This week the plans that three key players for the startup and entreprenuerial ecosystem in Malmö will co-locate, have been announced. The startup house Minc, game community Game Habitat and Media Evolution have announced they will together have a shared house at the end of next year.

This will be part of the new Generate District, Malmös Innovation District.

“We are keeping everything that makes Minc unique – the culture, the community, and our strong program offering – while gaining new conditions that allow us to support even more entrepreneurs,”

says Tomas de Souza, CEO of Minc.

For Minc the change in location is mostly to leave their old venue, which has been home for Minc for 20 years, to facilities that are better suited to todays needs a couple of hundred meters from the current location, and for Media Evolution this is an expansion across the street. But for Game Habitat the move is longer, with them leaving their DebHub location in the old town to move to Varvstaden.

“The co-location creates unique conditions for us to leverage the world-class expertise and creativity that built the Skåne game miracle. At the same time, gaming gains a stronger and clearer position in the innovation ecosystem, paving the way for the next generation of successful game companies to emerge in the region,”

says Peter Lübeck, CEO of Game Habitat.

The new location, former premises av Saab Kockums, is being carried out in close collaboration with the City of Malmö. The aim is to and connect innovation, business development, and the city’s historic industrial heritage.

“I’m really happy that we’re now taking this next step. It’s important for each individual organization, but also for Malmö as an innovative, sustainable, and forward-thinking city of entrepreneurship,”

says Micael Nord, Director for Business and External Relations at the City of Malmö

This move strenghtens the entire region even more, and together with what Copenhagen has done in their Innovation Disctrict, which is focused on deep-tech fields such as life science and quantum, and Helsingborg has done with it’s Innovation District, where the startup house Hetch, Mindpark, E-commerce Park and RecoLab are co-located in the same area and houses, the entire Øresund region is getting strong hubs combining different fields and world leading expertice.

The Øresund region is celebrating a banner year in gaming, with local studios earning top nominations at both the Grammys and the global The Game Awards.

Malmö-based developers are making their mark at the Grammys, with two standout nominations: Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card & A Pirate’s Fortune and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – Secrets of the Spire both being nominated.

“This is one of the most incredible pieces of game news connected to Sweden’s and Malmö’s games industry,”

says Peter Lübeck at Game Habitat

Across the sound, IO Interactive, with its Copenhagen HQ and as well as a 120-person team in Malmö, has secured a high-profile nomination at The Game Awards. Their upcoming 007 First Light (a James Bond game) is in the running for “Most Anticipated Game”, facing off against giants like GTA VI, Marvel’s Wolverine, and The Witcher IV. It’s a remarkable achievement for the studio and the entire Øresund region.

Even in a category without a fully local title, Malmö still has a presence: Embark Studios, nominated for Arc Raiders in “Best Multiplayer”, maintains a small but essential team of three in the city. This quiet contribution reflects how Malmö’s talent is woven into some of the industry’s most exciting projects.

These nominations highlight the regions creativity and technical prowess, solidifying its reputation as a hub for innovative game development.

Coherence, an innovative platform built to empower developers with seamless multiplayer and real-time connectivity tools, has been acquired by Roundtable Interactive Group (RIG), a fast-growing interactive technology company backed by global investment firm EMK Capital.

For coherence’s founder, Dino Patti, the acquisition is more than a financial transaction; it’s validation of a mission that began with a simple but ambitious goal: to revolutionize how developers build multiplayer games and interactive experiences.

“Family and friends often ask why I work so hard. Moments like this are why,”

the founder Dino Patti shared in a LinkedIn announcement.

The partnership with RIG ensures that coherence will not only continue its work but do so with even greater resources and support.

“Coherence was set up to serve developers, and our mantra—‘by developers, for developers’—has never been more relevant.”

Dino Patti wrote

The acquisition comes at a pivotal time for coherence, whose technology was born out of frustration with outdated, inflexible multiplayer solutions.

“…this is a huge milestone in our mission to make the world more connected through digital experiences. I’m extremely happy that we found a strong partner who understands the vision of coherence and the mission we are on,”

At SpilBar 64, take stock of what was released this year. Join at The Royal Academy on November 27th to witness what has been achieved and what the regions gaming industry has in store for 2026.

The event welcomes four Danish game studios who will talk about their launches in 2025. They will share their experiences, how things went, and what they learned.

Afterwards, anyone interested to take the stage and present a game they’ll release in 2026.

OPEN CALL

Do you have a game scheduled for 2026 and want to present & showcase it? Submit it at the Open Call here. Your game needs to be scheduled for 2026, and you will get a maximum of 5 minutes, including a trailer, to showcase your game on the stage.

Program

16:30 Welcome feat. Jakob Ion Wille (The Royal Academy) & Thomas Vigild (DADIU)

16:35 Real Vampires — Inverse Mechanics, Dark Humor and Light Folk Horror – Trine Laier (Those Eyes). “How can 500 years of authentic accounts of vampirism become meaningful play? Trine Laier presents Real Vampires, a game rooted in newly uncovered Polish and Ukrainian tales of the undead. Through “inverse mechanics” — where failure leads to understanding — folklore comes alive in unexpected, human ways.”

