The new funding will be used in the expansion of its flagship Yggio 3 platform sales across Europe and increasing production of the new sensors. With Yggio 3, Sensative leads the development of a new generation of IoT platforms called DiMS (Digitalization infrastructure Management System)

An intense 12 week program

Based in Helsingborg, THINK offers the participating start-ups during their intense 12-week acceleration program access to their international network of mentors, the possibility to gain valuable skills in expert-led workshops as well as in personalised business coaching. At the end, the now-accelerated businesses await the great opportunity to pitch their projects in front of top investors.

After receiving positive feedback in the previous years, the acceleration program – which is for free – enters its fifth round this spring. More than 140 companies applied from all over the world, out of which seven were hand-picked and have now the chance to push their idea to the next stage.

Sensative aims to make your home safer and more energy efficient by developing thin sensorial strips for an invisible window and door sensors. It develops also IoT products and services for everyday use.

Kvitter digitises paper receipts, hence focuses on generating a shift to a system of digital receipts for purchases made in store, in order to reduce climate impact by individual customers through reduced wastage of paper and at the same time save business costs.

MotioMera is a digital tool for organizations, working with a KPI to evaluate how well employees are feeling, making it possible to work proactively long term with the social and mental health of employees.

Flugtube wants to bridge the gap between premium and self-service travel booking and itinerary creation by providing a web-based platform.

Hoofstep uses artificial intelligence for instant knowledge of various factors regarding the horse such as its current health and therefore facilitates best practice for horse management.

1UP represents a platform for sports fans to compete in online, event and venue-linked video entry competitions in both P2P and brand-sponsored contests.

Tryggel develops with IoT technology smart sensors in electrical appliances which recognizes patterns of usage and possible hazards, providing a service device for elderly care.

Control smart phone by gesture?

We live in a world where smart devices are everywhere and the future will not be different. Technology will integrate in our lives even further and will become even more intelligent, just like  sci-fi movies warn us. CrunchFish from Malmö is already working on bringing some futuristic uses of mobile technology into reality. Their goal is to change the way we interact with mobile phones and other devices by creating touchless technology.

Just imagine, in the near future silently waving and throwing your hands in the air will not be an odd behavior but a way to give commands to your smart devices. It might take some getting use to, but already now a lot of manufacturers are interested CrunchFish technology, expecting to install it in the next generation mobile phones. GoCam is the first app they developed to allow users to take a selfie by just waving their hands. We can expect that further integration of touchless technology into everyday life will make a huge difference to user experiences of the future.

Practical IoT in your home

IoT (Internet of Things) is one of the hottest topics of tech scene. Though it has not been widely applied in our life just yet, the possibility to create convenient connectedness of everyday technology is immense. Sensative from Lund is working on something that could help bring IoT a step close to becoming a norm of modern homes.

Strips, Sensative’s first product, is a wireless magnetic sensor that is pretty much invisible on windows and doors. Without the hassle of complicated installation, Strips help home dwellers keep an eye on their home security while away. Sensative is also working on a series of new products that will be launched in the near future bringing more possibility of intelligent home facilities.

Technology to care for the elderly

Apart from making  life convenient technology of the future will also make life easier for some vulnerable groups. Aging society is a phenomenon that we all will have to figure out some time soon. Already now there is an issue of lack of good care for elderly who stay home. Tryggel from Malmö was established exactly with the purpose to solve this problem. Tryggel‘s founder got an idea when she realized how dangerous it could be for elderly without good in home care as her own grandma had fallen a few times while alone at home. As a result Tryggel  currently develops a system of home sensors to create a protective environment in home of elderly.

Next Step Dynamics from Malmö has taken a step further. Their technology predicts and monitors the risk of fall, develops recovery program and provides remote care solutions.

In the far future, physical age may not be a problem at all thanks to the progressing technology. But the short-term goal is to increase the quality of life of elderly.

For a better world

Some companies have bigger vision where they try to use technology to solve problems caused by human activities on a global scale. For example, paper sheeting and making this valuable resource as efficiently as possible. This along with recycling ensures demand is met without impacting the state of the planet. Continuing to think on a global scale, food and water shortage are two existing problems facing the world. Innoscentia and Orbital are working on solutions that will contribute to fighting these problems.

