We have multiplied the number of entrepreneurs in Christiansborg with a very high number of times tonight! We might be about 7 that have actually started their own business in the Danish parliament.

Those were the words from Uffe Elbæk, a newly independent politician, who has been monumental in helping getting Startup Weekend Borgen inside Christiansborg and in this way for 54 hours reclaimed the Danish parliament back to the people.

“In many ways it’s a first for many of us.” Uffe continued

And he couldn’t be more right. It’s the first time that an event like this is held in the Danish parliament and for many of the participants it’s their first get-your-hands-dirty-with-blood-sweat-tears-and-coffee-introduction to entrepreneurship.

But what’s so special about that? Isn’t Startup Wekeends always full of first-timers? Indeed yes, but this time the organizing team behind has made a special effort in introducing the Startup Weekend event concept to a part of the population who rarely is subjected to entrepreneurship and the way entrepreneurship creates innovation. This Startup Weekend also introduced a daring concept, where one team got a special assingment using the following method:

Put a bunch of politicans together in a 1 hours panel plus one experienced investor/entrepreneur in the form of Thomas Madsen-Mygdal.

Have them debate hot and tough challenges in the Danish society today.

Have them pick two of these challenges

Hand those challenge over to a carefully selected dream team with the purpose of solving one of the 54 hours weekend.

This means that whereas the other participants have a well defined idea about what they were going to work on the dream team had no idea about what they were going work on. This takes a team that doesn’t have T-shaped skill-set, but more like a square-shaped skill-set. I myself was involved in picking it’s members, a great challenge. The team ended up consisting of 8 great persons: Pernille Ravn, Adrian Young-San Roessler, Neil Murray, Kræn Hansen, Daniel Mierzwinski, Stephane Chong, Simon Stubben and Øivind Slatto. Following a heated debate between the politicians – almost to the point of a fistfight – two challenges were picked: “Free the workers” and an oldie-but-goodie “put entrepreneurship back in the schools”. The team picked “Free the workers” – about how to make more corporate workers take the jump into intra/entrepreneurship. The solution they came up with was called Passioneur – which uses peoples passion to match people them together in order to find each-others and start businesses together. They really showed the importance of a good team – in about 24 hours they did everything from building the product, brand it, get public attention, get customers and get testimonials from prominent people. They did everything that’s required of you to do when building a startup. A really successful and highly skillful execution.

The other teams consisted of a great mixture of interested participants. Students, corporate employees and quite a few members of the DJØF organisation (a union association for economists and lawyers). There was also a greater then usual diversity in ages: all from 20 years to 45 years and older where part of the teams.
These teams where free to create whatever they wanted, just as in normal Startup Weekends. However, one of the prizes was focused on creating benefits to society.

The teams and the projects

14 teams were part of the Startup Weeekend in total:

Passioneur [made by the dream team]: Find others and start a company

Livewalk: Telemediators for the elderly and sick

OddFood: Eliminate food waste and make delicious juice

Lommepengekortet: Teach kids about money and budgeting using their own debit card and a web-based learning platform

Flexiwalk: The transformer wheelchair – from wheelchair to walker in a second

Folkestemningen: A democracy platform to pick and vote for legislative proposals

Youberu: Personal tracking of marathon runners

De grønne piloter: A new initiative to offer recreative activites with pickup service for kids.

Det virtuelle lærerværelse: A knowledgesharing platform for teachers

The polisher: An all-in-one nail polishing box

Meetio: Kill bad meetings

Status DK: Real time data display of how the state of Denmark is

Kickstream: Live-streaming platform for extreme sports

Diversify: Connect expats in Denmark with danes the data driven way

What should probably be apparent by now is that these solutions are quite different from what can usually be seen at Startup Weekends (at least the ones this author have been a part of). First of all: Many were very focused on the Danish market. Secondly, many of them deal with social challenges; Passioneur, Livewalk, Flexiwalk, Lommepengekortet, Folkestemningen, De grønne piloter, Det virtuelle lærerværelse, Status DK and Diversify. I would say that only Kickstream, Meetio and The Polisher could definitely be found at other Startup Weekends as well.

