Vanja Plicanic Samuelsson’s passion for tech and entrepreneurship took her from being interested in natural sciences to being one of the rare female start-up founders. Her passion for developing new products and taking it all the way to the market inspired her to found Qoitech – an energy optimization company which has big potential to change the way IoT businesses look at energy consumption.

Öresundstartups News spoke with Vanja about women and tech, her own professional journey up to the current challenges of running the startup Qoitech, whose solution Otii helps IoT developers optimize their products for longer battery life and lower environmental impact.

Exploring the world of tech

Vanja’s professional growth took off in 2004, after receiving an education in electrical engineering and technology management at Lund University, when she joined European Space Agency (ESA) in the Netherlands as a trainee within the area of antenna technology. She always believed the space industry would be her “place to be” – but after a year of gaining experiences and knowledge, she realized she wanted to work in a more fast-paced environment to grow further personally and as an engineer.

“You learn your strengths, and in what type of environment they are needed and can be best utilized”, she says. Despite having a rewarding job, she soon realized that she missed digging deeper into technology. She then went on to get an industrial PhD, to fulfill her personal aspirations in combining gained skills in academia and applying them in tech industry and vice versa.

Moving back to Sweden, Vanja got a chance to continue her career at Sony Ericsson in Lund, working with mobile communications.

“It’s fascinating to see research being applied in real products for people to use. For many, research is something very theoretical and distant from everyday tech, when in fact it is an invaluable foundation”

When studying for her PhD, Vanja also gained hands-on experience that she now benefits from as a start-up entrepreneur: profound market research and how to pitch your ideas: “I’ve learned from the best. Academia is all about pitching your ideas and raising funds for your next endeavors.” If you want to build outstanding products and services for your customers, you need a thorough understanding of who they are, what they need, and where their pain points and priorities lie. You may visit the Qualtrics homepage to learn more.

Meaningful tech

“I loved looking into the future, and working with IoT (Internet of Things) and 5G, long before they became buzzwords. Predicting potential challenges and solutions to overcome them is quite exciting and a great responsibility. Being part of a team that does that really well, really keeps you on your toes. Our vision for that future lead to the creation of Qoitech.”

In her work with researching 5G at Sony, Vanja was exploring how new, cellular IoT connectivity impacts the battery life of connected devices. She needed a simple yet comprehensive tool to conduct field testing on the topic, but it didn’t exist yet.

This was the moment when Vanja realized there was a gap in the market. She teamed up with company experts on power saving in order to compile, redesign and execute some already existing ideas. This was how Otii, the developer tool for energy optimization now offered by Qoitech, was born. Vanja and her team have a vision to make Qoitech the go-to-place for IoT developers to find tools, services and knowledge on the topic of low energy consumption:

“With the predictions of billions of battery driven devices around the globe in the coming years, we all should focus on product usability, usefulness and energy impact, as well as environmental consequences in the long run. With Otii, we want to empower developers and their companies to create sustainable solutions in an easy and affordable way”

Qoitech’s team is driven by bringing products and services to life in order to improve businesses, people’s approach and environment.

On entrepreneurship

True entrepreneurship is an involved one. It is based on caring about people and the surroundings. As an entrepreneur and a leader, Vanja focuses on providing her team members with a healthy environment of transparency and trust that they need in order to work to the best of their individual abilities, which are then unified as a team towards a common goal. For her it is important to make them feel that they are a part of something bigger, fulfilling the role of contributors and owners, at the same time, with room to learn and progress. Coming from the corporate world, she first needed to adjust to the different pace and high level of uncertainties that you have to deal with when running a startup.

However, despite the high pace and obligations to all stakeholders, Vanja emphasizes how important it is to take a step back and reflect:

“There are always lessons to be learned and you need to pause and revisit the big picture, its best if you can do it on a regular basis”

When asked for tips for aspiring entrepreneurs in tech, Vanja’s advice is to learn to distinguish what is relevant for you personally and your startup – especially in tech, there are many hypes, trends and advice from all sides that you don’t necessarily need to follow. Rather, ask the question for the specific business, listen and learn, but also accept failures along the way. When mistakes are made move on quickly and learn from them, as long as it teaches you and your team something valuable, the mistake was worth it.

