In the diverse landscape of co-working spaces in Copenhagen, Rainmaking Loft stands out as an interesting addition. After its opening in the beginning of 2015, the Loft has attracted more than 60 startups. This amounts to 320 entrepreneurs who call Rainmaking Loft their home. Rainmaking Loft is therefore effectively the biggest co-working space in Copenhagen.

The Loft is idyllically located on Holmen, an area previously reserved for the Danish navy. The building itself was established in 1888 and served to dress the new recruits for service. After a substantial renovation such as replacing the flooring with ceramic tiles, the old building has now been transformed into a modern and stylish co-working space.

Cooperation across borders

Rainmaking Loft in Copenhagen has by no means sprung out of nothing. The co-working space is rooted in the startup factory Rainmaking and Copenhagen is only the third capital to get a Rainmaking Loft. Rainmaking itself was started in Denmark, but the first co-working space was established in London and thereafter Berlin.
I had the pleasure of meeting with Johan Vardrup, the Head of Communication at Rainmaking Loft. In the interview, Johan shed light on Rainmaking Loft’s role in the Danish Startup environment.

“There is no doubt that we could see a momentum for co-working spaces in Copenhagen. We have been a bit behind compared to Berlin, London and also Stockholm, but the timing seemed right,” says Johan Vardrup.

Many of the people behind Rainmaking are originally from Copenhagen. Johan notes that the return to Denmark in some respects can be seen as a “return to the roots” for the founder group. London and Berlin have served to prove the concept and returning to Copenhagen was a natural decision to get closer to families.

In addition to the 3000 m2 of office space on Holmen, which may soon require the services of companies like Ottawa Foundation Repair, the residents have free access to the Rainmaking Lofts in both London and Berlin. This is one of the ways Rainmaking Loft tries to build bridges between the three cities and promote the startup scene in Copenhagen.

Residents

Rainmaking Loft has, since their opening, been able to attract some very prominent names. The roster currently includes startups such as Lunar Way, Labster and Swiftcourt. Martin Bjergegaard, who is one of the founders behind Rainmaking, also uses the building to develop his startup Frokost.dk.

With groups such as Startup Bootcamp Mobile and Business Angel Copenhagen, it is not only tech startups who uses the house. A broad specter of agents around the tech startups are also seated in the building.
By bringing startups, business angels, and event planners under one roof, they achieve a busy environment where people can learn from each other. The team puts a big emphasis on culture in the co-working space.

Creating an open culture

To get a desk in the building, a startup has to fit into certain criteria. The startup should be scalable beyond the Danish market, have tech in the DNA and the team should consist of between 1 and 12 members who, last but not least, have to be nice people.

“The other thing is, of course, the person. Is this someone I want to drink a beer with? If I would hang out with this person, then so would others. You have to use your gut feeling during that first meeting. But we strive to be an open community, rather than a selective one,” says Johan Vardrup

It is through genuine curiosity and open communication that the most productive relationships are formed. Neutral spaces such as the lobby and the kitchens are important because they are spaces where people can meet outside the boundaries of their endeavors. Every piece of furniture was custom made and delivered to us by Alan Desk, located in Los Angeles, California. They offer clean designs and modern office furniture los angeles that we envisioned for the rainmaking loft.

“If you pursue your startup alone, you can get stuck. It makes a difference to be close to fellow entrepreneurs who care about what you’re working on and say “keep me posted”. People at Rainmaking Loft are accountable to each other in a constructive way,” says Johan Vardrup.

Bringing the right people together

To improve the global visibility of Danish entrepreneurs, Rainmaking Loft hosts Danish Startup Council. The mission of the council is to create valuable connections between Danish entrepreneurs and foreign investors.

The size of Rainmaking Loft makes it a natural venue for events. As part of the effort to create contacts between business angel and entrepreneurs, the house hosts both Rainmaking Connect and has been the venue for multiple AngelNext. The event Rainmaking Heroes was held in October, where Mathias Dalgaard, the CEO of GoMore, was invited for a talk about the ups and downs of creating a successful startup.