During the pitches it became clear that for many of the presenters this was one of the first times they had ever pitched a product for a large audience. And in terms of pitch quality a few teams immediately stood out: Passioneur, Meetio, Flexiwalk and Kickstream. Unfortunately, in the short pitching time it was hard to judge how much work the teams have put into it. For instance it wasn’t very clear how much work the Passioneur team had put in achieving what they achieved. It was probably similar for most of the teams.

The Jury and the Winners

The jury was also an odd crowd with only one usual suspect: Tine Thygesen, CEO and co-founder of Everplaces plus co-founder of Founders House. The rest was from big corporate entities:

Mads Henriksen, CFO in Riis Detail A/S and board member of DJØF

Jørn Bo Jacobsen, Country manager for SAP Danmark

Betina Hagerup, CEO of The Danish Business Authority

Nikolai Lubanski, CEO for Copenhagen Capacity’s talent department

This in itself was interesting and made it a challenge for some of the more experienced teams because they were clearly used to a different mindset in the jury.

The jury was supposed to match the teams to three prizes:

Biggest business potential

Biggest use to the society

Best tech startup

The biggest business potential prize went to Flexiwalk. The primary reason that they managed to build a prototype of the wheelchair only since saturday night and the fact that they already sold to 3 customers.

The biggest use to the society prize went to Lommepengekortet. Very well deserved as it obviously tackled a big issue in the danish society (10% of young people are in the RKI) in a creative way.

The best tech startup prize went to Meetio, which despite the fact that they didn’t spend any time validating customers had a technological very impressive solution. The team was clearly very skilled and had a nice complementary skillset.

Politicians and entrepreneurship

One important goal of the Startup Weekend Borgen was to capture the attention of the politicians. Whether this has succeeded remains to be seen. Uffe Elbæk certainly seems to represent a promising way in, as he seemed very dedicated to the purpose. This Startup Weekend Borgen definitely succeeded in reclaiming the Danish parliament as a place for the people.

This is an event report by Michael Reibel Boesen, who besides being founder and CTO at the very interesting startup Biomicore was also involved in organising the Betapitch event.

“Copenhagen is the most exciting startup city in the Nordics!”

Those were the words blurted out with passion from Martin Hauge, General Partner at Creandum during the White Bull panel session facilitated by Farley Duvall and Martin von Haller Grønbæk at Betapitch Copenhagen last night. What followed was an intense debate about how to create the next billion $/€ company in Copenhagen. Martin von Haller Grønbæk, Partner at Bird&Bird led on with asking about if tax was an inhibitor or could be a catalyst to get more of these companies. The panelists disagreed – almost to the point of starting a fistfight – whether our high taxes is indeed a problem or not. I believe all could agree that lower taxes will be beneficial but whether or not more billion $/€ companies will come by doing so remained highly debated.

Danger! Highly flammable!

Just about 90 people showed up for the combined Betapitch and White Bull event. The participants came from all parts of the entrepreneurial stack: Wanna-be-preneurs, entrepreneurs, serial entrepreneurs, business angels, investors etc. It was an explosive and highly flammable mix of most of the startup scene in Denmark as well as the southern part of Sweden. Despite the buzzing, energized and hot (in multiple ways) atmosphere with multiple sparks flying around it was amazing that the whole of Republikken didn’t burn down to the ground. A key to why this didn’t happen was the continuous stream of beer, wine and food generously sponsored by Bird&Bird which added a certain level of humidity to the atmosphere. Suffice to say, we wouldn’t be shocked if several new knots were tied at the event.

Wat’a-bike, boligportalen on steroids and just print your own damn house!

