Good Tape, the Danish transcription tool born out of online media Zetland’s newsroom, has recently announced it has become an independent company through a management buy-out in which its founders take over Zetland’s ownership stake.

Alongside the buy-out, the company has raised 4.5 million DKK (approximately €600,000) led by Nordic Makers, with Zendesk co-founder and former CPO Alexander Aghassipour joining the board.

“There is currently so much uncertainty and skepticism around AI tools that many people are getting too little out of tools that could actually help them. Good Tape finds the right balance between utility and trust,” .

Founded by Ýmir Gyðuson Gíslason and Lasse Finderup, Good Tape began as an internal tool for journalists who needed their interviews transcribed without sending sensitive material to third parties.

The startup has already good traction. It reports that it is today used by 3 million people in more than 150 countries and has completed over 15 million transcriptions in more than 100 languages for journalists, researchers, consultants, lawyers, and public sector teams.

The company is now launching Good Tape Explore, a new layer that links new recordings to everything a user has previously transcribed, making it possible to find changed positions, contradictions, and supporting arguments with reference to the original audio. The service runs in a private, EU-hosted workspace with ISO 27001 certification, GDPR compliance, EU data storage, and no customer data used for AI training. With the spin-out, Good Tape is betting that privacy can be a product rather than just compliance, while now standing entirely on its own commercially.