Women in tech

Vanja, as a female founder, is still significantly underrepresented in tech, even though the numbers are slowly growing. She reflects on it as an outdated expectations from society on women’s and men’s roles and what girls and boys are expected to show an interest in.

Vanja believes this issue needs to be addressed early, for example in schools, by leading and motivating by example. A mentor herself, through organizations such as Mentor.se and Transfer, more often than not Vanja meets students that envision tech as something too complex, brainy and boring. She wants to show them this perception could not be further from the truth. It’s important to showcase what tech really is; what you can make out of it, and where your imagination and perseverance can take you. The key is to spark the curiosity and inspire children.

One interesting observation Vanja has made is that women in tech are in general more successful than men. The explanation would be that once women enter the field of tech, they tackle it with higher interest, commitment and qualifications.

“I hope we can encourage more young girls and women to get fascinated by tech and to want to take lead. But also to encourage young boys and men to be comfortable with professional choices, roles and titles that traditionally aren’t considered respectable or ‘cool’ for them to pursue”

The times are changing, ever so slowly, and Vanja is glad that the conversation is happening, hoping that we can break the glass ceiling in start-ups, in tech and in general, for women and all who can contribute to a fruitful diversity.

Biking together with investors and other European tech companies for charity? This is the idea behind Nordic Maker’s bike ride from Copenhagen to Berlin, which will also be great for networking.

TechBikers is a collaboration of various members of the tech startup community to help children in need by supporting various charities. Since 2012 about 200 tech professionals – including start-ups, venture capitalists and executives have cycled more than 2.500 km in five rides in 5 countries to raise money for those charities.

Now, the investment company Nordic Makers, including the online pizza founder Erik Byrenius, TAT founder Hampus Jakobsson and investor Benjamin Ratz, has launched a similar cycle project together with the venture capital company Cherry Ventures in Berlin: Between 15th -17th September 2017, 60 people from the Northern European start-up scene will cycle from Copenhagen to Berlin.

In addition to the money the cyclists collect, Rising North, part of the Nordic Council of Ministers, also supports the project economically. The fundraising goes to the “Room to read” charity whose purpose is to improve literacy and increase accessibility to education for girls in developing countries. Although the total of 420km requires some training, cycling, in this case, is more likely to be seen as an opportunity to meet others in the world of start-ups to share thoughts and ideas, as Benjamin Ratz points out:

“The startup culture differs tremendously between the different countries, and we believe the companies can learn a lot from each other if they are given the chance”

Opportunity to meet business angels and investors

So far, about 90 people have been asked to join the bike ride, but Benjamin Ratz states that only 60 people will be selected, half of whom will be investors or business angels.

Among the investors, Marta Sjögren at Northzone and Sanna Westman at Creandum will participate, as well as representatives of Danish Sunstone, Finnish Inventure and French Daphni.

According to Sanna Westman, networking is not only important between start-up companies but also at venture capital level.

“This industry has a different dynamism than other industries. Even though Creandum on a level competes with other VC companies, there is also a lot of cooperation, like joint investments. Then many of our leads come from business angels. Networking is important and for me who are new to the industry maybe even more”

However, the bike ride is not expensive but it requires some effort. The cost per ticket is around SEK 3,000, which includes food and lodging, but in order to participate, the person also needs to shrink at least SEK 5,000 from friends and acquaintances as a form of sponsorship. There, Benjamin Ratz has encountered problems with the Swedish tech companies:

“In Scandinavia, we do not have the same culture to ask friends and acquaintances to support a good deed financially. It is a big difference from, for example, Great Britain where it is very common”

Veronica D’Souza is a social entrepreneur with heart and soul who strongly believes in using innovative business solutions to improve the world. In 2011, she co-founded Ruby Cup, which addresses the lack of affordable menstrual hygiene products for women and girls in poverty.