Have you ever thought that a great deal of food is being thrown away without a good reason? According to Innoscentia terms like ‘Best Before’ or ‘Use by’ are quite misleading and result in food waste. Consumers will throw away products even when they are perfectly edible. Innoscentia‘s solution is a sensor technology integrated into packaging that could detect food degradation. Their first product is meat packages telling consumers how good the food is.

Orbital Systmes, on the other hand, is after solving the problem of water shortage. Their indoor water system could save up to 90% of water and energy compared to a conventional showers we are currently using. The technology was developed initially for space exploration but soon it might become common for showers in modern homes.

THE STORY OF SENSATIVE

Sensative started out as Fredrik Westman and Anders Hedberg met during the “Inwido – Compete & Incubate” competition by Ideon Open. They teamed up to work on a common idea that evolved around the development of smart and connected windows for the mass-market. In the context of the challenge, Inwido didn’t continue the journey with Sensative, but the two founders decided to give their idea a chance. Further studies of the market led to the development of an ultra-thin window & door sensor – thin enough to be invisible when mounted on windows & doors.

As the idea developed, Sensative AB was founded in 2013 and during the same year Mats Pettersson (the third owner) got involved in the project. With great experience & a network from the mobile industry and product development the product went from an idea to reality.

BUSINESS MODEL, CUSTOMERS AND CHALLENGES

Sensative is in the B2B market. Their main target audience includes different distributors and retailers within the smart home and security sector. The company is also set to approach window & door manufacturers and license their technology and design based on volume sales. In terms of strategy to reach their customers, Sensative is going for a “pull effect” from the end-consumer. And crowdfunding campaign in this approach is an important marketing tool:

“Our goal is to create market awareness, demand from end-consumers and of course sales leads. We also want to entice early adopters to buy and test our sensor and be a part of future products & services,” shares Fredrik.

The price of the first Strips that will be ready in fall 2015 will be 500 SEK. The idea is to push the price down once the production scales.

As of today Sensative is financed by the owners themselves as well as with the help from Almi and LU Innovation System. According to Mats Pettersson in the interview for 8till5, the company’s goal is to make it on their own all the way. There is of course a chance to get partial financing for production and development from potential clients.

Some of the challenges faced by Sensative are related to the stiffness of home security market. According to Fredrik, the smarthome market is fairly simple to approach with more “modern” and open technology. The security market is different, more conservative and using proprietary (closed) technology, which also created the challenge of sensor integration with different security solutions.

CROWDFUNDING AND THE FUTURE

The ambition at Sensative is to be a leading company in the smarthome market starting by setting a new standard for window/door sensors for homes and small offices. Sensative’s core asset is its great and experienced team and in 3-5 years they plan to develop several ground-breaking products targeted for an open smarthome. But already now there is a discussion about new additional features that could be added to the Strips, such as measuring of moisture level to detect leaks in fridges or alert about dishwasher full of water.

Started as an open innovation project, Sensative’s ambition is to continue working in this direction in the future. In 2014 the company received Vinnova funding to create “an open smarthome platform” for public housing. For this project they work closely together with partners from different fields such as two public housing companies, one service provider and one research institute (MAPCI).

Crowdfunding campaign is, therefore, one of the many steps towards this big picture that Sensative envisioned for smarthome market. The crowdfunding campaign will run for 30 days startup June 10th. The goal is to reach 200 000 SEK in funding which will be used for the product of the first batch of sensors which will be manufactured in Poland.

Company’s visit to International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas during the first week of January was in line with its agenda to look for partners and customers abroad. The goal is to build relationships with a big company that focuses on smart homes and home security so that they could help Sensative bring their product to the market. And so far the response was well beyond the expectations, from both companies and customers.

According to Sensative, their product is thinnest on the market which makes it concealable in window or door frames, a factor that is important for two reasons. First, such sensors would be hard to notice for burglars when breaching property. Second, easy to hide sensors will not interfere with home interior.
