Danish Growblocks has raised € 6 million as seed capital in an otherwise hard investment environment. Selected customers got on board early, while others waited in line to be allowed to help provide input on the product, which is particularly relevant for companies on their way to do an IPO.

Growblocks is a B2B software-as-a-service company (SaaS), has been running for a year and a half and has now raised a second round of capital. The company was founded by three experienced people from the scaleup environment, where they have been involved in, among other things, Falcon.io, Planday, Templafy, Adform and Raffle.ai.

The product is a solution to optimize and create transparency in sales and marketing in B2B SaaS companies (see more below), and it is now ready to be sold to an (im)patiently waiting queue of clients.

6 fresh million

The new capital round of € 6 million (approx. DKK 44.6 million) is led by the German venture fund Project A, which has not invested in Growblocks before. Growblocks solves a huge challenge that all investors in B2B SaaS companies know, which is why several investors knocked on the door.

“We chose Project A among the many who wanted to be involved, because they have sufficient experience in scaling B2B SaaS scaleups. Therefore, they are good to have on the journey now, as we need to scale our business, now that the product is ready to meet the market. The investment ensures that we can build a fantastic product at the same time as we can increase sales.”

says Toni Holbein, CEO and founder of Growblocks

Toni was the Chief Revenue Officer of both Falcon.io and Planday.

“Both Falcon.io and Planday, which I have been involved in, were sold before reaching EUR 100 million in Annual Recurring Revenue. That is not my goal. I want to be on the whole journey and want to keep a stake, almost no matter how big we get.”

says Toni Holbein

Valuable customers in the development process

In the development phase, Growblocks had a dozen customers with a turnover from 10 to 1,000 million DKK, and they were carefully selected to be able to provide input for the completion of the product. The unfinished solution was delivered in the form of manual consulting work based on insights from a calculation engine, which was the first Growblocks developed.

The customers use Growblock’s solution to optimize their sales and marketing, but the customers’ activity is also a laboratory where Growblocks can optimize and further develop the product. That is still far more important to Growblocks than the turnover that the customers put in.

“Growblocks hits an absolutely huge, unsolved need, which is obvious once you see it. The founders’ background in a number of prominent scaleups, where they have solved precisely this problem with great success, made it easy for us to invest.”

says Sam Cash, partner at Project A

Growblocks’ value for customers

In addition to being able to optimize your sales process, the problem and the solution have great significance for the valuation of a company. “Predictable sales”, i.e. that you live up to your sales budgets is decisive for the share price, both on the stock exchange and when a company is traded or receives an investment. Therefore, Growblocks especially expects that companies considering an IPO can see the value in the product.

“You can regularly see in the news what it means to lack such an overview. A number of rounds of layoffs could perhaps have been avoided with more predictability about what creates the turnover.”

says Toni Holbein

Previous investors join in

In addition to Project A, which comes with the majority of the investment, the lead investor from the first investment, the venture fund Headline, has also contributed, so that the total amount invested so far is approximately DKK 60 million.

The investors in the company count over 20 business angels, including Toni’s, Olafur’s and Andrew’s former boss, Ulrik Bo Larsen, who founded Falcon.io in his time.

Understanding Growblocks: “Budgeting” for B2B SaaS Sales

Growblocks makes a solution that helps especially B2B software-as-a-service companies to get structure and transparency in generating revenue ie. the effect of sales and marketing. The sales and marketing process in this type of company is well described and many have experience in running it, but there was no tool that provided an overview. That’s what Growblocks does, and the idea stems from the founders’ own experiences from, among other things, Falcon.io and Planday.

“Everyone knows what a budget is. It keeps track of costs, like wages and rent and lunch, but the top line — revenue — is typically just one line in the budget. We turn the budget upside down and specify everything that has an impact on revenue, e.g. customer segments, sub-processes in sales, marketing and sales work. We monitor this in real time and compare it with the company’s expected development. When an element does not perform, you can quickly put in there“.

says Toni Holbein

Typically, the company has a target for sales for each month and quarter, and with Growblock’s solution you no longer have to wait for a result on the top line in the monthly accounts.