Since then she has been recognized as a ‘Global Shaper’ by the World Economic Forum and was designated as the youngest jury member at INDEX, an award honoring the best sustainable, life-improving designs. With an educational background in international business, politics, languages and culture, she founded CARCEL in 2016, a Copenhagen-based fashion label whose products are produced by women in prison and made from 100% natural materials.

She spoke with Öresundstartups News about her journey as an entrepreneur and aspirations to create sustainable business strategies to address and alleviate global issues.

The power of sustainable business models

Veronica began both of her businesses, Ruby Cup and CARCEL, by identifying an overlooked issue, finding proper solutions for it, and at the same time, making the solution as well as the cause attractive for people so they want to be a part of it. It is with this mindset that Veronica launched Ruby Cup. Founded in 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya, Ruby Cup, a menstrual cup, gives girls the opportunity to go to school during their periods by providing a menstrual cup as well as education about reproductive health. At the time, menstruation was an extremely overlooked issue in the developing world. Veronica is proud to have helped raise awareness for this issue and develop solutions that make real, life changing differences for girls:

“I believe in the power of sustainable business models to address societal challenges and scale these solutions. There is something very dignifying in seeing people as resourceful rather than as victims that need help. It is also my belief that if you provide opportunities for women, you help the entire family”

The idea for her second start-up, CARCEL, was based on her visit to a women’s prison in Kenya, where she identified the main cause – and overlooked issue – of female incarceration: poverty. By establishing a clear and smart business model, she combined her interest in business with her passion for helping women pursue a better future. Gain a competitive edge in the online landscape with comprehensive seo free tools.

“If I could provide these women with new skills and a market, they would be able to make a good salary while serving their many year sentences – this way they could save up for their release as well as support their children.”

One of Veronica’s core beliefs as an entrepreneur is to develop and offer solutions that are both attractive and in demand. With CARCEL, she and designer Louise van Hauen envisioned making a fashion label whose customers do not purchase clothes out of pity for its producers – in this case incarcerated women – but rather because they are convinced the clothes are fashionable and well-designed. In this regard, she has changed the discourse from poverty victims to one of empowerment. It’s also important to know your worth when you want to embark yourself in the entrepreneurial journey just like Veronica.

First-hand experience from an entrepreneur

She compares life as an entrepreneur with being an artist, as you are never disconnected from your work. On the one hand, your passion can become completely embedded in your life but on the other hand, there is a lot of insecurity and financial risk involved. Entrepreneurs and experts like Google’s Director of STEM Education Strategy, Kamau Bobb recognize the comparison between entrepreneurship and the life of an artist, with its blend of passion, creativity, insecurity, and constant connection to work, that can also resonate with individuals in STEM fields who share similar traits and experiences in their pursuit of scientific and technological advancement.

On reflecting upon my personal experience, acquiring a pre-established business in a locale like Naples, Florida can be an astute investment. I recall when I first made the decision to buy from Truforte Business Group’s selection of Naples businesses for sale, the existing infrastructure and established customer base proved to be an invaluable boon. In truth, a well-versed broker can be instrumental in this process, as they offer insight into the best prospects and expert advice on negotiation.

For other entrepreneurs who are just starting a business, she recommends learning from other successful women entrepreneurs like Cortney Fletcher at eCom babes before you feel you are ready. It is only then that you can find out whether you were right about your business idea and, more importantly, whether you want to spend your life building it. Moreover, it is important to test your idea to ensure that others will love the idea or solution you are so passionate about, all while maintaining a strong focus on a winning mindset.

Lastly, Veronica D’Souza sees building an engaged and passionate team that contributes to the success of your idea as crucial. Besides, it’s no fun doing this journey all on your own.

In August, CARCEL’s new online store will be launched. Its first collection will be presented during Copenhagen Fashion Week.

