Fact: there are fewer women employed in tech than men. Largely held opinion: this lack of women in the tech industry is a problem. A big problem, for two primary reasons:

The lack of women entrepreneurs is not just a women’s issue — it’s everyone’s issue: With more female founders, the entire tech community will benefit from increased diversity, a larger pool of ideas and the ability to meet different needs and accomodate to different niches.

We want and need to create more role models: A role model is someone who inspires you, not only through their acheivements, but through the fact that they are not all too different from you. By limiting the amount of female speakers in media, the tech-startup community alienates women further and discourages them from becoming inspired. With more female founders to lead the way, more women will recognize their own potential.

Clearly, there are large benefits to boosting the number of female founders in the tech community. But how do we solve the female shortage and reap these benefits without discriminating, or being dictated by age-old stereotypes and illogical sexism? A group of innovative ladies have found the perfect solution: a meet-up dedicated to female entrepreneurs (the first of its kind), hosted in collaboration with #CPHFTW. The event takes place on the 29th of June from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm at Rainmaking Loft in Copenhagen, and will gather all those passionate about this topic.

Note that this meet-up is not just girls-only (this would defy the first point made above), in fact EVERYONE concerned for the success and evolution of the tech industry is welcome and encouraged to come along. Together, we can make a difference.

But don’t just take our word for it, have a read of how the hosts approach this topic, and why they think a get together like this is the start to a great solution:

“Having co-founded Queue-it at a relatively late stage in my career, I have come to realize the importance of role model visibility to encourage more female tech entrepreneurship. Before founding our company, I honestly never came across a single female founder, which probably delayed my decision. By bringing the female side of the awesome Copenhagen startup community together, I strongly believe that we will empower more women to grow their startups or become founders for those who are currently in a stage of consideration (we know you are out there!)” says Camilla Ley Valentin, Co-founder and CCO.

Gulnaz Khusainova from EasySize adds:

“I want to help make Copenhagen the best community for anyone to start a company in. The first step is to encourage more women to take the plunge into entrepreneurship. This will not only help the community itself, but also make these companies stronger and more competitive internationally.”

Finally, allow Louise Ferslev of MyMonii to outline why she is involved in this project:

“To inspire even more potential female entrepreneurs and also be inspired myself. I really want more women to discover that you don’t need supernatural power to create a startup — just a bunch of discipline, patience and courage to reach out for help.”

So what are you waiting for? Take a look at the agenda and sign up for this fantastic event here.

Back by popular demand: the Wearable Tech Hackathon returns to Malmö for the second time as part of the Wearables Week Skåne 2015 official program. Thank you Minc in Malmö for this initiative which provides a haven for hackers. Time for you to use yours skills and with the help of fellow hackers, come up with a prototype of potentially the next hottest Wearable Tech product! Test your ideas, and your limit, within Wearable Technology, regardless whether it is related to fitness, health or fashion. What will you be able to come up with in 24 hours?

What: The Hackathon will happen over 24 hours. Doors open at 9.30 on Saturday, with the hackathon starting at 10.30. Electrokit will provide teams with a Starterkit and there will also be a mini-shop open for you to buy extra materials from (bring your credit card!) You’ll be assigned to teams of at most 5 persons, matched together according to skill level. Fuel for your hacking will be offered in the form of snacks, drinks and food. Winners of the hackathon will be announced and awarded on the following Sunday.

When: Saturday, April 25th 9:30 am to Sunday, April 26th, 12:00 PM

Where: Minc Malmö, 3 Anckargripsgatan, 21119

Who: The Hackathon is open to the public, and anyone interested is welcome to participate. That being said, this being a tech event, the focus is primarily on IT students, tech people in the region and interested entrepreneurs.

The hackathon asks of you that you have some amount of experience and skill (some knowledge of hardware (i.e arduino), understanding of prototyping, etc.) But if you’re a complete novice, don’t worry! 3 different courses will be offered prior to the Hackathon to help improve your skills. Monday April 20th offers a two hour Laser Cutter introduction, Tuesday, April 21st offers a two hour course in 3D printing and the following Wednesday, April 22nd offers atwo and a half hours introductory course to Arduino.

Book your ticket now! Also make sure you have a look at the full program while you’re at it. This is a popular event: seats are limited and some courses offer different timetables so make sure to choose a course that best suits your interests and your schedule.

SEED Capital, the most active venture capital fund in Denmark which has over 70 startups in its portfolio, has reported record-breaking profits in the last year. This success is mainly credited to developments within the portfolio. The recently published report also shows a total of four exits undergone in the past year, including Contera Pharma, Libratone, Sense and the big exit by Endomondo. The sale of Endomondo to American Under Armour for € 75 million in the beginning of 2015 is no doubt the main source of last year’s pleasing figures.