At the same time, you can simulate different scenarios, e.g. what happens to sales if you hire five salespeople in January? This allows for far more qualified decisions regarding sales.

According to the founders, there are no other similar products on the market today.

This week, Falcon.io, the Copenhagen based SaaS startup for social media management, made an announcement that they acquired Komfo, a social media analytics plattform, that has previously been acquired by Sitecore. The sum for the deal was not disclosed.

“Komfo’s social media advertising and analytics offering is world-class, and we can’t wait to bring it to our customers around the world. By the same token, we’re thrilled to provide an even broader and stronger offering to the Komfo customers.” says CEO Ulrik Bo Larsen

He emphasises that Komfo’s social advertising and analytics capabilities will greatly augment the Falcon platform – as will the employyees from Komfo that will join the Falcon.io team.

“The acquisition of Komfo consolidates Falcon.io’s position as the European market leader. The majority of Komfo staff will join Falcon.io’s Copenhagen, New York, Berlin and Budapest offices, as well as remain at Komfo’s former office in Sofia, Bulgaria, which will become a Falcon.io location.”

Falcon.io also reports on their continued growth, with their fiscal year ending with 40% revenue growth. It has also grown outside of Europe, as it reported a 45% year-over-year client growth rate in the US. It has also added many international brands and corporates to it’s client list, including Goodyear Dunlop and Time Inc, joining those it already has such as Carlsberg, Toyota, Momondo, Panasonic and Coca-Cola.

In a TechCrunch interview, Ulrik goes into further details and talks about the trend in their segment in general, as well as their position:

“When we compare ourselves to others in the space, and consider the avenues of how you can grow, everyone is talking about consolidation right now, private equity funds looking in, and so on. There is no doubt that we have the strongest metrics and more momentum than some of the others.” Ulrik says to TechCrunch.

2015 was an eventful year for Falcon Social. Not only did the startup receive a venture investment of € 15 million from Prime Ventures, Northcap and Target Partners to enable more brands to deliver a data-driven digital experience for their customers. It also secured a number of impressive partnerships with the major social networks, including Facebook (via DataSift) and Twitter, as well as established offices in New York, Berlin and Budapest besides the headquarters in Copenhagen. And now it has also become an official partner to Instagram,

Instagram’s official partnership program

Instagram’s Partner Program identifies the world’s best SaaS vendors that are helping businesses achieve growth through Instagram. In November 2015, Instagram announced the first 40 official partners of a total of 100 planned globally, where Falcon Social is now included in the second round. Instagram only chooses partners if they are among the best within on the three categories: Ad tech, Community Management or Content Marketing. Falcon social was chosen for it’s community management strength.

“I’m proud to announce that Falcon Social is now an official Instagram Partner. We’re one of the first European social media management suites to be badged in Community Management in the Instagram Partner Program, and this marks a huge milestone in the Falcon journey.” says Ulrik Bo Larsen, CEO.

“Our technology empowers our clients to interact easily with their Instagram community by addressing their comments and questions quickly and efficiently.” says Mikael Lemberg, Director of Product Management at Falcon Social.

Double revenue and winning the trust of large brands

Falcon Social did during 2015 strengthen it’s position within social media management, and it’s revenue more then doubled, as it grew by 104 percent. It also grew to 256 employees, up from 163 a year ago. Most in Copenhagen (226 employees), followed by the New York office (28) and the rest in Berlin and Budapest (7 and 4 respectively). It also continued to get world-renowed consumer brands as customers, a list which now includes Coca Cola Enterprises, Carlsberg, Warner Music, Redken, Mentos and Yogi Tea.

Individual profiles based on social data

This year we will see Falcon Social enable marketers to deliver a personalized digital experience to each individual customer, which will pave the way for a new type of marketing strategy. Their goal is to be the first social media management suite marketers can rely on to unify cross-channel data, and to deliver an effective customer-centric digital experience.