New events are continually added to the roster, with the Friday bar Tech & Tonic starting this February. As a new incentive, Rainmaking Loft has also started cooperation with the Danish insurance company Tryg.

“Instead of just having passive sponsorships, we work with partners from industries such as banking and insurance. Our starting point is what they already deliver well. Then we ask: How do we customize your services to fit the daily needs of entrepreneurs because we know the challenges they face,” says Johan Vardrup.

The benefits of scale

It is clear that Rainmaking Loft has a lot of muscles to work with. The size makes it possible for the house to facilitate a large array of events and workshops. Rainmaking Loft is therefore not just office space, but it represents a frame for the growing startup scene in Copenhagen.

“At the core of things, the biggest differentiator for us is to have the nicest and most talented entrepreneurs out there. Everything else is just packaging,” says Johan Vardrup.

With culture and community in the forefront the co-working space also tries to create quite a specific atmosphere for the residents to work in If you want to add some green colors to your commercial building you should get in touch with a professional landscape designer who can lend you a hand. It is therefore not only the size that gives the place its character. The co-working space uses these extra resources to offer their residents a bit more than just a desk.

The Copenhagen-based startup, Labster, recently received an investment of DKK 65 million ($10 million). The main portion of the capital injection came from the British VC Balderton Capital. However, other investors such as the Nordic VC Northzone and David Helgason, Founder and Board Member of Unity, have also contributed to the investment.

Labster has created an educational tool which allows students to interact with virtual laboratories. Labster enables students to do research and perform experiments in realistic settings. By including Labster in their educational program, institutions avoiding the dangers and costs of actual research facilities. The company was founded in 2012 by Mads Tvillinggaard Bonde and Michael Bodekær Jensen.

“In recent years, we have spent a lot of money on insurance and development but we are no ready to bring the tool to the people. The money will, therefore, primarily be invested in sales and marketing,” Says Mads Bonde in an interview with Computerworld.

Mads Bonde has a background in research and holds a Ph.D. in Biotechnology. It was after arriving at Harvard University in the USA and experiencing the same educational challenges that Danish universities are dealing with that Mads realized that there was room for improvement.

Picking the right investors

Labster has received wide acclaim for their virtual laboratories and when looking for funding they found themselves able to pick between different prospects.

“The interest was quite simply enormous and we were able to pick between five different proposals from renowned investors. We chose the investors with whom we saw the best conditions for collaboration and the investors best suited to help us reach the next stage,” says Mads.

One of the investors, David Helgason, has acted as an advisor for Labster through close to two years.

David Helgason has vast experience from Unity, which he helped develop into an enormous company of over 1.000 employees. This is, of cause, something that we would like to learn from,” says Mad

Today, Labster is in collaboration with some of the most renowned universities in the world to improve the educational level in natural science. The tool is sold to educational institutions all over the world who pays through yearly subscriptions.

At the end of 2016, the Swedish startup, Näraffär, was acquired by Wheelys, an alumn from both VentureLab in Lund and Ycombinator. Näraffär is the world’s first system for staffless stores and it is today one of the critical components in Wheelys new autonomous, staffless and mobile store.

The project launched June 13 under the name The Moby Mart, and the convenience store can now be seen on the streets of Shanghai. Robert Ilijason, the Swedish entrepreneur behind Näraffär, will stay on as a technical advisor on the project.

I’ve been a part of the project with Wheelys all throughout development, but many people has been involved. The decision to make the concept mobile was self-evident as it ties into wheelys core business model,” says Ilijason in an interview with Ehandel.se

Customers gain access to the store via an app and the same app is used for payment. The store is driving solely on solar power and it is able to refill itself during the night.

“When the rules and regulations are in order, it will be possible for our self-driving stores to be in one city one day and in another the next day, During the night, it drives by itself and fills up with goods. Customers can even order products which can’t be found in the usual assortment, so that they will be delivered the next day,” says Ilijason.

