The medtech startup from Malmö is opening a sales office in the British capital, according to Rapidus. Trialbee‘s CEO Lars-Olof Eriksson mentions that the Malmö and London offices will be sharing their European clients. They also have 7 employees in the US office.

Trialbee develops a platform for digital patient-study matching and engagement services for clinical tests. The aim is to accelerate drug development for pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations globally. Trialbee has also developed an app that makes organisational issues between a patient and a pharmaceutical company much more simplified – just with a few clicks a company can hire a patient or prolong a drug prescription.

“I am thrilled to be guiding such a diverse and talented team – it’s a company where people with executive experience in pharma and clinical research are now working seamlessly with best-in-class programmers and interaction designers”, says Anders Tullgren, the chairman of Trialbee, to Industrifonden.

Having received significant investments in 2013, 2015 and 2017, Trialbee continues to develop and expand. The company has previously been mentioned in top 33 most successful companies in Sweden several years in a row.

Danish SimpleSite, a service that enables users to build their own websites with ease and simplicity, has won Red Herring Global award. The company’s CEO, Morten Elk, represented the company at the ceremony in Los Angeles, USA.

The 100 finalists at the Red Herring Global were selected from more than a thousand technology companies worldwide. And SimpleSite was the only Danish company represented at the ceremony.

For SimpleSite, running several million active free websites and about 100,000 paying customers, the Red Herring Global award was important in terms of finding investors who can support the company’s future growth.

“We know that investors are very aware of Red Herring, so the award is important for us if we want to attract funding to maintain and strengthen our position in the global “DIY-websites” market where we compete against three to four major players,” shared Morten Elk.

Among Red Herring Top Global 100 is also Malmo-based Trialbee, that works with software solutions that optimize clinical trial process. See the full list of Top Global Winners 2015 here.

Red Herring Award highlights the most promising tech companies in three regional awards for Europe, North America and Asia, which then lead to the global event in Los Angeles. Many winning companies later become prominent companies, or being acquired by industry. Facebook, Google, eBay and Skype are among former Red Herring Global winners.

Engaging Care, an e-health company that aims to help people achieve a sustainable lifestyle change, is launching new business partnerships with Trialbee, Mindful Eating Centre, Ola Jansson and HiQ according to 8tillse.

The Malmö-based e-health company’s goal is to provide a platform for patients of chronic illnesses as well as their loved ones and doctors. By analysing the patient’s health history, an individual treatment program can be tailored for those who wish to improve their health. The company’s focus now is on helping obese people who have undergone surgery with Aspire method to transition to a healthy lifestyle. The finished product is expected to be launched in the beginning of next year.

The core of the service is an engagement platform that provides advice from healthcare professionals about various topics such as managing nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress. Engaging Care has already attempted teaming up with Alien Interactive to use its existing platform. Alien Interactive has great expertise in developing web-based platforms. The collaboration however, ended quickly as Engaging Care was in need of a platform that was personalised for its services specifically.

Engaging Care is now partnering with Trialbee, a company operating in Malmö as well. Trialbee is a software company that specialises in advancing clinical research by providing a platform for all stakeholders in the clinical trial process to communicate effectively. Their services include online patient recruitment, online feasability evaluation and study retention that prevents patient drop outs from trials.

„Trialbee are skilled at managing personal health data and large development projects. We create synergies and customer value by working across sectors.” – explains Annica Carnbring Belfrage, CEO and Co-founder of Engaging Care on 8tillse.

Engaging Care is also forming partnership with other organisations in the healthcare industry, including Ola Jansson, Lunda Company Mindful Eating Center and HiQ.

„I am pleased to be able to take advantage of the main competencies in various fields. We want to help our users to an engagement that leads to a permanent lifestyle change over time. Engagement must permeate the entire company and we do that best by working together and taking advantage of our best skills.” – says Annica Carnbring Belfrage.

Industrifonden and Briban Invest along with another couple of investors invest $ 5 million (€ 4.3 million) in Trialbee, 8till5 reports. The startup has developed a tool to help pharmaceutical companies to streamline patient recruitment for clinical trials.

“Trialbee has a long list of successful implementations of cutting edge technology in the market for online health. Trialbees technology and solutions benefit both the industry and the people in need of new and better treatments.” says Lars Henriksson, Investment Manager at Industrifonden.

Trialbee has developed an online platform that makes it easier to find patients for clinical trials, including the use of online advertising on search engines and social media.
Jonas Billing and Tobias Folkesson, colleagues from Sony Ericsson, started Trialbee in 2010 in Lund. Now the office is located in Malmö, and the startup has had prevous investments – both by angels Hampus Jakobsson, Johan Lenander, Karl-Anders Johansson and Jan Barchan, as well as Industrifonden and Briban invest in 2012 already.

Trialbee’s method reduces the recruitment period compared to traditional patient recruitment via physicians and advertisements in newspapers, making the drug can reach the market faster. With clients such as Novo Nordisk, Sanofi Aventis and Astra Zeneca, the company has seen great growth.

U.S. market

The funding is aimed at hiring more people, and to break into the U.S. market.

“We predicted that 2015 would be the breakthrough year when the pharmaceutical industry switched over from traditional patient recruitment to more effective onlinebased channels. Now we see the transformation happen. The investment result puts us in a good position to further expand our business, recruit and help customers save time and resources during its clinical trials.” says Tobias Folkesson, CEO.

For the 7th year NyTeknik and Affärsvärlden made the list of Swedens 33 hottest tech companies. Last year we had 5 startups from the region on the list, this year those have increased to 6!

The six startups that made the list are:

Anolytech

Avidicare

Mapillary

Simris Alg

Sol Voltaics

TrialBee

Last years winners were Neo Technology, Zaplox, Sol Voltaics, Anolytech and Trialbee. Three of those kept their places, but Zaplox and Neo Technology are no longer on it. Why that is we do not know, but from Zaplox going strong with the latest news where about big orders and large collaborations, and the guys at Neo are moving even further into the U.S. market.

Newcomers on the list

New on the list are Mapillary, an ambitious startup by veterans from Neo, PolarRose and Apple – aiming to do what Google has done with streetview but enabling it everywhere. You can read an interview with Jan Erik Solem that we have done earlier here.

Also new is Simris Alg, a company that aims to take food production to a new level, using specialised algea, that recently announced a new round of € 1.3 M funding.

And the third newcomer on the list is Avidicare, a MedTech startup that works with air-contamination in healthcare.

If you want to know more about the other startups, you can do that here: Anolytech, Sol Voltaics and Trialbee.

The prestigious list includes 5 Øresund region companies (click for Ny Teknik articles): Neo Technology, Zaplox, Sol Voltaics, Anolytech, and Trialbee.

Developed in in Malmö, Neo Technology is still running hot with its Neo4j graph database, having moved its head office to the Silicon Valley, and hits the 33-list for the third year running. Newcomer cleantech from Ystad, Anolytech, appears for its enviro-friendly process to contribute to a world with less toxins and antibiotics, providing big problem solutions.

Zaplox, from Lund, is unlocking us from physical keys, to open doors with smartphones. The application for mobile keys include check- in and out services and pay-by-phone at hotels. Sol Voltaics, is developing solar cells efficient and economical enough to compete with fossil fuels.
The competition criteria considers market potential, access to financing and management daring-to-challenge attitude, rather the typical employee numbers or turnover measures. The judges conduct interviews with business, technology and industry experts to appoint with the final winners come from all industries, all over Sweden. Check out the full list.