“Instagram yields engagement levels that are off the charts, and it’s still at the beginning of its journey into social media marketing. There’s a lot of opportunity here for marketers.” says Ulrik

Today, data is an important key to success for large companies. The more real-time data they can analyze, the more precisely they can target and engage customers with the right message at the right time. Falcon Social offers a unified SaaS platform for social media listening and management. The startup helps their enterprise clients to explore the full potential of social media marketing and instill a social-first thought process in their employees.

Past two weeks turned out to be extremely eventful for both Oresund region as well as Nordics in general. A series of great events such as TechBBQ in Copenhagen and Internet Discovery Day in Malmo culminated with an announcement of Nordic Startup Awards winners at Arctic15 in Helsinki.

At the awards ceremony selected winners in various categories from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland were narrowed down to one absolute winner in each category. And while all the nominees and finalists deserve the title of winners, here are those who are voted to be number one:

Back in March Falcon Social, with its SaaS social media management platform, closed funding deal in Series B which amounted to 15 € million. The financing round was led by Prime Ventures and joined by existing Falcon Social investors Northcap and Target Partners, bringing the company’s total financing to date to 23$ million.

Be My Eyes, an app that helps blind people via connection them to a sighted person through a video call, was launched back in winter. The project generated a great deal of interest, and in just one day after the launch the new app had over 10.000 users, the number which is counting.

Neil Murrey won the category of the startup journalist for his contribution through The Nordic Web, a website that takes an in-depth look at the Nordic technology scene and provides data-driven insight and analyses.

Congratulations to the winners!

Falcon Social, with its SaaS social media management platform, announced today the closing of € 15 M ($ 16 M) in new funding. The Series B financing round was led by Prime Ventures and joined by existing Falcon Social investors Northcap and Target Partners, bringing the company’s total financing to date to $ 23 M. The new financing will help support the startup’s product development and innovation and support its continued global expansion.

“It’s a big vote of confidence to have investors of this caliber embrace the vision of Falcon Social. There is a void in the market for a scalable social media platform capable of unifying business units within the enterprise, while delivering feature-rich tools.” says CEO Ulrik Bo Larsen

“Our goal is to continue to evolve Falcon Social to meet that need by growing the platform organically. The new financing will help scale the business and accelerate our product development roadmap.”

Strong growth since the start

Founded in 2010, Falcon Social set out to tackle the social media marketing needs for enterprises. Today, Falcon Social can count nearly 500 world-renowned enterprises including brands such as Coca-Cola, Jaguar, Redken, Warner Music and Carlsberg. The startups service helps it’s client listen, engage, publish, measure and manage their social media content through its unified social media management platform.

Falcon Social has maintained a track record of exceptional year-over-year growth and closed 2014 by reporting 443 percent revenue growth and 130% customer growth. The company is on track to continue that strong momentum in 2015. With offices in Copenhagen and New York, and a worldwide sales and support team, Falcon Social has over the years grown to employ 180 people, with over 38 different nationalities.

Expanding and tech

In addition to focus further on product innovation, the new financing will help the company establish an even stronger foothold globally. Especially North America. The startup plans to make significant employee hires at the leadership level and in other supporting roles.

“We are pleased to support the Falcon Social team during this exciting period of growth and look forward to see them lead the industry by changing the way enterprises manage their social media content.” says Roel de Hoop, Partner at Prime Partners

Prime Ventures is a Amsterdam and Cambridge based venture capital firm focusing on tech, which manages over 465 million euro in committed capital. Prime Ventures joins Northcap and Target Partners which are already investors. Northcap has a strong presence in this region, and besides Falcon Social it also just announced an investment in Sekoia. Other startups in the region in it’s portfolio include Nocopo, IBA and adQuota.

Update: we incorrectly stated that the round was € 14.6 M originally. It was € 15 M.

An evening focusing on both general terms and useful tips. The event consisted of 6 speakers, presenting how they work with growth hacking and success-stories as well as failures.