€ 32 million profit

The venture industry has been through some trials and tribulations, and the development of SEED Capital’s funds are not to be underappreciated. The accounts for Fund 2 has a bonus of € 32 millions (237 million DKK) on the bottom line in 2014, making this the third consecutive year of positive results. The portfolio includes startups like of Vivino, Reapplix, Trustpilot and, the latest addition, Mofibo. There are several exits in sight and many of the companies are making good progress, with Galecto Biotech having entered into an agreement with Brystol-Myers Squibb, which has a potential value of € 335 million. If followed through, we will likely see the effect of this agreement on the 2015 reports.

So what is the secret behind SEED Capital’s seemingly consistent choice of winners? According to managing partner, Ulla Brockenhuus-Schack, it involves strategic thinking and some amount of risk-taking.

“Venture is hard, takes time and patient investors. Portfolio-focused thinking is essential in this game and it is important to understand that you have to launch many ships as it is not easy to predict which ones will end up being a success, “she says.

With numbers like these, what big plans does SEED Capital have in store for 2015?

“The whole venture capital industry has gone through a long learning curve over the last 10 years… We have become better at spotting winning companies and today our investments are made somewhat closer to the market than in 2005. I have great expectations for our second fund and believe that it will deliver excellent returns for our investors.” says Brockenhuus-Schack.

Public and private money

SEED Capital is not without some controversy. It’s mixture of public and private money, say some are giving it incentives not aligned with the rest of the VC community. However, the fund has shown good progress over the years.

SEED Capital has a strong partnership with the government funded innovation incubator Pre-Seed Innovation and they are able to invest € 250 000 – 750 000 at the early stages of a startups development, allowing a startup an opportunity to prove their technology and business. Depending on capital need, SEED Capital can then later invest up to € 9 million in the upcoming rounds – preferably in syndication with international investors.

The funds keep on rolling in for Scandinavia’s biggest carpolling and peer-to-peer car rental platform GoMore. After their launch in Spain, which doubled their userbase to over 500 000 users, the Danish startup has also increased their funding by an undisclosed amount in millions of Danish kroner.

Update: Finans.dk speculates that it is 10 million DKK ( € 1.4 million). GoMore themselves have not confirmed the number.

It’s only about six months since GoMore last raised capital from, among others, SEED Capital. Among this round of investors are the Austrian fund Polar Light Capital and Kaare Danielsen, founder of Jobindex and investor in several other Danish startups including Firmafon and SimpleSite.

“I see great potential in GoMore,” says Danielsen. “They’ve proved capable of establishing themselves as the leading actor in the Scandinavian markets and the acquisition of Amovens in Spain was a very smart move.”

The confidence from the investors is of course highly appreciated and GoMore is certainly growing fast.

“We’ve been working hard to make sure our product is the best it can possibly be by investing in brand new apps for iPhone and Android among other things. Now the time has come to show the world what we can really do,” says Matias Dalsgaard, founder and CEO of GoMore.

So what’s next for the firm? A solid plan is intact: consolidate the position as market leader in Scandinavia and expand to several newmarkets.

“We could choose to breakeven or even make a profit, but for now we’re investing in growth. My plan is to launch GoMore in three new markets in 2015,” predicts Dalsgaard.

It’ll be exciting to see what the next big headline for GoMore will be!

Introducing Creative Business Cup: a worldwide competition to help Denmark’s creative entrepreneurs shape our future! Bringing together the most talented creative entrepreneurs from across the country, the competition with its series of workshops and ‘boosters’ helps strengthen their creative and business potential, and promotes an awareness of the creative foundations of business. It provides a unique global network which allows creative entrepreneurs to scale their business concepts, connect with investorsand enhance their overall business potential.

To do this, the competition has organized, in cooperation with the serial-entrepreneur Lasse Chor, a series of free workshops across Denmark. The purpose of these so called ‘entrepreneurial boosters’ is to locate Denmark’s foremost regional, creative entrepreneurs in the making, X-factor style. They will also help them develop their idea, refine their product and sharpen their marketing skills. Of course for a any business you will need to have a business legal insurance which is typically utilized in large corporations but is essential for any size of business which has the risk of exposure lawsuits or to offset the expense of when they need to bring suit against a client.

Those who do well to these entrepreneurial boosters will advance on to the Danish Championships for creative entrepreneurs in June, and from there proceed to the World Championships for creative entrepreneurs, scheduled to be held in November. There, they will compete for cash prizes of several hundred thousand dollars, as well as private access to investors , networking, counseling and much more.

Boosters are held at the following locations and times:

Aarhus: March 13th and 14th @ Filmbyen 2

Odense: March 20th and 21st @ Coworking Odense

Vejle: April 10th and 11th @ Spinderihallerne

Horsens: April 16th @ Horsens Statsfængsel

Roskilde: April 17th and 18th @ Musicon

Copenhagen: April 24th and 25th @ Founders House

Aalborg: May 8th and 9th @ Aalborg University