The shop costs under $100.000 to produce which is only a fraction of the production cost of a traditional store. Robert sees the shop as a taste of what is to come in the area of retail. Next step will be to develop a fleet of autonomous stores and introduce them to Lapland.

Wheelys is an international provider of mobile stores. Their main product is an all-in-one café on a bike, ready with all a retailer needs to start a business. They currently have over 900 mobile cafés in 73 countries.

On the 10th of May, Omnio won the SEED Discovery Day taking home the DKK 500.000 (Euro 67.000) investment. The Copenhagen-based startup will use the momentum to close their first round of funding and find new talent to impact the industrial Internet of Things.

“In just the few days since the competition we have been in contact with a number of both Danish and international VCs and angels. They really like the vision of what Omnio will mean as an infrastructure component for the industrial Internet of Things and they see that we have traction,” says Mikkel Sørensen, CEO of Omnio.

Omnio has developed a SaaS product which gives you plug’n’play device integration for industrial devices. Their platform connects with all devices and IoT platforms and works as a universal translator for industrial device communication.

The event was arranged by SEED Capital and took place at DTU Skylab. Each finalist had to do a 5-minute pitch afterward answering a string of critical and complex questions from the jury. The jury was comprised of several prominent figures such as Jesper Buch, Ulla Brockenhuus-Schack, Tine Thygesen, and Henrik Teisbæk.

Standing out from the crowd

As part of their preparation, Omnio has participated in the pitch training day which was held one week prior to the final competition. At the training day, each startup got the chance to get feedback and improve their pitches.

“It was a great experience for us to participate in the Discovery Day. We especially found the pitch preparation with Tine Thygesen from Founder’s House valuable. She really helped us fine tune our message,” says Mikkel Thøgersen, CFO of Omnio.

In the final, Omnio faced off against Pre.do, Sawy, HiveOnline, JustBring, Penstable, FestivALL, TheCode, OBI+, and BuzzMe.

Copenhagen For The Win or CPHFTW was established in 2013 when three prominent entrepreneurs saw the need for a better and more connected startup community. The three founders, Thomas Madsen-Mygdal, Michael Reibel Boesen, and Sebastian Schwemer all shared a discontent with how startups were interacting in Copenhagen.

“We wasn’t satisfied with the situation as it was at the time. We were convinced that Copenhagen could do better than a lot of other big cities,” says Thomas Madsen-Mygdal in an interview with Børsen.

Tuesday the 17th of December the three founders met with 62 other like-minded entrepreneurs to discuss the future of the ecosystem. The location was Digterkroen in central Copenhagen which was owned by Martin von Haller Grønbæk, another prominent figure in the Danish startup community. All participants were frustrated about how hard it was for entrepreneurs to share resources and knowledge.

All participants were frustrated about how hard it was for entrepreneurs to share resources and knowledge. The organization is made by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs and it remains independent from any political system and from bigger companies.

“New start-ups didn’t know where to go to gain a network or to find talented employees. We saw the situation as a burning platform and it wouldn’t help to wait around for something to happen. So we decided to do it ourselves,” says Thomas Madsen-Mygdal

A Gathering Point for Entrepreneurs

It was here that the foundation for CPHFTW was established and it was here it got its peculiar name. The first initiative from the organization was the Townhall event which is currently nearing its 11th edition. The event is meant as a gathering point where everyone from the community can meet, network and share experiences. It has acquired its own aesthetics often held in the minimalistic setting of abandoned storage facilities.

Today the 130 member companies range from big established companies such as Zendesk to small companies of only a few people. The aim is to reach 200 members before the end of 2017. Apart from the Townhall events, which are supported by the Danish Business Authority, all expenses of CPHFTW are funded by its members.