“An evening with focus on mechanics, and not on pitches or value proposition, that or often heard at startup events”

– welcomed Morten Elk, CEO at SimpleSite and initiator of the event. It was a packed evening, at Founders House in the Startup Village. The guest list of 100 people being signed up already weeks in advance. Also very interesting, and good, was that a lot of the audience was not just entrepreneurs, but also key employees at startups, especially the larger ones.

6 presentations on growth hacking

All six presentations were by very interesting key players – who work with growth hacking on some of the larger startups in the region. A great line-up.

Christos Iosifidis from Vine app Vivino

Peter Engelbrecht, from phone company Firmafon

Ronja Gustavsson, from social media management Falcon Social

Martin Thorborg, from accounting service Dinero

Jonas Nielsen from website builder SimpleSite

Jon Schäffer from digital conference service Conferize

Some take aways and lessons learned

Christos from Vivino talked about how they use growth hacking, and how his background from the games industry influences it.

“It’s about understanding core product value and user behaviour”

He talked about his view on the core concepts, but also that tests aren’t the most important thing in Growth Hacking

“It’s not just running a test. I became sceptical to test. You cannot really test everything.”

“However, it can be used as a tool of knowing versus understanding”.

He outlined 3 key things that you need to understand to do good growth hacking:

Where are your users coming from, how and why

Are they served core product value within the first 60 seconds? Especially true for mobile he mentioned.

How do they engage and how often

Excel, Google Spreadsheet and RStudio

Peter from Firmafon, a B2B phone company that is not awful, as he introduced it himself, was ned up and went into details .

“Do not waste your time on growth hacking when you only 100 visitors a month”

He went thru tips for tools. He mentioned that Moz and Optimazily are great tools, but everyone uses them as well, so it is hard to differentiate with others. Doing manual and custom analysis was important. For that he went thru the differences between Excel and Google Spreadsheet, with a strong preference to Googles solution. he gave a couple of great tips:

Google spreadsheet vs excel:

Cloud – everyone works in one master document

Powerful scripting – Google Apps Script is javascript, and runs in the cloud.

Connected sheets – everything is in the cloud, instead of needing to be on one computer. He mentioned functions like URLFetchApp and to_google_spreadsheet, that help a lot.

Powerful analysis – Amongst other FILTER and QUERY are powerful lookup tools.

“But google docs will only get you so far. ones you put half a million values in it, it gets kind of stuck. Then we discovered ‘R’”

He went on to go thru Rs benefits to spreadsheets: R is a programming language. It is better then any spreadsheet, very powerful analysis. It’s unifies logic, which is a lot better then having your ‘logic’ is spread out over multiple formulas in different cells, spreadsheet, or scripts, that get impossible to trouble shoot when it gets too complicated.

It is a universe in itself, so he mentioned amongst other that, RStudio IDE together with RMySQL, dplyr and ggplot2 are good resources to start with.

Peter also gave tips for what to analyse. He mentioned that cohort analysis is a great thing to do, it gave them an enourmous insight. Amongst other that there is not just one life-time value. Segment costumers, they might have different life time values.

Growth hacking management

Ronja from Falcon Social talked about her team, and growth hacking from a management approach. Falcon Social has had a remarkable 640 % MRR for the first full year of sales. Already growing faster this year.

She highlighted 6 things to think about a team that has a growth hacking mindset.

Context – put up absurd goals, and prepare people for that it will get hairy and complicated sometimes.

Goals – here she talked about MQL, marketing qualified leads, which was their main KPI.

Data – an important insight was that not the entire marketing team was data-savvy. Therefore visualising data on screen in the department helped everyone keeping track of it.

People – Her lesson was to be extremely sceptical. Take your time to hire the right people with the right mindset. Every team member counts.

Listen – She mentioned how they use listening to be flexible and take advantages of external changes. Such as creating landing pages or blogs for specific events very quickly. Or about contacting companies depending on what your competition does, or what happens in your business area.

