Startup onomondo started out as Hello World Mobile, a startup aiming to change the mobile world. The three founders announced the name change yesterday, as well as a funding of € 1.2 million.

The funding is from Danish Sealand Capital and the Market Development Fund. The aim is to take the unique mobile routing technology from onomondo to market.

“We are first in the world to crack the code on how to eliminate technical roaming between mobile networks.”

– explains Michael Bak, CEO & Co-Founder of onomondo,

“We are extremely happy to have found the right investor to help us bring the technology global.”

“As private consumers we all know the consequences of roaming when we are vacation abroad. To prevent it from becoming an expensive experience, many people choose to turn their phone off completely. With onomondo’s technology roaming can be eliminated completely with great benefits for the consumer, and with great untapped potential for the operators.”

– says Søren Ammundsen, Investment Manager from Sealand Capital,

onomondo’s solution integrates seamless with current telecom network technology, and the company works with industry players to get the technology to market on a global scale. It makes it possible to offer B2B roaming and routing solutions for telecom operators anywhere in the world – effectively eliminating roaming.

When asked why their technology is sought for by the industry, Michael Bak says:

“We see huge interest from several continents for our solution that helps telecom operators of all sizes combine their networks, cut costs and offer new innovative products for their customers”

Sealand Capital is an investment fund based in Copenhagen. They have invested in a number of companies, amongst other Needit which has developed the popular electronic parking disc ‘ParkOne’. Sealand Capital has a specific focus on Internet of Things (IoT) and has also announced to launch a completely new IoT incubator in the spring of 2015.

“As investors we always look for startups with potential to truly disrupt an existing industry. onomondo, with their unique technology and their dynamic, competent team has exactly this potential.” says Søren Ammundsen

When it comes to the telecom space, Danish companies are used to being at the forefront of innovation. The Copenhagen based technology startup onomondo aims to continue this tradition.

There really is something brewing in Copenhagen! Founders House, an invite only co-working space, has for long been the most known startup palces in Copenhagen. This week it was announced they will move to a new location. But this location will not just be a much larger and grander Founders House – it will also be next to a lot of other prominent startups!

The new location, at Islands Brygge, will thus form a new innovative tech hub – dubbed the Startup Village Copenhagen.

Old warehouses turned into startups heaven

Islands Brygge’s historic warehouses marked by experts you can aslo hire if you click here used to be the headquarters of FDB, who stored and transported products to all of Denmark via direct tracks to Copenhagen Harbor. In recent years, the area has increasingly become the home of tech startups, and now that is accelerated. As of this summer, the area in Njalsgade will be the frame around Copenhagen’s biggest concentration of fast-growing startups, including the estabished startups Vivino, Opbeat, Graduateland and Autobutler, as well as over 15 other both early and later stage startups!

A real hub for startups

Having all these ambitious startups with offices side by side increase knowledge-sharing and in turn speeds up growth of the individual companies. All serious tech startups are welcome, both to take up offices at Njalsgade, now called Startup Village, and to join the many tech events and social stuff arranged so people can network, do business and have fun. Founders House will with it’s move also expand, so talk to them if you are a smaller startup and want to be part of their co-working area.

A grass-roots initiative

The entire idea behind the Startup Village comes from the community itself. In contrast to many other projects, this is not a government sponsored place or initiative, but rater it is the different startups realizing that they could create an area that they would love themselves. This is a similar trend seen elsewhere, with Berlins Factory (also to be opened this summer) being a similar initiative.

With both the established startups being there, and Founders House with its often earlier stage startups as well as smaller startups in their own offices, the Village will be a space for both startups that are just getting going, as well as later stage ones that have raised a successful series A or even a series B investment. The Village will also be a natural place for international startups establishing a Scandinavian presence to be located – something that already is apperent on the list of the initial startups forming the Startup Village!

All in all, a great step for the community to have that much knowledge in one place!

Startups present

The spaces are being put in shape now, and the inaugurations is set for the 29th of August. The following startups have said will be part of the Startup Village CPH when it starts:

Shape

Last week, the Copenhagen based startup Hello World Mobile was picked as ICT winner in Europe’s biggest venture competition; European Venture Contest 2013. The competition jury consists of investors from all over Europe, and more than 800 early stage startups from more than 20 countries participates every year.

Hello World Mobile is a startup still mostly in stealth mode, who has developed a platform technology that virtually combines physical telecom networks across carriers and country borders, ultimately creating one single international tele network. The platform will be available to virtual telco operators who in future can become international from one single point of entry – an unthinkable product in todays telecom market.

“We are extremely proud to be able to get this kind of validation of the potential of our technology” says Michael Bak, CEO at Hello World Mobile

“It just shows, that even if our platform has not yet been launched, we have substantial market validation in the partners that we have been able to work with so far.”

Hello World Mobile resides in Founders House, Copenhagen, and is set to launch the first countries in 2014.

About the competition organiser
In 2013, 800+ applications were reviewed online by investors, 500+ startups pitched at qualifying events and 130 made it to the Final of the European Venture Contest and the European Venture Summit 2013.

Founded in Brussels in 1998, privately-owned Europe Unlimited S.A. provides event and online matching platforms between emerging innovative companies and investors across Europe and its regions, sectors and stages, notably brought together in the European Venture Contest (in its 9th edition this year). Europe Unlimited S.A. also organises the Tech Tour events series. To date, Europe Unlimited helped SMEs raise over Euro 1.5 billion and promoted more than 2,500 entrepreneurs.