“Governments around the world are spending money to futher local entrepreneurship, but we have done it as a private and communial initiative. We do it wit transparancy and in a community that everyone can be a part of. It is this energy that we will have to redefine and it will be the next project of CPHFTW,” says Thomas Madsen-Mygdal

The Danish startup Boatflex recently received an impressive investment of DKK 5 million ($720.000) from SEED Capital. Boatflex is a peer-to-peer platform for fully insured boat rentals between trusted and passionate sailors. They enable boat owners to bring down costs through renting or even just for accommodation.

“Most private boats are only used 2% of the time and it is definitely not cheap to own a boat. We think it would be ideal to provide boat owners with the opportunity to get some of their expenses covered, while we let people without a boat enjoy some time on the water,” says Jakob Bojesen, founder and CEO of Boatflex.

The startup was founded in 2014 by Jakob Bojesen and Jonas Hoegh-Christensen. Since then, Boatflex has quickly become the leading platform for private boat sharing in Northern Europe. In 2016 Boatflex had 200.000 unique visits and the team has attracted prominent names such as Mik Thobo-Carlsen, founder of Tattoodo, and the Olympic medalist Jonas Høgh-Christensen.

Riding the wave of sharing economy

Through their Peer-to-Peer platform, Boatflex hopes to bring the joy of sailing to a younger generation. When costs are covered through rental, buying a boat suddenly becomes an option for a much larger segment. The potential is big with already 1400 rental boats and 4000 users registered on the platform.

“Sharing economy platforms are on the rise and Boatflex is “riding the wave”. They serve a gigantic market with only a few competitive platforms. They have the potential to become a category winner within their market. The founding team at Boatflex has shown great engagement and execution skills from the very beginning,” says Alexander Viterbo-Horten, Investment Manager at SEED Capital.

SEED Capital is Denmark’s largest venture capital fund within the seed segment. They currently manage DKK 2.3 billion ($360 million) and they have made highly successful investments in Trustpilot, Vivino, Lunar Way, Acarix, Templafy, and Coinify.

With an ever increasing number of co-working spaces in Copenhagen, finding the right office community to suit your startup can be a challenge. Here is a list of four prominent spaces in Copenhagen each offering a unique take on entrepreneurial co-working.

DARE2mansion

The mansion was conceived in 2008 when founders Laila Pawlak and Kris Østergaard bought an abandoned auto repair shop in the middle of Østerbro. Refurbishing the old and run down interior into a fully functioning co-working space has been no small feat but the results are staggering.

More than 3,000 hours of volunteer work has gone into the project resulting in a truly inspiring entrepreneurial setting. The facilities have six main rooms, each with its own distinctive feel and personality. The most popular of these rooms is the Festival, named after the refurbished art installation making up the back wall of the room. The Festival can accommodate 50 people and is ideal for company workshops and intimate speaker events.

At the heart of the Mansion, you’ll find the Café. Equipped with full bar service, cafe seating, a DJ booth, an elevated stage and surround sound the cafe is a gathering place for all the mansion’s residents. It can accommodate 150 people and it is ideal for parties and bigger events.

Co-working

DARE2mansion is meticulously designed to give its residents a feeling of homeliness and community. Their model is a mixture between co-working and incubation not only offering office space but also access to investors, creative outlets, workshops, and learning experiences. They also have professional office space that can be occupied. You can see the whole view of the office by visiting this website at https://www.frippwarehousing.com/.

Seats aren’t restricted to startups from any specific industries or of any size. On the contrary, the mansion values diversity and the only common denominator of the residents is their willingness to create a positive impact. The mansioners are a diverse bunch and it is this diversity of missions and attitudes that give the co-working space its edge.

DARE2mansion both offers flex spaces for the smaller and more fluent entrepreneurs and fixed offices for established startups teams.

Founders House

Founders House was established in 2011 as the first tech co-working space in Copenhagen. Since then, Founders House has grown at an incredible rate. In 2014 they allocated to their current location in Islands Brygge. While resettling in their new facilities Founders House simultaneously co-founded Startup Village in collaboration with neighboring growth startups. Startup Village consists of 14,000 m2 and It houses more than 40 startups and around 500 people.

