Lund University has been ranked #1 in the world for sustainability in the latest QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026, solidifying the Øresund region’s reputation as a global leader in green innovation and education.

Lund University’s top ranking is a testament to its pioneering work in sustainability, from renewable energy research to circular economy initiatives.

“Humble, proud, and inspired to continue moving forward – that’s how I would summarise the feeling that Lund University is now ranked number one in the world. It is a fantastic recognition of our work and confirmation that we are on the right path. I am incredibly proud of our staff, students, alumni, and all the organisations and companies we collaborate with – the success belongs just as much to them as to the university,”

says Erik Renström, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University.

The university’s interdisciplinary approach and strong partnerships with industry and government have made it a model for institutions worldwide.

“Lund University’s strength lies in integration – environmental impact, governance, and equality are not treated as separate goals but as interconnected parts of one strategy. In addition, the Scandinavian way of an open society with flat organisational structure works in our favour.”

says Erik Renström, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University.

The Øresund region – spanning Skåne and Greater Copenhagen, is home to a dense cluster of world-class universities. Besides Lunds University, Copenhagen University (consistently ranked among the top 50 universities worldwide, with leading programs in climate science and green technology), Technical University of Denmark (DTU) (a hub for sustainable engineering and clean energy solutions), Malmö University (known for its urban sustainability and social innovation research), Roskilde University (driving advancements in sustainable technology and policy) and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Kristianstad University being here, focusing on subjects such as food innovation.

Being home to so many top Universities is one of the things that makes this region so strong. Together, these institutions create a dynamic ecosystem where academia, startups, and established companies collaborate to tackle global challenges.

With Copenhagen aiming to be the world’s first carbon-neutral capital and Skåne’s ambitious climate goals, the Øresund region is not just talking about sustainability, it’s putting ideas into action. From cleantech startups to smart city projects, the area is a hotbed for innovation that aligns profit with purpose.