In the morning of May 30th 2017, TerraNet Holding AB entered Nasdaq First North’s stock trading.

Based in Lund, Terranet delivers a patented software technology that enables intelligent machine-to-machine communication and streaming of data, for sending audio, image and data – regardless of any mobile network or other hot-spot dependent networks. Among other things, this technology can be used to distribute movies and music in areas that lack connectivity or to allow vehicles and machines to communicate with each other. The company’s clients include global microchip companies, mobile operators and multimedia distribution companies, as well as OEM suppliers in the automotive and manufacturing industries.

First North is Nasdaq’s European growth market, designed for small and growing companies. Using a less extensive rulebook than the main market, the First North market provides companies more room to focus on their business and development while still taking advantage of all the positive aspects of being a listed company.

Share capital value of SEK 211 million

TerraNet’s stock was traded for SEK 16.8, almost 29% above the subscription price of SEK 13. This subscription price gave the company a share capital value of SEK 211 million, which was heavily oversubscribed in May and provided the company with approximately SEK 100 million before issue costs.

The listing issue has been over SEK 300 million. Among the investors are already existing ones such Dan Olofsson (Danir AB), Qlik founder Måns Hultman and Knutsson Holdings AB. There are also external investors, such as Ålandsbanken, which invests SEK 10 million through two funds, the industrialist Sverker Martin-Lööf and the author and criminologist Leif Persson.

As part of the Go Grow acceleration program of the Copenhagen School of Entrepreneurship (CSE), twelve young startups had the chance to push their businesses to the next level of growth. At the capstone event, the Go Grow Demo Day on May 24th 2017, which also represented the graduation from the program, they pitched their ideas in front of Copenhagen’s startup- and investor community and an expert jury (Peter Inselseth Jørgensen, COO at Praice; Kim Wiencken from Northcap and Jakob Heiberg, COO at Kaffekvaernen).

Supporting startups at an early stage to reach international growth

At first, Program Director Dorthea Nielsen went more into detail about CSE as the Copenhagen Business School’s entrepreneurial incubator which started in 2007. Since then, more than 700 teams went through the accelerator program which is designed to make the participating businesses thrive and suit for international growth; in a period of four months of close collaboration with personal mentors, experts, CSE staff and other startups. She pointed out the diversity among the startups in this year’s spring batch, which reflects in their pitches and emphasized the importance of culture within the businesses themselves:

“A successful startup nurtures a culture of excellence that works as a domino effect fostering long-term economic benefits and happiness for the startup”

The following startups made their final pitches:

Arono created an app which provides customized simple diet plans, focusing on nutrition as essential aspect in human well-being.

Content marketing and the meaningful engagement of customers online is her passion – Lydia Nicoll. After working in PR, advocacy, and with startups in the US, her home country, she returned to the Oresund region last autumn. She had previously lived here briefly in 2014, first coming from China where she worked in education. Through her marketing agency Natively, she is taking on the Swedish market. At Natively, Lydia and her partners focus on inbound methodology as opposed to traditional marketing methods. Öresundstartups met her recently for a talk about her experiences as an expat in Sweden, differences between the start-up communities in the Öresund region and the US, and what personal and business tips she has for entrepreneurs interested in start-ups.

Getting into the start-up scene in a foreign country

Lydia Nicoll sees both the US and Sweden as friendly environments to start new businesses in. The mentality among new entrepreneurs, who might have researched on how to start an llc in Texas, and start-ups in the greater Copenhagen area is characterized by innovation and drive. The community spirit is strong as well. Her concern in the beginning about contacting and pitching her business to new clients as an expat vanished soon after she attended networking events and visited co-working spaces such as Mindpark in Helsingborg or MINC in Malmö:

“The big challenge was I didn’t quite know how to approach new clients. However, I quickly found out that networking at co-working spaces and events is great here. People are extremely helpful, introducing me to other people right away if they couldn’t help me further, so I got contract work quite quickly. It is amazing how fast it happened once I started talking to people”

She recommends researching opportunities available for internationals who are looking for guidance and help with the bureaucratic process of starting a business in the region. For example, the Swedish governmental agency Almi offers free services for foreign or newly arrived entrepreneurs in Sweden:

“There are a lot of resources available for starting a business, especially for foreigners. Together with an adviser at Almi I filled in the paperwork for my company in Sweden in one day, right away at our first meeting. Don’t psych yourself out right away by fearing the paperwork and the processes. It isn’t actually as complicated as you may think!”