Founders House value ambition and scalability. Their residents are a select group of prominent and talented entrepreneurs. They highly emphasize knowledge sharing and community and they are actively creating an environment where people can draw on each other’s energy and experience.

Recently joining forces with the Norwegian startup community MESH, Founders House is now offering a truly flexible office service in the Nordics. After merging with MESH, Founders House resides of 6,600 m2 of office space and 13,000 m2 if you count in Startup Village.

“Size matters, because the financial muscles enable us to offer a more competitive product to our member. It means we can get better deals with savings we can pass on, invest in closed offices, as well as a service divisions, more community space and activities,” says Tine Thygesen, Co-founder, and CEO of Founders House.

Co-working

Founders House recently added the option of getting a flex membership for a lower overhead than a fixed seat. The price of a flex membership is DKK 1950 per month ($275 per month). Residents can move freely between the office space in Copenhagen and the MESH facilities in Oslo.

They focus on die-hard tech startups with the ambition to scale beyond the Danish border. Their location in the middle of Startup Village provides a unique communal setting with innovation at the forefront.

Republikken

Republikken is centrally located on Vesterbrogade 26, only three-minute walk away from Copenhagen Central Station. The co-working space was established in 2005 with a vision of creating an informal and dynamic community where everyone is their own boss.

The co-working space is 1000 m2 in size divided into two large rooms. They also have 23 private offices which can facilitate small companies with teams consisting of up to 8 people. Republikken is an apt location for both open and private events. They arrange a broad array of courses, lectures, and workshops.

The focus of Republikken is self-employed people working on projects within a broad array of industries. Here, both knowledge and passion are shared and cross professionalism, co-creation, and mutual inspiration is encouraged.

Co-working

A flex desk costs DKK 1.875 per month ($265 per month) while a Fixed desk goes for DKK 3090 per month ($440 per month). For DKK 850 per month ($120 per month), you get a Connect membership which gives you access to Republikken’s open office during opening hours.

If you just want to visit and get inspired by the entrepreneurial setting, then buy a workpass. You pay 40 DKK ($5,5) for the first hour and from there on DKK 15 per hour ($2 per hour). The open space is open Monday to Friday between 08:00 – 17:00.

If you and your team wish to have your own private space, you can get one of Republikken’s 23 offices. An office costs DKK 4,500 per month ($640 per month).

Rainmaking Loft

At the beginning of 2015, Rainmaking opened the doors to its massive co-working space in Copenhagen. Already having set up two co-working spaces in London and Berlin, the Loft in Copenhagen can be seen as a return to the roots for Rainmaking as an organization.

The space is beautifully located in a renovated navy facility by the harbor on Holmen. The building itself was built in 1888 and provides over 3000 m2. Each of the Loft’s four floors is decorated with glass facades and simplistic designer furniture giving an impression of openness and professionalism. Every floor is divided into bigger company rooms, smaller team offices and one big lounge area in the middle.

More than 300 entrepreneurs from over 50 different companies currently call Rainmaking Loft their home. Besides having access to the office space on Holmen, residents of the Loft also have free access to work from both sister Lofts in London and Berlin.

Co-working

The residents of Rainmaking Loft consist of a mixture of prominent tech startups and Rainmaking’s own ventures. To get a seat a Rainmaking Loft, a startup must be scalable beyond the Danish market and have tech as an integral part of its DNA.

The Loft offers both the opportunity for a flex desk and a fixed office for bigger teams. With a flex seat, you will have access to an open office space on the ground floor in the company of inspiring and ambitious entrepreneurs. Both residencies include unlimited use of meeting rooms, lounge areas, fast internet and a big event room.

Utilising a virtual office in Glasgow for a postal address can be a smart and efficient solution. It not only secures your home address but also boosts your business’s image. For this, Glasgow Virtual Offices offers a practical solution, allowing you to separate your home and work lives efficiently. Here is a list of four prominent spaces in Copenhagen each offering a unique take on entrepreneurial co-working.
