The startup, founded in 2010, has developed and patented a system to handle door locking using mobile phones. Zaplox system gives companies worldwide the opportunity to improve the efficiency of key management and to create new services and processes through the use of mobile keys. It can already count SkiStar, Sony Mobile and HTL amongst its customers.

The money will be used for further expanding into the European and American markets.

“We are experiencing a large interest from customers in Europe and the U.S. and will now be hiring a few more people to expand further.” says Magnus Friberg, CEO at Zaplox.

The startup raised the money mainly from the German family Mankel, represented thru the company 4M Beteiligung. In total the startup has now raised almost € 6 million, with Swedish Industrifonden and LMK ventures being amongst the investors as well.

I am probably describing some of the startups a little bit wrong (sorry for that), and I missed some things in the presentation (corrected in the downloadable versions). But I hope it creates some value for you as the viewer anyway.

Update 1: Some have asked why so many people are walking around and the background noice – the location where the presentation was held is the auditorium in the CreativeLab, called “trappan”, and is just that: the main stairs between the first and second floor. It is designed to be in the middle of the entire place, so that any presentations held there can have drop-in / drop-out flow. A somewhat special enviroment, but I love it, often with a lot of student from Lunds University sitting around in the open areas, and the business and entrepreneurs on the stairs themselves…

The Zaplox system to lock and unlock doors using mobile phones will provide simplification and rationalization for staff and visitors to Vasakronan properties, to access locked unattended spaces. This includes for example technical control rooms that need to be accessed by external personnel for service and maintenance. Instead of handing out permanent keys, personnel are now sent a key via mobile.

The building managers have control over when a door opened and closed and who performs it. The system also eliminates the problem of keys going ‘adrift’ since the key cannot be used after. The system can easily be connected to the property owner’s case management system so the work order and key are integrated. When the work is finished, the ‘key’ is finished.

‘This is a problem all property owners have sought a solution for, as long as keys have been found. With new technology creates Zaplox large efficiency gains for all property owners’, says Stefan Gripwall, co-founder of Zaplox.

Zaplox works with all mobiles in all teleco networks,around the clock, all year round, and can be controlled remotely. Keys are collected using a mobile app available for download in the Windows Marketplace, Android Market, BlackBerry App World and the Apple App Store. Integration with customers’ existing systems occurs through Zaplox API and separate interfaces for users and management. Communication between the door lock and a local Key Manager is wired or wireless via Bluetooth, and the entire system can be used in parallel with key cards and physical keys.

Zaplox was founded in 2010 at Ideon Innovation Lund, by Stefan Gripwall and Lars Tilly. Today Zaplox locks are installed at buildings including Skistar, Ikano and Hotel Lundia.

Developed in in Malmö, Neo Technology is still running hot with its Neo4j graph database, having moved its head office to the Silicon Valley, and hits the 33-list for the third year running. Newcomer cleantech from Ystad, Anolytech, appears for its enviro-friendly process to contribute to a world with less toxins and antibiotics, providing big problem solutions.

Zaplox, from Lund, is unlocking us from physical keys, to open doors with smartphones. The application for mobile keys include check- in and out services and pay-by-phone at hotels. Sol Voltaics, is developing solar cells efficient and economical enough to compete with fossil fuels. The technology improves efficiency of energy capture, generation and storage using nano-materials, is based on world-leading research conducted at Lund University. Trialbee, Lund-based software developers, are using web-based statistical models and a collaboration platform between patients and pharma companies, to increase speed and accuracy of patient recruitment and retention in clinical trials.

The competition criteria considers market potential, access to financing and management daring-to-challenge attitude, rather the typical employee numbers or turnover measures. In the best newcomer category (operating less than 12 months) we find the Swedish startup Applika, the Danish Admazely and The Eye Tribe

The Danish Click a Taxi, Riidr, IconFinder and the Swedish Flattr are nominated as best funded startup. This group represents firms which have received professional funding from a VC or professional angel.

In the international category (must have started operations in the Nordics) we find Endomondo, Zendesk and Tradeshift, Zaplox and Kvittar.

Only one startup from our region is nominated as bootstrapper of the year Splitter (received no professional funding), and also the peoples choice award is only represented by Tunaspot, a firm which plays into new developments in the music industry by providing a location based music platform.

Most honorably, Podio and Miinto were nominated for the prestigious Startup of the Year award!

Founders House, Copenhagen School of Entrepreneurship and The Copenhagen Nokia Bridge Incubator are nominated as the best service provider, well deserving the recognition for their help and services to the startup industry. YEoS is also nominated, an organisation for young entrepreneurs which has a strong presence on the Swedish side.
