NIL Technology (NILT), a nanotech startup founded in 2006 by DTU PhD students Theodor Nielsen and Brian Bilenberg, has announced a deal with Taiwan’s Radiant Opto-Electronics in a deal worth over € 250 million (over 2 billion DKK). This acquisition is part of Radiant’s strategy to diversify beyond its traditional display business into high-growth optical component markets like 3D sensing and augmented reality.
NILT, known for its meta-optical lenses, is recognized for its expertise in nano-scale optics and operates facilities in Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, and Malaysia. The company’s advanced technology is used in sectors like consumer electronics, automotive, and biomedical testing.
CEO Theodor Nielsen noted that the acquisition would help them scale up mass production and access further investments and expertise. The deal, approved by both companies’ boards, is set to close in the first quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approval.
“We have been looking for the right partner, and we have found that now.”
said CEO Theodor Nielsen about the deal
This acquisition follows Radiant’s 2023 purchase of Finnish optical firm Nanocomp, demonstrating its ambition to expand into the optical design and manufacturing market. The addition of NILT strengthens Radiant’s position in providing advanced optical solutions, allowing it to target new sectors and enhance its offerings beyond displays, focusing on technologies like 3D sensing and AR waveguide lenses.
The collaboration between the two companies is expected to accelerate the development and commercialization of advanced optical components, highlighting the potential for innovation and growth in the meta-optical sector.