16:50 Over the fence and into the fray: Launching Neighbors: Suburban Warfare in Early Access – Andreas Bech (Invisible Walls). “A brief presentation of the activities and thoughts leading up to the Early Access release of Neighbors: Surburban Warfare. What we think worked, what we think didn’t work and what we are still trying to figure out.“

17:05 From Thesis to Business – What we did right (and wrong) in making Discounty – Anne Elsborg (Crinklecut Studios). “Nothing’s better than hearing someone with a serious dose of survivorship bias tell you how to repeat their success, but it’s all I know, so I will take you through the journey of how we turned a student project into a profitable business with our first game, Discounty. What did we learn over the past four years, and what would we do differently today?“

17:20 Coffee Break

17:35 Mind Diver – Victor Breum (Indoor Sunglasses). “Mind Diver launched in September. One month later, it had 97% positive reviews out of 136 total. I’m overjoyed with the rating, and our sales look to end up in the top 10% of the genre. In this talk I’ll discuss commercial expectations, how we studied genre data to accurately estimate sales numbers, and what artistic success means to me. I’ll share some secrets, and hopefully rant about art vs. commerce with grandeur and naivety, so we all don’t die of number-sickness.“

17:50 Quick fire presentations: Upcoming games in 2026. Short max 5 min presentations/trailers.

18:20 News & Announcements

18:30 Mingling & Live showcases of games

20:00 Good night and goodbye

Date: Thursday November 27th 2025 from 16:00-20:00.
Location: The Royal Academy – Auditorium 1 (Festsalen), Philip de Langes Allé 101435 København K Map here
Price: Free
Event info: here

Malmö-based VR startup Cross Reality, known for its turn-key multiplayer VR gaming solutions tailored for arcades and entertainment venues, has secured €300K (SEK3.4 million) in funding from existing investors, Swedish Tech News reports.

Cross Reality’s founders Patrik Zalewski and Marie Möller bring extensive experience from gaming and VR fields, working to make VR gaming accessible and user-friendly. Founded in 2019, Cross Reality developed the CRES platform, a full-service VR experience offering wireless technology, easy setup, and multiplayer capabilities in spaces as small as 100 square meters. Their “free to roam” technology, which allows up to ten players without bulky equipment, reducing downtime with easy battery exchanges.

The company reported a significant 300% increase in revenue in 2023, with SEK3.2 million in earnings. The funding will support expansion following high demand from Sweden and abroad, enabling Cross Reality to refine its user-focused platform that caters to both VR newcomers and experienced players.

Martin Walfisz, a veteran in the gaming industry and Cross Reality board member, sees the company as bridging the gap for users who seek immersive VR experiences at a lower cost, making VR an attractive option for venues worldwide.

Rokoko, the motion detection startup, has launched a partnership the giant of 3D development – Unity. The partnership started last year, with the Motion Library. Now Rokoko has announced that the Motion Library will be subscription free, at least for a limited time.

“We’re grateful for the fantastic start so far with thousands of assets being bought and sold between our users and publishers. We’ve been gathering feedback from our users and learned of a few things that we want to adjust and improve. We are currently working hard on exciting new features, adding new Featured Publishers and incorporating tons of new game ready animations.” the team announced.

One of the changes that will be made is how the subscription model works. But exactly how it all will be is not set yet, apparently:

“Until that update is ready, we have decided to do something that we hope will make all of our current users, and potential newcomers, very happy – granting everyone access the Motion Library subscrition-free.”

So check it out, if you are working on animations in any way.

Minc Game, the Malmö game incubator, will help to develop the next raising star in gaming industry. Now five game companies are selected in the first round of the project which will last for one year.

With the successful game studios who root in Skåne like Ubisoft Massive, Mediocre, Illusion Labs and Tarsier, Malmö region is considered to be one of northern Europe’s most important game development cluster. Minc Game wants to further make Malmö a leading gaming city in Europe.

“Until just a few years ago there were a lot of game companies here, but there was no game region. With help of the work we have done with the non-profit association Game City and now with Minc Game, it feels like we can actually talk about a region, “said Peter Lübeck, project manager at Minc Game.

So, this year Minc Game kicks off its first incubator project and selected five gaming companies to help. The progress seems pretty good so far according to Peter, most of the games are deposit and play since there is money involved.

“Although we are the most watched team and so is the companies that all have proved that there is interests in their games. Oddcomet has released a couple of games, Inglenook Games has raised over a million SEK in a successful Kickstarter campaign and FLWLESS has raised 4.5 million SEK (0.47 million euro) in a seed round. “

Here are the five companies according to the post from digital.di.se. We will probably play one world popular video game from them in the near future worth waiting for.

Inglenook Games – Develops the game Witch Marsh, an action role-playing game set in the 1920s in Massachusetts.
Odd Comet Games – Has developed the game Moomin Quest, a Moomin games in mobile platforms where the player helps the characters to figure out why the winter has not come to Moomin. Will shortly launch the game in Japan.