Process – create processes, but if they don’t work, kill them.

She also talked a bit about content marketing:

“Don’t worry too much about what to write in the beginning, probably no-one will read it anyway. just write articles and get them out, learn from there.”

Crazy stories from the past

Martin Thorborg was next up, talking with humour about stories from his entrepreneurial past. He mentioned both the game Fight Club and the software Spamfighter, with stories about smaller changes they made, that affected signup rates enormously. The main take-away was:

“There is always, always, always something that you can take you sign-ups to 5 times or 10 times your current. You need to think about it hard, and maybe drink a lot of beer or smoke stuff – but there is a way”

Growth hacking at SimpleSite

Jonas from SimpleSite presented how they work. SimpleSite has really been growing recently, having reached 400 000 signup a month, and having reached 80 000 paying subscribers.

Jonas talked about how they now with the volume are really data driven – and have tested both smaller changes, as well as large strategic things. One of them that he highlighted was going from premium (with a 30 day trial), to freemium – begin free ‘forever’ but charging for services that advanced users will want to use. This they tested first on selected markets, and found out that they would loose 10% of the paying costumers. – something they felt confident that they could regain with the added signups freemium would bring in.

He also mentioned that some things they found out by blind luck – such as adding a questionnaire at the beginning. This was expected to be bad, but instead showed a 12% increase!

“If you have the volume to do test, do them. You do not know what will work.”

He also showed stats of the past 100 tests they have made, and the changed they tracked. Clearly, most tests had resulted in worse conversations:

“1 in 16 tests works out for us”

Growth Hacking to build a community

Jon from Conferize was the last to present. He mentioned how they grow users thru both conference organisers, speakers, as well as community. One driving factor right now was thru email, often from conference organisers, where he shared some data, open rates amongst attendees and speakers being roughly 70%, of them 30% clicked thru and of those around 50% signed up.

‘Save the leads’ hack are they trying right now. Giving users the chance to have a discount at conferences if they invite 3 friends.

Key take-aways from it all

Important take-aways: don’t test unless you have enough data. Use common sense or costumer interviews in the beginning, When you have users in the thousands then maybe you can start to test.

Some rule of thumbs mentioned: With 1000 interactions you can measure changes of around 10 percentage-points with statistical certainty. With 10 000 interactions you can measure 3 percentage points.

Also, there was a discussion when it comes to B2B, if free trial or demo was the way to go.

“Free trial did not work for us. With a free demo, we gave them a call, and that moved the sales process.”

Was Ronjas take on it, while Peter instead said that for them free trial is the way to go:

“For us ease of use is important. If free trield would not work, then we have a problem with our product”

Growth hacking has not one certain formula, and if that was not clear to the attendees already it certainly became during the event. However, a lot of people got useful information they can put to use themselves, and the entire event seemed very appreciated.

The entire event was filmed, and the films will be realeased later. We will out them up in our video section when they are out.

The ambition is to have the Nordic Growth Hacker event quarterly, so we look forward to the next one in the beginning of 2015. This was a great event, and something that shows the strength of #cphftw – leveraging the community to reach out to relevant participants.

It turns out for the U.S. market there already exists one of these – however not run by the government, but rather privately. Mik Strøyberg was the person involved in this, and it started with Lemonsqueeze, and has evolved further into something called the NYC incubator.

We had a talk with Mik Strøyberg about his experience helping European startups expand into the U.S.