The ten teams that made it through were these:

Swipes: Swipe away procrastination

KOMBO Building Systems: 3D print your own house

iRezQ: Fast alert if you’re in an accident

Bikway: Bike-paths for everyone and everywhere

Wat’a-bike: Water+bike=Wat’a-bike

Tasspass: Crowdsource a dog-sitter

Sociotransit: Crowdsource a courier around the world

BillyTracker: Track your kid using a GPS

Hiveeo: Boligportalen on steroids using social networks

Wilding: A recording room in a room

The Pitches

On the paper it looked easy: Clearly all 10 ideas were awesome, but on the paper it would appear that some of them had greater potential, some teams looked nicer and some just seem to make more sense. But oh boy, were we wrong about that! Once the pitching war started it spared no one. First up, Swipes – amazing growth for an app that has only lived for a week in a very crowded space. Second up Wilding – an ambitious project that aims to create room-in-a-room for which to connect with loved ones, create amazing green-screen videos etc. Third, Bikway – a bike-path to be easily installed everywhere in order to move the Copenhagen bike experience to towns less fortunate. Fourth up iRezQ – a great team with an app that detects accidents alerts the authorities and nearby motorists. Fifth BillyTracker – track your kid using an easy-to-use app and a small GPS sensor. Sixth up Hiveeo – as Casper Overgaard tweeted “Boligportalen.dk on steroids”. Sean the founder came extremely well prepared with multiple backup slides and jokes – he made jury-members laugh so hard they seemed to forget their questions. Interesting strategy… Seventh Sociotransit – a website which let’s you crowdsource a courier from around the world to pickup forgotten cellphones, Chardonnay’s etc. Eighth up Jakob Bue – with an amazing tale of how and why we should use more waterbikes in cities with canals. The design he proposed is way better than what exists in the market today. Ninth – Tasspass – a website that crowdsources dogsitters tailored to the individual dogs needs. Finally, Kombo – a software tool that makes lives simpler for architects and will basically allow you to 3D print your own house.

The fight was on! Who would win the Trophy? After almost 40 minutes the jury emerged from the meeting room in a fog of white smoke. Ready to announce the winners.

Bikway and Swipes took it all!

The 2nd place (which also qualifies for a trip to compete in Betapitch Global) was Swipes by Kasper Tornøe and Yana Vlatchkova – see you guys in Berlin!

But the 1st place went to Bikway by Andreas Schuster, Dovydas Rusciauskas, Eimantas Liudvinovicious and Simon Hansen! The jury found that the Bikway team had found a way to export something, which truly reflect Copenhagen and had done so in a very promising and believable way.

Also an announcement: RepublikkenTech!

A small but important announcement was also made during Betapitch Copenhagen. Republikken which hosted the event – currently a co-working space, which is known for it’s focus on architects and designers have decided to take a firm step towards tech startups. At Betapitch Morten Sylvest Nøhr announced that they will blow the roof off the old Republikken and open the 4th floor of the building to house tech startups: So far titled RepublikkenTech. They’re doing so in collaboration with Michael Reibel Boesen, Sebastian Schwemer and Andreas Cleve Lohmann who are working on a project to empower the Copenhagen Tech Startup ecosystem so far named CphQ. If you’re interested in being a part of the new Tech Startup epicenter of Copenhagen, be the first to get an office etc. then sign-up for more information here: http://republikkenmeetstech.launchrock.com. Also like the Facebook page and follow the Twitter profile.

An amazing night in the spirit of innovation and ideas

All in all it was an amazing night with lightning talks by the likes of Tommy Ahlers and Thomas Madsen-Mygdal followed by the heated discussion of the White Bull panel before finally, going into the Betapitch competition, which featured teams that really showed how to step up to the challenge of pitching ideas. We want to thank all our sponsors and partners as well as the jury members: Thomas Madsen-Mygdal, Madeleine Gummer von Mohl, Martin Ferro-Thomsen, Henriette Weber and Anette Nørgaard! Thanks to all for making it an awesome night!
