News Øresund reports that Copenhagen has announced plans to investigate eight potential new metro lines, including a proposed Öresund Metro connecting to Malmö. This initiative follows a preliminary screening by Metroselskabet and aims to enhance the city’s public transportation network.

The decision, supported by a political majority in Copenhagen, will see Metroselskabet conduct detailed analyses of the proposed lines. These analyses will include passenger forecasts, traffic impact assessments, construction and operational economics, expected residual financing, overall socio-economic impacts, and CO2 emissions. The results are expected to be presented in the autumn.

“The metro is the backbone of Copenhagen’s development, but new metro lines are large and complex projects. Therefore, it makes sense to already look at which lines can better connect the city in the future,”

said Copenhagen’s Lord Mayor Lars Weiss

In recent years, Copenhagen has significantly expanded its metro system, reflecting the city’s commitment to enhancing public transportation and reducing carbon emissions. The city has long been a global leader in cycling, with extensive bike lanes and bike-friendly policies that encourage residents and visitors to choose bicycles over cars. By investing in both cycling and public transport, Copenhagen aims to create a seamless, eco-friendly transportation network that supports the city’s ambitious environmental goals and improves the quality of urban life.

In late March, the Danish government and Copenhagen already agreed to build a new metro line, M5, to the entire new mega project the artificial island Lynetteholm. The development Lynetteholm in Copenhagen’s harbor entrance and the construction of the first phase of the Østlig Ringvej, known as the harbor tunnel will already develop the city a lot in the coming years.

The eight potential metro lines under consideration are:

  1. Rigshospitalet – Herlev Hospital (new line)
  2. Vanløse St. – Tingbjerg (extension of line M1/M2)
  3. Stengade St. – Tingbjerg (branch of line M5)
  4. København Syd – Hvidovre Hospital (extension of line M4)
  5. København Syd – Emdrup St. (extension of line M4)
  6. Tuborg Havn – Københavns Lufthavn (new line)
  7. Bispebjerg Hospital – Holmen (new line)
  8. Öresund Metro (Prags Blv. Øst – Malmö C) (new line)