Tell us a little bit about your background:

“I’ve helped Issuu to establish itself in the U.S. – My role was to to help increase traffic, do global PR and Marketing and most importantly close the big brands like the New York Times, Conde Nast, VICE, and get a US presence. After starting the U.S. office, I had more requests from companies who saw the same challenges as Issuu did when it came to entering the U.S. market: how to do it quickly, cost effectively, and with high quality. They didn’t know how to do this, but they could see that the companies that were trying to establish themselves had a hard time getting a foothold and were spending too much time doing it. As an entrepreneur myself, this piqued my interest. Over the next few years I realized there was a real market for facilitating and assisting with this process. I saw no other competitors in the market, so as Issuu continued to run on rails in the U.S., I said my goodbyes and moved on to found Lemonsqueeze, and now the NYC Incubator”

You recently established an office space called NYC Incubator. Tell us a little about that:

“NYC Incubator is a space we created for companies that need help getting started in the U.S.. Having a U.S. address and a flexible workspace means they can have a home base to create their U.S. entity and figure out logistics like where to stay for the long term, how to navigate the tax system, and how to get a VISA. From here, companies can scale. We know how to do all the tasks that typically restrict other companies in their entry. We want the innovative and fast-growing companies in our space to have peace of mind when it comes to the basics so they can have the courage to take the plunge into the U.S. with the support of NYC Incubator”

Who is part of the NYC incubator right now?

“Some of the companies currently working out of here are Loop, TAYLR, LevelK, NPinvestor, Falcon Social, openXO, Nosco and Konstellation”

“We’re probably going to have four companies more by September and then we must wait to take someone in until one of the current companies opts to move to their own office. ”

The NYC Incubator and as well as Lemonsqueeze fits with the advices that the Geist group gave to the Danish Government, their rule #7: “A helping hand on a foreign country”. NYCI and Lemonsqueeze is a private solution, but having a one stop shop in the U.S. is certainly a great option. Something that Mik sees:

“The Foreign Ministry and Danish industry are great on paper but have not given entrepreneurs the sufficient hands-on assistance to create traction and a fast entry and have therefore unfortunately slowed them in their growth!”

Lemonqueeze, how does that fit into it?

“We are not consultants, and we do not provide the type of traditional service that you would find at the for example the Danish Chamber of Commerce. With our clients, our approach is much more hands-on. We are their extended presence in a new market, and represent them as if it were our own business. This means that our clients have the opportunity not only to gain direct insight into the market but also make a genuine sale. We create traction and ensure that they can maintain focus on their core markets while simultaneously receiving valuable knowledge and insight as a base from which to build further U.S. expansion.”

“Lemonsqueeze helps European companies who want their slice of the U.S. market. We create a direct path to gain a foothold in a market that can sometimes be very impenetrable. We realized early on, same as with Issuu, that it’s about insight first and turnover second. Many companies chasing the dream of the U.S. market end up being smacked with a harsh reality. You can have an excellent product or service and little to no competitors in sight, but that won’t get you anywhere without a network of contacts, a U.S. entity, a VISA, a knowledge of recruitment, a tax attorney, a bookkeeper… The list goes on. At Lemonsqueeze, we can make sure everything is as it should be so that valuable time and energy can be focused on what matters.”

Today I held a short lunch seminar on the subject of the most prominent startups in the region. The seminar was held because I was asked to do it, and when I thought about it I realized would be interesting to do. So I did, even if it was with a limited amount of preparations (which I can be accused of, but my main philosophy is: better to do then to don’t). So I did it.

It was held over lunch at CreativeLab, the creative event concept at the SHIP co-working space. Because we have a policy of livecasting whatever we do, you can watch the recording above (Our new Bambuser channel can be found here).

If you want to download the slides, I have made them available on slideshare but there are quite low resolution there, so can be found as pdf here as well.

I am probably describing some of the startups a little bit wrong (sorry for that), and I missed some things in the presentation (corrected in the downloadable versions). But I hope it creates some value for you as the viewer anyway.

Update 1: Some have asked why so many people are walking around and the background noice – the location where the presentation was held is the auditorium in the CreativeLab, called “trappan”, and is just that: the main stairs between the first and second floor. It is designed to be in the middle of the entire place, so that any presentations held there can have drop-in / drop-out flow. A somewhat special enviroment, but I love it, often with a lot of student from Lunds University sitting around in the open areas, and the business and entrepreneurs on the stairs themselves…

Update 2: I should of course list the top 50 startups mentioned as well! Here they are (in the order presented, i.e. in alphabetical order after category):
