REEN, Norway’s leading provider of digital solutions for the waste industry, has acquired Lund-based waste management startup Bintel. Together, they are forming the strongest Nordic platform for smart waste management, uniting REEN’s logistics and sensor technology with Bintel’s AI-powered analytics.

The combination establishes the strongest Nordic platform for smart waste management, with a shared mission to accelerate efficiency, sustainability, and digital innovation across the waste value chain.

The acquisition strengthens REEN’s footprint in Sweden, a key growth market, and brings together complementary technologies and customer portfolios.

“Joining forces with REEN is a defining step for both companies. Together, we can scale faster, serve customers better, and lead the transformation of how cities and companies manage resources.”

The winners of the prestigious Nordic PropTech Awards 2025 were announced yesterday in Copenhagen, marking another milestone in celebrating the cutting-edge innovations shaping the future of real estate and the built environment. From a strong field of finalists, Finland dominated this year’s competition, securing victories in three of the six award categories.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Nordic PropTech Awards have recognised the most promising and forward-thinking startups and scaleups within the proptech industry. The awards not only highlight groundbreaking solutions but also foster collaboration across the region, strengthening the shared vision of a smarter, more sustainable built environment. The award is given to Nordic-based startups with solutions that contribute to the digital and green transformation across the real estate sector – a transformation that is critically necessary to meet both current and future challenges for people, the built environment, and our planet.

An expert jury of more than 50 industry professionals from across the Nordic region carefully selected the winners from a pool of over 100 competitors. These six companies have demonstrated outstanding innovation in their respective categories: Property Management, Real Estate Fintech, Energy, ConTech, Sustainable & Healthy Buildings, and Mobility & Sustainable Cities.

We recently wrote about Bintel’s latest invest round. Now they are in the news again. Their innovation project “Smart waste bins” has successfully achieved its goals, marking a new era for waste management. The 18-month pilot project was a collaboration between SSAM, Bintel and Prezero, funded by the EU program UIA within the framework of Växjö municipality’s innovation project Diaccess.

“The results from the project open up new opportunities to develop the collection from the environmental houses when, from the next turn of the year, the municipalities will also be responsible for recycling materials from all households. With Bintel’s technology, we get new tools to continue our journey up the waste ladder by, together with our customers, increasing recycling and reducing combustible residual waste,”

summarizes Florim Albborn, CEO of SSAM.

The project involved connecting 1,400 waste bins in the environmental rooms of multi-family houses and businesses in Växjö through Wexnet’s LORA network. The waste bins were fitted with Bintel level sensors to collect data. The project’s goals were to optimize existing routes by skipping emptying where possible, making structural changes in the environmental rooms, and testing demand-controlled emptying based on data from each environmental room. The results showed that the AI technology used in the project works effectively in real operations, and the need for collection decreased more than expected, leading to increased efficiency and reduced waste. The success of the project has been attributed to collaboration among stakeholders, with valuable input from drivers at PreZero.

The goal of the project is to improve waste sorting and accelerate the circular transition, ultimately leading to a reduction in the amount of waste sent to incineration. Additionally, the project aligns with the UN’s Agenda 2030 and can help companies achieve their sustainability goals. The project’s success has generated interest from the industry, and the AI technologies scalability bodes well for the future.

Skåne-based impact startup Bintel has successfully closed a new investment round of €1.25 million (SEK 14 million) to expand their smart digital solutions for the waste industry, with investors including Almi Invest Greentech and EIT (European Institute for Innovation and Technology)

“What we’re seeing now is great – our solution has a very clear value proposition and delivers a quick return on investment to our customers. That, together with macro events, means that we are now handling just over a million [SEK] per month in incoming orders. It is great that both existing and new investors believe in us and what we do. We are now moving forward and aim to reach a cash flow positive position by summer and then take the next step in our growth journey”,
says Michael Wictor, CEO at Bintel

One of the biggest costs in waste management is handling residual waste, and Bintel’s solution helps customers achieve better source sorting through data analysis, reducing residual waste and operating costs while promoting environmental sustainability. The company is experiencing a surge in demand due to increased emission rights costs and stricter industry regulations.

The investment from Almi Invest Greentech (one of Bintel’s investors since 2021) and EIT highlights the growing interest and support for sustainable and environmentally responsible practices within the waste industry. Bintel’s innovative technology and commitment to sustainability align with the goals of both investors, making this partnership a strategic move towards a greener future.

The digital waste management startup from Helsingborg called Bintel announced they have raised funding, their first round with institutional investors. The round is a total of € 750.000, from Almi Invest and from private investors Erik Urnes and Philip Abdon.

“We are very pleased to have received Almi Invest as a new investor. With their capital and expertise in the back, we can now take the next step in our development”, says Bintel’s CEO Tom Johansen.

Bintels founders, having come into contact thru a hackathon at Mindpark, developed sensor-based systems and cloud services for on-demand waste management services. The garbage bins are connected with sensors that detect when it is time to empty the bins. In this way the emptying takes place when needed and not according to scheduled fixed times. This results in both economic and environmental benefits, as fewer discharges require fewer trucks.

The company focuses on the customers living in detached houses. The customers can, with Bintel’s smart controls on the garbage bin, themselves indicate when it is time to empty the bin. The information is then sent to Bintel’s server, which can plan which bins need to be emptied. The test project, that was carried out together with the City of Helsingborg, shows that there will be fewer emptying processes and more satisfied customers.

“Bintel is quite right in time with its system, which fits the connected smart cities of the future”, says Ann-Sofie Hörlin, investment manager at Almi Invest, “It is an excellent way to help companies and municipalities reduce their environmental impact. The company is early on with a completely new technology in a global technology shift and we believe that they have good opportunities to succeed.”

Bintel has a number of customers in the Swedish market and the successful test project with Helsingborg’s city has attracted great interest throughout the Nordic region. The company now focuses on reaching municipal cleaning companies as first customers. Bintel plans on spending the newly-acquired money on marketing and sales, with the initial focus on the Nordic region.

When the data is collected from waste bins, Bintel’s machine learning is applied with an aim of optimizing waste collection in a municipality. If you check my blog you will learn how the startup also has cloud solutions that creates smarter routes for waste-collecting transport. As a result, it brings a more cost-efficient service for the customer and saves the environment with reduced CO2-emissions and better sorted waste.
