Danish AgTech startup NitroVolt has secured € 3.5 million in seed funding to advance its green ammonia technology, aimed at revolutionizing sustainable fertilizer production directly on farms. The funding round saw investments from BackingMinds, Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund (EIFO), EQT Foundation, Satgana, DivisionM, and Breakthrough Energy Fellows. The capital will support NitroVolt’s mission to bring its container-sized, on-site ammonia production system, called “Nitrolyzer,” from lab to field, with the first demonstration unit expected soon.

NitroVolt’s innovative approach addresses the need for environmentally friendly alternatives in ammonia production, a critical component of modern agriculture that currently contributes significantly to global CO₂ emissions. Traditional ammonia synthesis, responsible for producing 500 million tons of CO₂ per year—comparable to the aviation industry—is both centralized and carbon-intensive, relying heavily on fossil fuels and long, complex supply chains vulnerable to global disruptions. By contrast, NitroVolt’s decentralized “Nitrolyzer” system allows for ammonia synthesis on-site at farms, using only air, water, and renewable electricity.

“The climate crisis demands action today, and by providing small modular units, we can rapidly implement a green solution. NitroVolt has the potential to deliver both environmental impact by reducing CO₂ emissions and societal impact by ensuring nitrogen-fertilizer availability, especially in vulnerable regions facing food insecurity.”

says Suzanne Zamany Andersen, co-founder NitroVolt

The Nitrolyzer’s potential impact is substantial. By producing green ammonia on demand at the point of use, it enables farmers to bypass the traditional ammonia supply chain, significantly reducing associated emissions and ensuring a resilient source of fertilizer. With a compact, container-sized unit, NitroVolt’s technology is easy to deploy and responsive to renewable energy sources, ensuring a fully sustainable process that gives farmers control over their fertilizer needs.

“NitroVolt’s technology is a potential game changer for farmers and our food security. The founders, Suzanne and Mattia, have impressed us with their execution power and have recruited a great core team around them. We’re proud to continue to NitroVolt and are happy to see a stellar line up of new investors join this round,”
