event itself to get international attention. Something we think would be beneficial for both the startups, as well as Venture Cup itself.
