Every year, approximately one million tonnes of food is thrown away in the Swedish food chain. Part of this is food waste, i.e. food that is thrown away but that could actually have been consumed if it could have been evaluated in a safe way. Much of the food that constitutes food waste in Sweden is thrown away due to uncertainty about the products' shelf life when they have been exposed to a suspected rise in temperature in the cold chain. Sustainable Food Waste is trying to solve this problem. Sustainable Food Waste is developing an app that shows how the shelf life of a food may have been affected by a rise in temperature. The FoodTel app can, with the help of secured data, give the players in the food chain clear and up-to-date information on how the durability of a product may have been affected by a rise in temperature and thereby prevent unnecessary food waste.