As a female entrepreneur, Lydia Nicoll feels that Sweden and the broader Öresund region are great places for women to push their ideas to the next level, since an open community for women already exists, with regular opportunities to network and exchange experiences in person.

“The start-up scene in the US can often feel a bit intimidating and more like a Boy’s Club. This can apply to Sweden too, since most of the time new businesses are in tech, an industry dominated by men. However, I feel that there are more initiatives here to help women break into entrepreneurship and technology. There are more opportunities to meet and connect with women who are interested in this lifestyle.”

Tips for start-ups from a business perspective

As an expert in content marketing, Lydia says that a common mistake start-ups make in the early stages is that they don’t have established guidelines for their brand and mission. It is crucial for businesses to document guiding values, “characteristics” of the business, and future target audiences, as it helps showcase the company’s overall strategy. It helps consumers know what values the business stands by, functioning not only as a marketing tool but as a way to hone in on the development of the product or service. Furthermore, new entrepreneurs often want to do everything on their own, which doesn’t always yield the best results. Reaching out for help and finding a mentor along the way gives you an opportunity to learn from the mistakes as well as the successes of others:

“For me, it laid the groundwork for what is possible for my business as it gives inspiration and reinforcement. If you are the smartest person in the room then you are in the wrong room”

On May 17th from 12.15 – 12.45 PM Lydia Nicoll will hold a Lunch Talk/ Workshop at Mindpark, Helsingborg about content marketing and creating a buyer persona in order to reach your target audience.

Monsenso, a technology firm developing mobile health solutions for mental health based in Copenhagen, announces their partnership with Gen Re, one of the leading companies worldwide in the field of reinsurance.

The partnership aims to grant the insurance sector access to Monsenso’s product mHealth Solution, which is an assisting tool in the prevention, early intervention and treatment of mental illnesses. Thomas Lethenborg, CEO at Monsenso, emphasizes the importance of partnerships for the company:

“Monsenso is looking to build sustainable, long-term partnerships, with the ultimate goal of delivering better care, to more people, at a lower cost”

The technology of health improves patient-engagement, increasing an individual’s desire to play a more active role in their treatment. It enables patients to self-monitor their lifestyle and their symptoms, helping them recover faster from mental illness. Currently it is being used in a clinical capacity in the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Australia to support the treatment of a wide range of mental and behavioral disorders.

However, do you want to see how functional medicine can help you? Have a peak at these functional medicine packages here for some simple yet effective steps and you will see a real positive impact on your health for the long term.

Joint forces for better solutions to treat mental illness

Monsenso and Gen Re will work jointly on facilitating insurance companies, like medicare insurance online, to offer an enhanced service to their customers: By offering the solution, insurers can actively support their customers return to work more quickly, and avoid becoming ill again, an advantage for both, insurers and customers.

“The objective of this partnership is to promote the use of mHealth technology among insurance companies. With this technology, their customers can get better faster by receiving better mental health care, while reducing costs at the same time”, says Thomas Lethenborg.

Having the desire to deliver the best innovative new technology solutions to customers, Gen Re bring their extensive insurance industry knowledge to the partnership, as Jules Constantinou, Regional Manager for Gen Re Life/Health in the UK and Ireland, points out:

“It is important that the life insurance industry embrace new technologies and new processes in order to remain relevant in the lives of customers going forward. Clinical medicine is also evolving and we are very pleased to announce this partnership with Monsenso, which should improve outcomes for insurance claimants who are battling mental illness”