Pixel Had – Working on Project Catnip, an adventure about a cat, inspired by Scandinavian landscapes and tales.

FLWLESS – Developing an app based on the fantasy e-sports with game-driven challenges, where well-known e-sportsmen and teams can be matched against each other. Moving to Malmö from the US.

The most downloadable game during the first quarter was Kiloo’s Subway Surfers. The game was developed in equal parts by two Danish startups: Kiloo and SYBO games, with SYBO standing for the graphics and the concept, and Kiloo for the shop and social parts. Subway Surfers was first released in May 2012. Since that, it has made a huge step and finally topped the overall download charts.

In terms of revenue, during the first quarter, Mixi’s Monster Strike continued to dominate the revenue charts. Especially well the game is performing in Japan. While last year’s ‘troublemakers’: Pokémon Go and Super Mario Run showed signs of decline in terms of downloads and revenue. Type-Moon’s Fate/Grand Order, mobile game from Japan, increased its positions in revenue charts in the first quarter. Thus, it reached the second place on Google Play and appeared in top five on the App Store.

According to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence mobile game revenue from iOS and Google Play stores grew 53 percent in the first quarter and reached $11.9 billion. At the same time, Google Play revenues are growing faster than Apple’s with 83 percent versus 35 percent respectably.

As Ruika Lin, mobile insights analyst at Sensor Tower states:

“Apple app store revenue grew 35 percent to $6.6 billion from $4.9 billion in the first quarter, compared to the same period a year earlier. Google Play revenue grew 83 percent in Q1 to $5.3 billion from $2.9 billion a year earlier.”

On both stores in the first quarter of 2017 mobile game installs went as high as 15 percent compared with the same period of the previous year: to $8.8 billion from $7.6 billion.

In general, in terms of monetization, mobile games continue to dominate worldwide for all apps. As for the first quarter, they generated up to 80 percent of the gross revenue of Apple’s App Store. When it comes to Google Play the figures are even more impressive with about 91 percent of Google Play revenue.

Unity is surging ahead. The startups has released the second edition of the “Games by the Numbers” report, which employs data to reveal game install trends across different platforms, devices and regions.

Having become one of the strongest technologies within mobile, Unity’s usage says a lot. The company reports that in the first quarter, there existed 219,693 games made with Unity including the best solitaire app around, generating 4,167,678,801 installs (4.2 B), reaching 1,655,093,544 unique devices (1.7 B). On average, this number of installs represents over 18 million new devices and over 45 million installs every day, according to Venture Beat.

Key highlights from the report

Strong first quarter: Unity has seen a 30% increase in mobile gaming in Q1 2016 compared with Q4 2015. One country in particular, China, represented 31% of the total installs of games made with Unity.

Android still ahead: Android retained its status as the global leader in Q1 2016 representing 81% of mobile game installs while iOS maintained 17%.

Leading Android platforms: Kitkat (4.4) and Lollipop (5.0 and 5.1) account for 73% of all Android game installs.

iOS shows more consolidation: 72% of installs are on devices running iOS 9.0 (released September 2015) or later, and 90% on devices running 8.0 (released at September 2014) or later.

A massive milestone has been achieved by the mobile game Subway Surfers – reaching over 1 billion downloads of the app! And the game continues to grow, in markets such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, Indonesia and Turkey. And even more impressive – it has reached this massive milestone with organic growth.

“It’s all healthy organic growth. There’s no user acquisition. We’re not fans of turning games into money-making machines.” says Jeppe Bisbjerg, CEO at Kiloo, to pocketgamer.

“We’ve always taken the approach that this is fair free-to-play. There are no paywalls. We give access to all the content.”

The game was created in equal parts by Kiloo and SYBO games, where SYBO stood for the grafics and concept, while Kiloo for the shop and social parts.

Amongst the biggest games

Not only are the total number of downloads impressive, but the game also has 27 million active users. It may be just as hot as games like the ones on https://slot27.id/.

“We focus on the game itself, on player retention. That’s how you see how fun your game is.”

Compared to other successful nordic games, such as Rovios Angry Birds or Kings Candy Crush Saga, those are very impressive numbers. Angry birds has been downloaded more then 3 billion downloads, and boasted 200 million monthly active users in 2014. Candy Crush on the other hand has had 46 million average monthly users. As it however is both a Facebook and mobile app, download numbers are harder to compare.

Indie approach

But Subway Surfers has not been nearly as much in the spotlight such as other nordic games. One of the reason is that the teams behind it are not at all as interested in making money on the game.

“We’re game developers. We’d rather work on different games.” says Jeppe Bisbjerg

Update: we mistakingly attributed Subway Surfers to only Kiloo, but have corrected the article now showing that is was a collaboration between Kiloo and SYBO games.

Update 2: In the original article it was pointed out that Kiloo is not interested in spin-offs or sequels. However, SYBO is open for those kind of development. We removed the quote to not emphasis this wrongly.
